Depending on your definition of 'value', for reliability you're likely good with an MEI/Mard AE2000 series acceptor. Anything newer from (now) Crane Inc is .. rather untested. CoinCo and others wok as well, and could be good, but the old defacto standard is MEI/Mars.

This man sells rebuilt ones that look like new. And will replace 500 count cartridge on it for a 300 so it will fit in your game.
It is 110AC, so if your game is 12 volts you need the Stern harness to plug into power supply in rear, or one of these :

I have multiple stern pins out on route. Just had a Star Wars prem on route. I use the MEI model AE 2411 or AE 2451 bill validators.
You will also need the stern power cable that runs from the back box to the Coin door.
I recently picked some up for $30-$40. I have seen them for $100 or more on eBay. These have been running flawlessly on my sterns at a local brewery. Any questions, send me a pm
Simple and relatively easy install that takes 10mins.

Quoted from Blenderhead:Thanks for all the replies, gonna go with that ebay seller... thanks LTG!!
Good.
I forgot to add. He includes a new set of stickers for it too.
I've got 5 of them so far. Great seller. Great product.

As others have said, depending on when the game was manufactured it may or may not have a Stern DBV cable. If your game does not have one, don't buy the cable! Talk to the distributor you purchased the game from and they will hook you up with one at no charge under "warranty".

I’ve bought all my stern spike pins used and unfortunately had to buy my own.
Good idea if he bought the pin nib from a distributor- definitely don’t need to buy something you could possibly get at no charge
