The kickback coil on my LW3 started smoking a few months ago and I haven't really had a chance to look into the issue until now.

My first question is, if I disconnect the coil am I able to continue playing it while I casually try to diagnose the problem?

Yes.

Plan on replacing the coil and coil driver on PPB, they fail a lot on DE machines for some reason. Easy job.

Perfect, so it’s just a matter of desoldering the ends and wrapping them separately in electrical tape?

I have a coil on order - Perfect.
Here’s my PBB (I think). What part is the coil driver?

The R17 looks like it needs to be replaced. Some rough areas on the board, but looks like it happened with the previous owner.

Yes, just pull the wires and tape or cap off.

I suspect Q3 but you would have to refer to the wiring schematic, the R17 resistor looks angry.

Great news - I'm learning and making progress!

1 - The R17 has no reading at all, so it's cooked.
2 - The Q3 beeps when I test the upper leg, so it must have a short.

What's the next step? There must be something wrong somewhere else to fry these two components, right?

I changed out the transistor and coil and it didn't give me any problems since.
