Quoted from mcclad:

All I will say is that it was someone who does special effects make up. I had never really met anyone in the that industry before. I had said hello, and politely asked for an autograph after I paid for one of his photos. Even though he clearly was not busy, he could not be bothered to even look up. He did not say a word.

Must have been Savini.

Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:

It all boils down to, DON'T BE A DICK! I don't have time for assholes.

And yet here you are on Pinside!

#153 5 years ago

I gotta play Savini's advocate...

Imagine doing this shit for like 35 years? Imagine how many countless hundreds of thousands of nerds this guy has had to endure!!!

I know his shitty behavior sucks, but in some small way, I can understand it. It can't help but affect a person in some way. I mean, he was in 'Nam, but I'm sure it was nothing like 4 decades on the convention circuit!!!

Then why show up to conventions if you hate it so much?

He's either there because he likes the attention or he's getting paid. So, be nice if you like the attention, or be nice because you're being paid and it's your damn JOB. Be nice.

Does anyone know if Lou Ferrigno or Arnold Schwarzenegger have dimpled? I am wondering if both are made of the same material or if one might be older or anything like that.

Brad

Not Tom Savini! He always seems very down to earth in interviews. Next you’ll be telling me Rob Botton or Greg Nicotero are jerks.

No one does a throat slash like Tom.

Everyone else that I have met, and I mean everyone, was the exact opposite. Rock or movie stars, athletes, artists, etc, you name it and there was not one person that I had a bad experience with. Except for that one time. Some of the famous people that I met were so cool and down to earth. Some of the ones that I admired the most, turned out to be some of the nicest people.

We had met because I was wearing some plate armor covered in bones, spikes and skulls

LOL. I work at a Renn fair and my job is just to take pictures with people. I also wear that stuff when I go to a convention with my son. It attracts a lot of attention. Its the way that I have met a whole bunch of celebrities. A lot of times they ask to take a picture with me. Usually they will hang out for a few moments. I don't wait in lines, and I still get to meet some cool people. If I was in street clothes I would be invisible. When I am in my warrior gear I kind of stand out in a crowd.

#160 5 years ago

I was about to say, "Are the initials T.S.?" But I was beat to it.

#161 5 years ago

Quite a few people comment that he is arrogant, stand offish and rude to fans. That he has a chip on his shoulders. I am sure that I am not the only one who was let down after meeting him.

How about a cosplay pic?

With all this bashing though, here are some ones I met over the years who were really cool and fun, John Cena, Butch Patrick, Elvira, Ken Foree, several old Creature From the Black Lagoon actors, Linnea Quigley, R.L. Stine, forget name, but kid who played Draco Malfoy. A lot more fun and nice ones, than grumpy asses.

I’ve also never had a bad experience with this kind of thing.

But I understand it.

I have played poker with Richard Roeper and not quite Amy Schumer, but her sister, lol.

I met Iron Maiden doing signings at a record shop (Sam Goody maybe?) around '82-83 when they were in touring for Number of the Beast. All nice guys, very polite, and even with a long line of fans, either Bruce Dickinson or Steve Harris (not sure which after so many years) took a moment to answer my question why Total Eclipse didn't make it onto the album. I gotta admit, his English accent was so thick that I barely understood a word he said, but what a thrill for a headbanger.

I met Dana Plato ( Different Strokes ) at a bar .. She was drunk as shit and asked me if I wanted her autograph ... I just laughed and said no ... It was pretty pathetic

Here's my list:

Very nice celebs I've interacted with in various situations:
Tony Danza, Garry Shandling, Jimmy Kimmel, N-Sync (in a hotel restaurant in Japan 3 days in a row, no less), Cassandra Peterson, William Riker, Richard Hatch (Galactica), Harry Anderson, Verne Troyer, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Seal, etc.

Disappointing:
Tobey Maguire (he's way shorter than you expect, too)

Dick:
John Larroquette

In my experience, at least, there are more nice celebs with good social graces than dickish or standoffish ones.

#171 5 years ago

I once asked Marlon Brando to please not sit on my car (It was a '85 Honda CRX) and he was over the top apologetic and super cool.

Also had a 10 minute conversation with one of my favorite actors, Alan Arkin, who couldn't have been nicer and funnier.

#172 5 years ago

I worked at a hotel in college. One day, Stone Cold Steve Austin comes in with his entourage. He hands me a credit card and checks in with a fake name. I gave him directions to his wrestling venue for the next day and he went to his room.

Doing his paperwork, I realized he left his credit card. I called his room and said, “Mr. Stone Cold, you left your credit card at the front desk.”

A little while later, he comes to grab his credit card. I said, “The name on your room doesn’t match your credit card, Mr. Stone Cold. I’ll need some ID.”

He gives me a look, then flips me the bird and says, “Fuck you kid, give me my credit card.”

We both laughed, but secretly I was relieved because he’s a gigantic dude, and I’m not.

I told Richard Widmark to "get the f_ck off the island" after I had scrubbed it down and squeegeed it dry at the Mobil service station in Westlake Village circa 1978..............he didn't say a word to me, just went and complained to the station owner, who I served with in Vietnam 10 years earlier. We had a big laugh about it while drinking beer after work that day. Good times.

I saw savini at his table at wonder-con a few years ago. It was empty. Except for his pictures for sale.

He was not friendly. I no longer give two shits about him.

That is what happens though, you lose real fans. No one even knows who savini is anymore. If your going to do something, I say do it right.

Tom exuded fan disdain. In my opinion. All this in brief moments. (When you should be at your best, creating more fans perhaps instead of bringing down everyone else.)

No filter folks sorry...

Won’t mean much to most, but I recently went and saw The Breeders play on their reunion tour. I never do this but went around back to see if any of the band were around. Kelley Deal along with the bassist was and she was so nice. I asked her to sign the record I bought and then she offered to go into the tour bus and get the rest of the band to sign it. I thought that was above and beyond nice.

How could you be certain it wasn't Kim?

#182 5 years ago

It can’t be - I’ve met and hung out with both Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero and both of them are phenomenally accommodating, especially if you get them going about makeup and movies. Tom still owes me $10’from a bar bet .. yikes, please don’t tell me it’s Rick Baker..

Besides sports figures, I haven't had all that many celebrity encounters. R. Kelly was staying at a resort where I worked and I had to stay late at work one night to keep the resort pool area open. The night before they took a door off the hinges to get in, so instead of kicking them out the General Manager decided that we should just keep it open and provide staff (me) to get them whatever they wanted. Didn't really talk much, but when he did speak it was in a very soft and high pitched voice. I actually talked with his personal trainer for most of the night. He seemed like a cool guy. Best part, I didn't get pee'd on, so overall, I considered that interaction a win. I was also on a flight from New York to Chicago with Flavor Flav. He had the big clock on and everything. He few coach and seemed to enjoy talking with people. Unlike R. Kelly, he was not soft spoken.

Let's hope Lou doesnt charge him to set it up....

I told a tattoo artist to use her sister Kim Deal as the inspiration for a tattoo but it looks more like a random pin up girl done in a traditional style, which is fine and no big. Breeders and Pixies are huge bands to me.

Been a friend of Tom Savini for 30 years. We've had talks about this stuff before. Tom can be the nicest guy in the world and also a real dick.
He HAS gotten better over the years. One time I was with him at a Chiller Convention. He had his bull whip. We were with a big crowd chatting about make up effects. He says, "Hey Ted, go over there, put the cigar in your mouth and I'll snap it in half with my whip." Of course everyone laughed. I put the cigar in my mouth and moved about 20 feet away. (yes, I was drinking a lot of tequila!) Everyone just gasped. He flicked the whip behind him and let it fly. It took the cigar right out of my mouth!
And if I find the photos, I'll post them here.

Love your tales of C-list celebs Ted, keep 'em coming!

DO you do the Con at the Javits center every year?

Quoted from Scotty78:

I sat next to Wopat on a flight a couple years ago. He's a big Packers fan, and enjoyed discussing his cameo/day on the set for Django Unchained.

I could have told him a was a huge fan when I was 7 but does he really need to hear that?

In the world of celebrity encounters, there aren't many that can say this, that's for sure....

You tend to see various celebrities in the LA area, the ones I have come across always seem pretty cool. Then again, I don't say much, if anything just hello or casual conversation. For the most part, I would have to say I don't envy them a bit. The more famous you are, the less you can go out into the world and exist as a normal person. There are so many people that converge upon them, sometimes unfairly I think. Last one I saw was Dolph Lundgren in the American Airlines lounge at LAX. Totally cool guy, was sitting by himself and was friendly with everyone who came up to talk to him.

#193 5 years ago

One thing that I never talk to a celebrity about, is what they do for a living. They hear that stuff so much. And I don't make a big deal about them when I am around them. I am fortunate that I have had the opportunity to meet some of them in a somewhat relaxed setting, like before or after a con. I have had some very cool experiences. One time my daughter who is obsessed with Star Wars, was watching The Empire Strikes Back. She commented that she liked the bad guys. I told her that one time Boba Fett was playing with her when she was a toddler, And that I had Darth Vader's home address. I also mentioned that I was friends with some of the other characters. She did not believe me, but after all they are just people, and I have had the chance to work with some of them and afterwards a friendship developed.

Some extremely cool people that stood out:
Anyone from the walking dead. Herschel, Merle, and Daryl were the best.
Anyone from Star Wars.
Richard Dean Anderson. Got to share a whole bunch of laughs with Macgyver.
Karen Allen. Marion Ravenwood is a blast to hang out with
Snoop Dog. Long story. Cool guy.
Meatlof
Van Halen, Warrant, Skid Row, Ozzy, Twisted Sister. Lots of alcohol consumed, but from what I can remember was fun.
Ralph Macchio
Ted Raimi
Michael J Fox

Paul is great and that porn bust (both of them!!!) was complete bullshit.

Saw his Pee Wee show on Broadway it was great!

Saw Paul Newman years ago at a benefit along with Michael Andretti and David Hasselhoff. (before the drunk video) When I was young also saw Barbara Eden and Forrest Tucker (F Troop). Tucker grew up in a town nearby and left to talk to friends after. The Vice President (Mike Pence) used to be my big boss when he was governor.

I was walking through the Glendale Whole Foods produce isle towards Tom Sizemore right as he dropped a banana, he paused as if I were coming to pick up his banana but I didn’t and just kept on walkin...
