My kid thinks I'm a tool because I'm just now starting to respect Metal as a musical genre. I downloaded the rest of "Master of Puppets" and listened to it front-to-back, and I'm pretty blown away. "Orion" is similar to the fusion jazz I used to listen to. Really love the whole album.

I think the reason I dismissed Metal in the 80's was that there were so many BAD metal bands:

Plus. I played guitar pretty seriously in the 80's, and we started a band called, I kid you not, "Leather Feather". I was so turned off by the music we made, that I went back to playing classical and jazz guitar.

Anyway, I think Metal can be very good. Or very bad.

The 80's bands that really turned me off to metal were Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Mental Health, etc. Really more bad rock bands, than metal.

My kid is turning me on to some pretty good stuff.

There's nothing more Metal than dying from a spider bite. I should be so lucky...I will probably break my hip falling out of the bed and die of complications.

Quoted from jarjarisgod:

A rite of passage on your journey should be the album "The Blackening" by Machine Head. It is a religious experience for any metal fan.

Thanks, I'll check that out. I've just downloaded albums by Cult of Luna and Intronaut, after reading reviews on MetalSucks. I'm partial to the industrial/psychedelic stuff.

Metallica are about to play live on AXS TV...but I'm really staying up for the pin video!

I'm digging the instruments in the music you guys are recommending - but not the vocals, sorry. I just think of their poor vocal chords and think "damn, that's gotta hurt".

Quoted from Dr_Gonzo:

Cmon now, did you listen to those volbeat songs? Paulson has a great voice.

Yes, agreed!

Not sure they qualify, but I downloaded Cult of Luna and Intronaut from eMusic. Pretty good!

I'm not sure what separates metal, rock and jazz, but I love the gray areas in between them. I've been listening to Tortoise all day:

It will take me months to check out all of the bands mentioned in this thread - but I will do it! Thanks for the many suggestions.

I'm so proud to have started this thread! I'm going to celebrate the 666th post by changing the ROM in my Metallica to play Tenacious D. Or maybe some Journey, to mess with my son.

In Atlanta, at The Masquerade. My son dragged me out here and now I'm enjoying the hell out of the music. Metal is so much better live!

My coworker turned me on to Red Fang this week. They are actually in PBR Can Crusher. I’m going to make a ROM for Metallica with their stuff when it’s back from my temp trade. Just for fun, not permanent. I’m going to have one party where every music pin uses alternate bands.

That was the golden age of music videos.

I’m thinking of switching up some of the songs in Metallica (the game that started this thread). Listened to Death Magnetic today and I hear a lot that I like. I’d cut the pretty intros out since I suck at pinball, and I’d never get to hear the awesome metal parts.

Poor misunderstood John Goblin.
