I've got a Alien Poker where I wanted to install one to protect what remains of the playfield. Bad news - they aren't available for the title... so I'm going to try the sheet-from-walmary DIY method that was posted here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/inexpensive-petg-sheets-for-playfield-protectors#post-4282152 and here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/batman-66-official-club-thread/page/7#post-3527141

I've got two of the protectors already (although I haven't installed the BoP protector yet). Pre-cut would be better for me but I'm off to plan B.

Quoted from zacaj:

I'm doing the same right now for my 4MBC. I ordered a sheet of 0.002" pet-g off line, trimmed it to fit, then marked and drilled the holes. Should be done soon...

@zacaj Did you drill or punch the holes? Advise in the threads was punch but I was thinking my drill press should be able to do the job - I haven't bought/borrowed the punches yet. Would like to include your experience in my formula...

Quoted from zacaj:

So far I've just been drilling everything. Hadn't considered a punch, but I also haven't finished it yet so I can't say for sure that mine works.

I don't see many mentions of the punch in those threads, do you know what the advantage is?

Punch reference is here - "you will need..." in between the two amazon links:

I'm not sure what (if any) advantage the punches introduce compared to how you are tackling the work. Your photo showing the drill with your bit is helpful - I would think that spade bit like yours would could nice holes through the material. I would have reached for the twist bits first but I won't now thanks to your pic.

A little more research turned up this old thread: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/proper-way-to-drill-a-hole-in-petg-plastics

Follow the link in the thread for special plastic cutting bits to see a potential disadvantage to drilling - chipping the material. The drill bit seller advocates for their product but the thread points out punching to avoid risks of drilling the material. My plastic showed up in the mail today so I'm suddenly motivated to start building my pattern.

Quoted from fissionch1ps:

I’m planning on doing this with a .02 petg Walmart special sheet.
Do you just lay it on and the posts hold it down, when you’re done?
Any playfield protection notes before placement?
Do you just keep waxing the protector for maintenance?

fissionch1ps - I created one and posted an evaluation of my efforts. The thread accumulated quite a bit of good advice. You can check it out here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/i-made-a-playfield-protector-self-evaulation
