What are some other pins with a similar amount of open space? Gottlieb's Black Hole and Haunted House belong on this list too.

Your sign on the hobbit is covering up two toys that pop up as targets and are also used to block flipper shots on the orbits. But don’t move it up too much as it will hit the other lighted toy pop ups that block the ramps and the third flipper shot to the dwarf stand ups, targets, and left vuk and orbit. Perhaps make the sign smaller? Oh wait, it would still cover the 4 rollover targets to light the Smaug lock. Better yet, just take the sign off, it makes no sense. 
#lexy_lightspeed All the permanent physical shots are in the back or on the side. Scoops pop up during the game.

Even with the ball walker taking up the top left quarter of the playfield, there's still a lot of open area to the right and below.

No I don't own one, but there are other games from this era with similar open playfields. It was an experimental time in the early days of flipper pinball. Some worked better than others.
