I have had this problem too, leveling is important but didn't fix it for me either.
I almost placed the overhead replacement, but finally got it fixed by adjusting the pin that is supposed to block / hold / release the balls.
It's pretty easy to adjust, but needs some time to fine tune it for you to make it work.
Magnetized balls can affect this but wasn't the problem for me.
