Marco has them.

Definetly not a faulty AMI brand U11 pia? only because the AMI brand fail a lot.
Quoted from Inkochnito:Is there a difference between the AY-3-8912 and the AY-3-8912A?
8912A does not have the "BDIR" connection at p2. The S&T sound board shows P2 as not used so in this case you should be able to use 8912 or 8912a but other applications may require 8912 with no letter suffix if P2 is wired up.
This chip is out of production and looks like it is up to $5-6ea in the gray market so Marco's price is not bad. Interesting the older dip40 versions go for 1/10th that. I guess probably because there are a bunch of clones of the dip40 version.

I thought as much.
I did a little Googeling and found a forum in which this is discussed.
They also tested the chips and they do work in both situations.
Glad to know I have a dozen in stock.
It looks like they are pulls from old boards, but if they work who cares.

Actually BDIR is at pin 23 on both BDIR is at pin 2 on the 8913 (different feature chip)
8912 lists pin 2 as "TEST1" (used for manufacturer test purposes only. Should be left disconnected)
8912A lists pin 2 as "No Connect" (suspect they just removed the TEST 1 description to avoid confusion)
Pin 2 appears to be an output for special test purposes of internal functionality.
The only info I can find is that the timing specs for writing to the chips is slightly different. So it's been assumed rightly or wrongly that the "A" version has better digital interface compatibility.
See "Myth number 3" on post# 52 here:
There is apparently no difference on the analog side so they should sound identical.
