I'm getting zero traction in the LW3 Owners thread so pounding the streets!

TLDR: For years the sound track and sound effects would randomly increase in volume, cut out completely, reset or repeat the Back in Action over and over.

Thinking it was a power board problem, I swapped it out for a fresh XPin unit.

The XPin fixed the random reset issue, but then created two new problems:
1 – The volume knob works in reverse (clockwise now turns it down)
2 – The soundtrack seems fine, but the sound effects clip so hard they sound like fireworks.

My next angle of attack was to order and installed all new ribbon cables and a new 10k potentiometer volume knob and see zero change!

Video (most noticeable towards the end):

Sounds board below. How does everything look?

Why would the new power board suddenly cause the volume pot to work in reverse? Is it possible something is wired backwards!?
Why would it suddenly scramble the bottom of the DMD? (I hardly care about this, but that's new too)
Is there a specific resistor I can test on the sound board that would regulate how much power goes to the volume pot/speakers?

Any help, thoughts, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I don’t have any good answers.
A replacement PS wouldn’t cause any of the behavior noted.

None of that makes any sense to me.

Can you put the OEM PS back in for more testing?

Alright, what in the actual F - It’s a boxing day miracle.

I swap the old board back in and it’s working rock solid so far. I haven’t played a lengthy game yet, but the volume is fixed, everything is equalized and the DMD garble is gone.

Thing is, it’s probably just the new Pot that fixed the volume… I fear the cutting out and restarting will still happen.

I will put in a good session and report back on its behavior.

In the meantime… What gives with the Xpin!?

The game works 100% flawlessly. So stoked that this is FINALLY working, but the lack of closure is going to drive me nuts!

Some things are and remain a mystery after a major connector "disturbance" - in your case repacing a board then swapping back. Possibly a shot of contact cleaner would have fixed the volume problem in the original pot. The reverse pot is just the way possibly the Xpin wired their board, that was a simple fix. I understand your frustration though, I want to understand why something was fixed more than, that it was fixed.
On a side note. I click on location sometimes on a pinsider. Christiana Lake. Pretty nice.

…and sometimes, I just call it good and move into the next problem on my list.

You could reinstall the XPin if you are unable to sleep with out knowing.

Dirty Harry opening scene, “I gots to know”.

My guess is that it will work perfectly fine. I like the phrase “major connector disturbance” used above.

Quoted from Mahoyvan:

I fear the cutting out... will still happen.

Not uncommon for a 30 year old pot to have dead spots (cut out). Cheap commodity part. Some cheaper than others. As mentioned, contact cleaner or alcohol will often 'fix' them. Douse, turn knob back and forth a few times, let dry. Your new pot should give you more than 30 years without cutouts, in home use.
