Do you have the correct number of balls in the game? One could’ve fallen into the cabinet or gotten stuck someplace.
I think the first step is to run a switch test. Focus on the ball trough and make sure they’re all working properly. I’m guessing one or more aren’t working properly. When it does the search, it probably just thinks one is missing and compensates for a lost ball giving the illusion of a properly working game.
