Is there a tremendous difference in the play of LOTR between these two ROM versions? Please chime in if you have experience playing on both.

Thanks.

I've played 5.0 .. and it was buggier than all hell. Broken features, sword locks that get confused, and the like. It's more than just tweaks.

There's no good reason to hang onto the old roms when you can use John's services and get replacements/updates for like $20 (game rom + display rom).

i have bought LOTR 2 months ago. It also had the 4.04 rom on board. It had a lot of bugs. Not to mention the overheating flippers if you play to long.

Since my upgrade to 10.0 the bugs are gone, flippers keep strong the whole game. And there are a lot of extra sounds in the game.

i would very much recommend this upgrade!

Awesome. Thanks for the input! I have noticed a number of funny quirks which I thought were bugs but since I'm totally new to pinball ownership and have little experience I did not know for sure what the deal was. I was starting to think maybe I made a mistake in getting the LOTR. Also, about the flippers, my son keeps telling me he smells the machine as we play. We had a house fire a couple of years ago and he is really sensitive to the smell apparently.

Was it pretty easy to switch out the ROM?

so if i update to 10.0 there is no need for the flipper upgrade?

I've never changed stock coils on a 2004 run and I have no problems. Running 9

Just upgraded it tonight. So, far it definitely seems less buggy and more fun to play. This was a very worthwhile $20.

Where to buy roms, and is the 10.0 the one that will support shaker ? Sounds like a great upgrade... Have had difficulty expanding roms can you get already loaded hardware?

I ordered my ROM from www.pinballroms.com

It was very easy and fast. I bought the ROM puller but that was probably wasted money as a screwdriver was more efficient at getting the old ROM out.

I don't know about the shaker support.

I added 12V flipper coil cooling fans. Mine are always cool,& powerfull. You can get both fans at Fry's for $8.
