Agreed--but make sure to shut the game off before unplugging or plugging in any connectors to the displays!
That seems a bit strange, but if it works it works. I'm thinking it may not be a voltage issue at all--but perhaps a problem with one of the connectors on the old SDU. The voltages are close enough that the MPU should boot. Might be worth replacing the 0.100 header pins on the right side of the SDU and give it another shot some time. Might be a good spare!

Ahh, missed that. Did you replace both the male and female connector pins there?
