I posted this in another thread, which was subsequently closed. To make sure everyone reads this I'm copying it to a new thread.

Okay, here we go. Sorry for being a party pooper here, but...

Everyone, Pinside is a pinball forum. I'm getting a bit tired reading this same "funny" stuff over and over. Some of the comments here are cringe-worthy in my opinion. I want Pinside to be a family friendly site and that includes being respectful towards the cool women who love pinball too and who also visit this site. Some of the posts in this topic (and other topics for that matter) are bothering me. The endless off-topic topic posts and negativity towards some people or groups of people in the hobby are bothering me. The endless posting of the same semi-nude pics is bothering me.

I'm asking all of you to please try and help steer Pinside towards a more family friendly pinball site. Yes, I know we have topic drain and ignore and all that and it's awesome. But that doesn't mean that anything goes.

Pinside has to be a cool place for everyone who loves pinball: men *and* women, in all parts of the world. If I get signals that some people do not feel welcome here anymore and when I'm actually getting annoyed by some of the posts here myself I think it's time to step in.

    Thanks for your cooperation.

Let's all poop rainbows and make this the happiest, most friendliest, most pc place ever conceived!

    Ugh.

In all seriousness I completely agree with Robin's opinion. Pinball from the start was intended to be a family amusement, but the way people have acted out on the forum recently is getting far too out-of-hand. We all need a reminder every now and then. Thanks.

    Was that 4th post sarcasm?

Nope just agreeing with the man. For some reason 2 people disagree that this place should be fun and family friendly. If I disagreed I would have down voted the op.

    #6 4 years ago

    I agree also! But I am crazy:/

It read as really sarcastic to me hence my disagreement

As a female who is a member of this forum, I really appreciate Robin's sentiments. I am not reading Pinside nearly as much as I used to - it's going through a period of negativity and crassness that is off-putting to say the least. I *know* there have been some awful things going on in pinball lately, but the amount of name-calling and finger-pointing has gotten completely out of hand. And honestly, I can live without the NSFW threads and posts that litter the forum.

    Thanks for stepping up Robin.

Whatever you decide, be consistent with the rules.

    #11 4 years ago

Maybe people jumping to conclusions and getting offended about things is really the problem, not the potentially offensive items themselves. Like any interaction, the involved parties all have their own interpretation of the events. People should probably only speak for themselves as they are the only one who would know their own interpretation.

Does that mean that any pinball art that may not be politically correct or may not be family friendly also has no place here now?

Yep. Consistency is the key especially as we get larger. It's a PITA for moderators but it has to be done. I'm game.

I'm just here for the pinball.

I don't feel the need to argue with people, when I realize I'm getting sucked into that I try and back myself out. Thread draining can help, it's hard to have the willpower sometimes to not keep reading something you know is gonna get you riled up.

A good debate is great, being pissy and shitty at each other doesn't really lead to anything productive, I can do without it.

I like the female form, count me as a fan. I'm not a prude, and I'm not offended by naked bodies. I'm also not here for that. You want to talk about making a Suicide Girls pin? Rad. You want to have a thread talking about rare pins like Big Dick and Zingy Bingy? Great. But I just don't need a random pair of boobs in my face all over the place in unrelated threads. I know how to find those, the internet is not lacking in naked or pleasing boobs.

Personally I'd prefer that if people want to post that stuff here it be limited to threads that were marked NSFW in the title. Then there's a safe home for it, without having to worry about if you're following the rules of context, and anyone who wants to ignore it can do so. Baby steps.

The mods here are way out of whack. I get booted for suggesting it's a bad idea to post pictures of possible minors having sex??? I hope some fairness is instituted

    Yes! Exactly!

But seriously, I'm asking for a bit more pinball and a little less off-topic posts. To echo another posters comment: yes, maybe things did indeed get a bit too much out of hand recently. Truth is, I haven't been paying too much attention when it comes to the content posted to Pinside. And to steering Pinside through the recent growth. I was too busy keeping this site running (technically, that is) and moving to a new server and making a mobile version and fixing bugs and all that.

Look, Pinside was created all the way back in 2003, to spread pinball around the world. For *everyone* who loves the silver ball. Men and women, kids and grandparents. But also across borders. We started out with a couple of 100 posters, and the vibe was really positive all around. That lasted for quite a few years with a slow growth which was pretty manageable. Well, even then we had moments like this - maybe less prominent. But if you're saying positivity is dull then you clearly weren't around back then.

Pinside has really grown in the past two-three years, and with that growth some inevitable side effects. One of them being the increased negativity in some of the main threads. But also the "mob mentality" that seems to happen more often nowadays. Stuff like this apparently happens to all online forums who go from 3,000 to 30,000 members.

Well, I'm gonna try and steer Pinside away from it. I want to ask everyone to keep our community rules in mind when posting. You agreed to them when signing up for a Pinside account.

Some of you may not like where I want to see Pinside go: A cool, friendly place to talk pinball. Well, time to start your own forum I guess. Personally, I think occasionally reminding everyone that this is a pinball site is not a bad idea.

    Quoted from Northernhuskie2:

I'd say be safe, scrub history. Everyone should be happy, even if that makes you unhappy. Do it for the children!

Of course we're not talking censoring pinball backglasses here.

I suggest 24-hour bans for anyone posting "girly" pics - That'll solve the issue immediately.

As a moderator on a different forum I think that you do not have any clue what it takes to do the job. Pinside is very well moderated. The people doing it are volunteers and spend a lot of their free time keeping this place running. Do they make bad decisions from time to time? yes. It happens. When you look at all of the posts, all of the moderation actions, and all of the choices that are made, the vast majority of them are correct and timely.

That being said, there are pins that are not family friendly. I would love to have a Sexy Girl in my collection. There are others with art in the backglass and on the playfield that is questionable. How do we deal with those if Pinside if fully "family friendly"?

Robin - Can you set aside a portion of your server to set up a mirror site with adults-only login? Maybe you could call it Pornside. Just a thought.

    1. Pinside is first and foremost a pinball site.
    2. It's also supposed to be family friendly.

    1 > 2

Looking at the history of pinball, it has almost always been on the more mature side of things. Many of the EMs had pinup girl themes that by current standards are not family friendly. It was not until the video game era that it became toys and movie themes. You need to set the line on what is acceptable and what is not. Is Sexy Girl? Are any of the Playboy themed machines? If there is a Suicide Girls machine produced, is it automatically excluded from discussion?

What is your definition of family friendly? How has this been communicated to your moderators? Are all of you on the same page?

Leaving things to the "I know it when I see it" test will cause nothing but problems.

    It's the end of Pinside.

    #30 4 years ago

I'm all for this and try to be good and positive and mature in all my posts.

But I'll agree that a lot of pins are a bit racy and don't work in a family environment. When planning out my initial pin purchase, I had to knock a few good playing pins off the list because of the way women were portrayed on the backglass or playfield. It's a slippery slope, similar to the ways men and women are portrayed in comics.

In the end it's all for fun. But if somebody posts about some strange acts going down in a public arcade, people gonna click. Where it goes from there is the problem.

    Luck all!

One of the few rules of an old defunct BitTorrent tracker was that "A Cute Avatar Is A Must"!

I like to think that helps keeps things a little more civil.

I think what Robin's asking is pretty clear. Posting a picture of a flaking backglass from an actual Pinball machine that may be somewhat racy to ask about its repair/restore/replacment = OK. It's pinball.

Posting an animated gif of some chick slapping her own ass and having it jiggle along with "Bump " is not.

    That sort of thing.

You left off the last part of the quote. Where 1 > 2. If it's actually about pinball then is sounds like it's not a problem.

There are very few threads here about Big Dick or Sexy Girl. Every 4th thread has random boob pics. Seems reasonable to not worry about the former, and fix the latter.

    #35 4 years ago

All the B S going on in almost every for sale thread is also not productive for anybody and I for one would like to see less of that as well....

Will the occasional f-bomb or other enjoyable words be allowed as long as it's not used in an attacking or hateful manner?

You raise some valid points, but please note that this is not just about pictures. And it sure isn't about pinball art. This is about asking the community to be more considerate with what they post. Not just in pictures but also when it comes to some of the written word being posted in, for example, the jpop thread.

    Quoted from epthegeek:

    Spot on.

    Quoted from PorkChopExpress:

If I wanted to strip every single f-bomb from Pinside I would have activated a word filter. In my opinion, such words have their place (like when you drain your f'in ball). And like you said, when not used to attack a person, it can quite often go unmoderated. I guess I'm just asking you to use it sensibly. Does that make sense?

    #41 4 years ago

Robin, if you want a more family friendly website then you need more moderators and they need to have zero tolerance for misbehavior

The biggest forum I use is for adult fans of Lego, a busy place with thousands of members. There is no trouble as troublemakers first warning is a ban

Political correctness is tyranny by another name.

Fake slippery slopes are always trotted out as arguments when people don't care for something. "Gay marriage will lead to people asking to marry their cat!"

This is a private club. Robin has rules about what he allows here. If you wish to be a member you need to abide by the rules. No smoking, no spitting, don't pee in the pool. Doesn't mean that the next rule is you have to wear a fez if it's not that kind of club.

Let's play a game here, Robin stop me if I'm off base.

Post your favorite pinup backglasses from the EM era! - allowed

Post your favorite pinup calendar girsl! - not allowed

Let's talk about how to make a Suicide Girls pinball! - allowed

Let's talk about what kind of soft porn you like (with photos)! - not allowed

Check out these photos of half naked girls posing on pinballs! - not allowed

Check out these photos of Big Dick, Sexy Girl, Zingy Bingy, and Playboy Pin2K! - allowed

Seems simple enough to me. If it's primarily about pinball it's fine. If the pinball part is ancillary or not included at all then leave it out. Works for me.

In a world full of self-entitled cry babies, you can't please everyone...

Let's not overreact here. If you are here to talk pinball (like 95% of our posters) then nothing will change. No one said discussing racy themed pins will be disallowed. You won't see me removing any of those games from our archive. That's ridiculous. When it comes to games like Sexy Girl I strongly feel pinball outweighs family friendliness.

Look, theres a big difference between discussing an 80's game with a "politically incorrect" theme choice (which is fine) and some of the really poor taste memes and gifs that I've seen being posted recently. I think Pinside is pretty liberal with what's allowed and what's not but some people have been crossing the line of what I find acceptable.
