Hello!

I appreciate your attention for this tech question!

My LOTR left flipper is not working. I checked and found the problem. The flippercoil fuse is blowing.

I replaced it, I closed the coin door and hit the flipper button. Then the fuse burned. Then I replaced the fuse a second time the coil fired automatically when I closed the door. After that I hit the flipper button and I notice the fuse burn. I’m not sure if this autofire happens all the time since I’m out of the 3A/250v fuses at the moment.

Can you please tell me what to replace now?
Should I replace the coil?

Thanks!

Check the resistance of that coil, it might have gone bad.

If it's firing without the button pressing a transistor could also have failed

Likely a shorted transistor on the board.

Is the coil missing the diode ?
If so, place diode and replace Q15

Not for an LOTR LE. The diode is on the board for the LE.

For example see the note at the bottom of this link:

Transistor - you need board work. : (

Thanks, I didn't know that for the Limited Edition

Did you hold it up for a while when it blew the first time? LOTR has notoriously weak transistors (Q15 and Q16) for flippers, see e.g. https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/lotr-flipper-fuse-keeps-blowing#post-1672961 and replace them with beefier ones (IRL540N, assuming it's the transistor)

There's a good article on testing coils and transistors at https://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=General#Testing_a_Transistor.2C_Silicon_Controlled_Rectifier_.28SCR.29_or_Field_Effect_Transistor_.28FET.29

I think I had something similar recently. Change the corresponding transistor on the board. Then change the diode on the coil at the same time. Then replace the fuse.

I got caught in the vicious cycle. The diode blew, which blew the transistor. Changed the transistor, but bad diode kept blowing fuse, then transistor again.
