I got Jays palantir and installed it along with making a light up staff for gandalf the white on shadow fax. What a couple of great things to really make the game look great. The gandalf mod is a fellow pinsiders idea, I just recreated it. I am very happy with the new additions.

Couldn't have done it without your help. Thanks

#5 10 years ago

I just added a brass wire to eliminate the ugly plastic to keep the ball on the left wire form. I saw a fellow pinsiders do something similar and figured I'd give it a try. Even though it was clear plastic that area feels much clearer.

It might have been your post somewhere that gave me the idea. If so thanks

Quoted from Nevus:

Anyone want to sell me a shadowfax Gandalf?

Check eBay, I got mine there for $20

#13 10 years ago

Thanks for showing this, this is where I saw it originally and may make another to protect the plastic as well.

#15 10 years ago

No I was not trying to sell these, I would have bought one but couldn't find the thread. It was actually real easy to make it and a friend want me to make him one now.

#16 10 years ago
Quoted from Nevus:

Thanks for the shadowfax tip.

There's one on eBay for $29 but last week there were two for under $20

#18 10 years ago

Here is a link to the led I used
http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/smd-chip-leds.html
This was the link that fellow pinsider deathhimself gave me and it worked great. This was actually his idea that I made on my own.

Quoted from ryan1234:

Nice job on this mod. It is cool to see others variations of this rail. This is what makes Pinside great.

Thanks for the idea. I think people sharing designs and ideas and tips is great. I would never have thought of any of this stuff on my own.

Here are some close ups of the staff for those who asked

Just added a balrog votive and lit it with red LEDs. I might get some orange and try those.

image-252.jpgimage-252.jpg
#23 10 years ago

I settled on a red and orange combo.
image-374.jpgimage-374.jpg

And not too bad on height I'd say

Quoted from judremy:

You should take the two posts out too and just leave the four screws. It looks better this way.

I have since the photo
Looks much claener

I just added a shade to keep the light off the ceiling and focused more on the topper

Quoted from DeathHimself:

Here is an interactive game play backglass done with simple leds purchased from eBay, wired to the Ring & Mordor's tower flashers.
» YouTube video

I like the back glass mod, was it difficult?

On a side note I am in the process of making a second gandalf on shadowfax with the light up staff if anybody is interested. I bought an extra led and gandalf and figured I'd make one for someone else. Not really sure how to price it though. I'll try and come up with a price and post a pic when it's done and ready to go.

#33 10 years ago

I suppose one Gould be made out of a small dowel( toothpick maybe) It probably would look fine. I'll check it out.

#36 10 years ago

I want to add the back box flasher behind the eye. Where did you hook to the spinner flasher?

#37 10 years ago

Well I made up another gandalf on shadowfax with the lit up staff that I am going to sell. Looking to get $110 shipped in the US. If someone wants it pm me and it's yours.
I may be getting in another gandalf soon and if so will make up another one also.

It's a nano warm white from a model train store

#45 10 years ago

There's a link earlier in the post

#47 10 years ago

I am going to have one or two more of these Gandalf's done pretty soon I'll post pictures when done.

#51 10 years ago

I may be able to get a couple more staffs, I'll post here when I know for sure.

#55 10 years ago
Quoted from DeathHimself:

I really don't wish to take/kill any business on Mike, but making a staff is fairly easy to do.

He is right, these are not that hard to make, actually he is the one who I got all the info from to make them. I just had access to multiple figures and staffs and figured I'd make them for people who didn't want to try. If anybody wants pointers on how to make them on their own, I linked the led info earlier and have pm'd several people with basic instructions on how to do it. I will hopefully be able to make up a few more full figures and also a few more staffs only.
It is definitely a great mod for the game.

#57 10 years ago

I'm working on coming up with a good alternative to the real staff as they are hard to come by.

#64 10 years ago

I just finished making my own potd mod. It doesn't flash, I wanted it to always be on. It was a pain in the ass , at least for me, but I love the look.

#65 10 years ago

I will be making up one or two more gandalfs, I'll post when finished. Also I may have a decent fake staff that I'm working on. I'll post pics when done

#67 10 years ago

Looks good now light up the staff

#69 10 years ago

It's linked earlier in the thread, 6-12v nano warm white

image-20.jpgimage-20.jpgSo this is the prototype gandalf staff mod, the proto is on the right.
It looks pretty similar.image-231.jpgimage-231.jpg

#71 10 years ago

It actually looks better in person, the whole staff head lights up a little

#74 10 years ago

Not sure how to price yet, I only made one. I'm going to try a batch and see how it goes. I probably won't have them done for a few weeks as I leave next week on vaca for two weeks. Well see how much time I have before I go. I'll post progress here.

#75 10 years ago
Quoted from judremy:

How much and will you be making a staff for Saruman?

I haven't thought about a saruman one I'm focused on these first, but maybe in the future. I suppose this could be used for either though. I might try on my game first to see how it looks.

Casting would definitely be a process. I used small wood dowels I had that are a little over a 1/16" and put the led on them then built up the tip with glue to look like the original. Then painted white. It's a process but looks pretty good when it's done. I hope to put some more time on them tonight. I'm trying to do a batch of five at once to see if it speeds up the process.

#79 10 years ago

Well I just finished gluing up three more, I broke one led. They will be painted tomorrow and ready to ship by the weekend. I was thinking $50 shipped in the us. Pm me if interested, if I have more interest I'll make more. Just to be clear these are not the original gandalf staffs, I made these with small wooden dowels and glue, and tried to replicate the shape as best I could. You can just superglue them into gandalfs hand and run the wire down through the playfield behind him. These do look great lit up In my opinion. I will post more pics when they are done. They should be ready to ship by Saturday or Monday. If I can't ship out by Monday, I'm away on vacation for two weeks and will resume making more and ship out when I get back.
I also should have three more complete gandalfs with lit staff as well. These are $115 shipped in the us.pm me if interested in these as well. I should also be getting a few more in later. I'll let everybody know.

Also to let everybody know these come with alligator clips soldered on so they can be hooked under the playfield to a GI bulb. If you want no clips I'll take $5 off. They will all come with 4' of wire which is enough to get up into the back box or pretty much anywhere under the playfield.

There's always time for mods

#85 10 years ago

Just painted the staffs so they will be tested and pics should be up tomorrow.
I finished two full gandalfs , one is spoken for, so one is still available. I will have two more in a few weeks.

#86 10 years ago

Here are the pics of a few more staffs. These are actually working out very cool. They are lit up all around. The first pic is actually from the back.image-317.jpgimage-317.jpgimage-377.jpgimage-377.jpgimage-660.jpgimage-660.jpg
Pm me If anyone is interested

#87 10 years ago

I still have two staffs left and got one more gandalf in so I can do another full gandalf on shadowfax if anybody wants one.

Quoted from wolowizard:

did you use a resister in line with the wire ?

There is a resistor built in to the nano led

#92 10 years ago

Gandalf set is spoken for, but I'm working on getting more. I have one more staff available also.

#93 10 years ago

As of now all the staffs are spoken for. I will be making another batch soon. I believe all Pm's have been answered
