In the sleepy lil university town of Kent Ohio hides a mini pinball Mecca in the micro brewery of Madcap.

The games are owned and routed by Deez (Matt)
About 7 years ago my wife and I helped out by taking over the pinball league which allowed me to sweet talk Matt into getting more and more pins!

What started as 5 pins turned into about 20 or so depending on the month along with skee ball, big buck hunter, random arcades, a 16ft bowler, pool tables, claw machine, etc.
IMG_0042 (resized).jpegIMG_0042 (resized).jpegIMG_0043 (resized).jpegIMG_0043 (resized).jpegIMG_0044 (resized).jpegIMG_0044 (resized).jpeg

Being the little sweetheart I am, I do my best to help out with tech and maintenance when needed so Matt isn’t driving 40 minutes one way for a stuck ball or a broken sling rubber.

Matt takes pride in the game room and making sure the games are well kept and play well.

The whole purpose of this thread is to capture the shop jobs I do and other random repairs on these games at Madcap Brewery.

First game up to bat, recently dropped off in the workshop is Jurassic Park. IMG_0266 (resized).jpegIMG_0266 (resized).jpeg

In September of 2019 this game was put out and has been a workhorse clocking over 14,000 plays.

Brewery life is hard, the dust is unreal. IMG_0331 (resized).jpegIMG_0331 (resized).jpegIMG_0334 (resized).jpegIMG_0334 (resized).jpeg
Inside the game the coil stop dust and residue from the traditional black rubbers is all over every inch of the game.
IMG_0335 (resized).jpegIMG_0335 (resized).jpeg
Just from opening it up and poking around has me filthy already.

The playfield is caked in dirt. IMG_0333 (resized).jpegIMG_0333 (resized).jpeg

Over all this game was insanely easy to strip down with only minor repairs needed. The right flipper bushing in the linkage was shattered and the screw was worn in the middle.
IMG_0396 (resized).jpegIMG_0396 (resized).jpegIMG_0395 (resized).jpegIMG_0395 (resized).jpeg
The nut on one of the pops sheered off when I tried to take them apart to rebuild
IMG_0394 (resized).jpegIMG_0394 (resized).jpeg
I cleaned and polished the playfield and took the drill to it with some compound to bring the clear coat back to life
IMG_0366 (resized).jpegIMG_0366 (resized).jpegIMG_0364 (resized).jpegIMG_0364 (resized).jpeg
Little bit of a bummer with the clear coat chipping when taking the posts off
IMG_0375 (resized).jpegIMG_0375 (resized).jpeg
I added a larger washer under the post in front of the upper flipper, the original one was starting to chew up the playfield.
IMG_0377 (resized).jpegIMG_0377 (resized).jpegIMG_0378 (resized).jpegIMG_0378 (resized).jpeg
Installing the super bands instead of the traditional rubber to help keep it clean

After cleaning and polishing all the plastics, posts, ramps, wire forms, etc. I waxed the playfield and repopulated the topside
The bottom side got all new linkages and coil stops for all the flippers, new coil sleeves through out, and all stand up switches adjusted and tightened up.
Overall almost all nuts and screws underneath needed tightened from 14,000 plays worth of vibration.

Cleaned up pretty nice and plays insanely fast. I made the pops extremely sensitive and the spinner rips for about an hour after you hit it. She’s ready to be routed for another 5 years.

I think Godzilla is up next.

Looks great! What did you use with the drill to clean? And any recommendations on polishing the metal wire forms/ramps?

Complete night and day difference!

Thanks!
I love this degreaser called Formula 88. For really touch stuff I use a half and half that I drench a rag with to scrub the playfield or other parts.
I use the F88 in my ultrasonic too.
IMG_0466 (resized).jpegIMG_0466 (resized).jpeg
For light work I use SprayWay glass cleaner and Novus 2 if I need to polish.
IMG_0468 (resized).jpegIMG_0468 (resized).jpeg
After I cleaned the playfield and tried Novus 2 I still wasn’t happy so I used this set up on my drill and it polished it back to life.
IMG_0471 (resized).jpegIMG_0471 (resized).jpeg
As for the wire forms I cleaned them with the degreaser and then used Mother’s Mag. IMG_0470 (resized).jpegIMG_0470 (resized).jpeg

Onto the next victim.
I can't claim my skills are as good as Matt's, but at least I have something to shoot for.

Nice work, we enjoy Madcaps only bcuz the games are always working. Glad to see them getting a fresh cleaning, man they were dirty. That is my least fav thing to do with games when I bring them home, but when I finish them and how great they look!

Quoted from eyeamred2u:

man they were dirty.

These two are the worst offenders. Give me some credit . I work really hard at keeping them clean and repaired. I do prioritize most of my time to repair over cleaning since I personally value a well playing machine over a clean one.

They're not all even close to this filthy. These two are just really popular and hard hard to keep minty fresh and were due for some spa treatment.

We're going to be slowly working thru all the machines and rotating things in and out to keep them fresh so stay tuned for some fresh pinball here soon.

It’s amazing how a $0.06 clip can turn a $6300 game into a paperweight.

Madcap is one of my favorite places to go when I’m back in OH. The games are in great shape and the beers are fantastic.

I call them the oh shit clip because when it springs off while trying to mess with the plunger or other thing and if flies in the air you're like oooohhh shiiiitt.

They just disappear into the universe.

How many plays does that beast have on it now?

#22 3 months ago

Final resistance wouldn't exit from the initializing playfield status.

Upon testing the mechs it became clear the drop target was jammed.

Pulled the module and found a screw jammed in the release coil.

Ready to go.

Medieval madness was trapping the ball in the castle lock. Look like after so many cannon hits the plastic gave up the ghost and split. Little gorilla tape and she's back in action.
