Yep, the reason may be that there is simply not enough space on the node board. That was a potential reason I heard a lot from podcasters and it sounded the most logical. So the game would need an entire new node board just to separate the pop bumpers.
And the manual confirms it (if I read it right).
On the Premium, Node 9 uses all 6 available CN8 connectors.
