I was taking care of a split wire on my Gimli VUK coil, and prior to even doing the fix, the single coil test now always fires the #8 Loop Diverter coil (trough kicker, flippers, VUKs, everything).

Anyone experienced this before or have advice?

I have a LOTR LE.
Prior to the Gimli VUK failure, all coils were fine and didn't do this.

Sounds like your game is activating the ball search routine. Maybe it's not detecting a ball in the trough, or you retired the VUK repair incorrectly?

No ball search routine... because it thinks it's firing the trough kicker, but instead, the loop diverter is firing. And no ball is every put in the shooter lane.
Press the flippers? Loop diverter raises up.
Very strange.

Are you missing a diode on one of the coils?

Quoted from KingPinGames:

Are you missing a diode on one of the coils?

I'll check.

But first, an interesting update -- after going through diagnostics again, again finding nothing wrong (other than every coil single test firing the loop diverter, I started up a new game, and then spent another minute in frustration pressing the flipper buttons in vain (having the flippers barely twitch while each button press fired the loop diverter) along with the pin trying to kick out ball 1 from the trough by pulsing the loop diverter.... the pin suddenly started working. Played a full game with no issues, and put the ball in each VUK, switch, etc, and everything works.

Divine intervention?

The thing I'm worried about is the root cause is still there lurking, and going to rear its ugly head again in the future.
