I have a F-14 Tomcat pinball machine and the T in the top left is not working. If shows closed in the switch diagnostic but the switch itself seems to be working correctly when tested with a meter. I was thinking of replacing the switch (unless there is something else I should be checking since the switch itself doesn't seem to be closed). I can't find the replacement switch online which is part number SW-1A-162-2. The red target it is connected to has the material behind it gone - is that something I should replace? (The other targets have a bit of 'foam' behind them and this target does not). Hope that makes sense and thanks!!

I would replace the switch, and add the foam if it is missing. Try Pinball Resource?

I would remove wires from switch tape ends and check that it now reads open. If so then switch or diode has failed, if not then problem in switch matrix.

I have received a new switch from Pinball Resource (thanks Steve!) and need to replace the existing switch. I have a question and I think I know the answer but I'm going to ask it anyway. How do I solder under the playfield with all those wires? The answer, I think, is VERY carefully.

What I think I should do is to remove the wires from the existing switch. Should I desolder them and use those same ends or cut them off and start from fresh wire?

I 'm thinking I would screw the new switch in place so it has some stability, move the wires out of the way as much as possible and solder the wires in place.

I'd appreciate your opinion and wish me luck!

Personally I always cut off the end and start with clean new wire to solder.

Thanks guys, I replaced the switch (first soldering job on my machine) and it now works! Quite happy for little accomplishments!
