Without Motorhead, Budgie, Thin Lizzy, and Diamond Head -- there's no Metallica.

As a teenager I was in the crowd for Metallica Master of Puppets tour. Small playhouse in RI. Plywood cross cutouts up on stage.Almost called off the show because they thought the crowd was going to tear the place up. As far as metal there is Metallica’s first 3 albums then everything else falls in behind it. I eventually mellowed a bit with age and settled in with RUSH. Still love early Metallica though.

Man ur way off, Megadeths Peace Sells and Rust In Peace are equal for me personally better than early Metallica.

Laughable statement. Metallica was way more dynamic as a band than Megadeath. The only reason people pick on Metallica( me included) is because of the direction they went after Master Of Puppets. Let’s not forget the fact that METALLICA lost there bass player Cliff Burton. He died in a bus accident after completion of Master of Puppets.Cliff was the one who taught the band about arranging and actually taught them a lot about music. After he was gone seems some of that early magic died with him. They go on to become more mainstream and actually get rich. No I didn’t like that. No offense but Megadeath and others were just trying to duplicate what Metallica had already done. No band ever succeeded in making better albums than the first 3 Metallica albums.OK maybe their 2nd and 3rd albums. Way off.....lol. Dave From Megadeath was a great guitarist but terrible singer and the rest of Megadeath was just solid. Too funny.

#2466 29 days ago

He wasn't trying to convince you..he said it was his personal opinion.. to say that's laughable is a dooche statement. To come on here and act like you're teaching us who's cliff burton is a douche move. If you would of kept reading the rest of Metallica's wikipedia page you would of read that Dave Mustaine (or Dave from megadeth) was actually once Dave from Metallica. Can you name another solid" member of megadeth ?! Too funny? How?!

He said I was way off.....as in the Megadeath album he mentioned was way better than the first three Metallica albums. That’s rough man. I would have been fine with he prefers Megadeath but no I was WAY off. Funny actually living through that time what I said was kind of accepted opinion. And thanks for telling me Dave Mustaine was actually in Metallica..lol. Sorry. He was also kicked out for being an out of control drunk. And back in the 80s when we heard his replacement for the first time Kirk Hammett no one was complaining cause Kirk was better. Wikipedia page? I,m 47 I was actually there at the time and have a pretty good grasp on the metal of the time. I loved Maiden, Slayer, Pantera and the rest but still go back to at least Metallica’s 2 and 3rd albums even now. Not overdistored and tight as hell. Even though Metallica had its influence from some bands before them Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets defined metal for many years.... heck still. I,m WAY off. Sorry if I ruffled any feathers but to say I,m way off just isn’t close to the truth. Oh well maybe I should just turn in my flannel and work boots then.

#2468 29 days ago

"Not overly distorted and tight as hell" wtf does that even mean?! Are talking about Kirk's pants? You sound like a pretty experienced fan.. being 47 and all! Cheers

Back in the 80s a lot of metal bands that had less skill cranked the distortion way up so as not to hear everything they were playing. Tight as hell meaning keeping in time and not sloppy or muddy sounding. I probably shouldn’t have said laughable statement but back in the mid 80s we would have laughed. Again no offense to Hazoff or any other metal heads in here.

No offense taken, still ur way off. I'm with ya with regards to Metallica but why u leave Justice out of their early greats tells me you may be slightly confused. Peace Sells and Rust In Peace are highly regarded as Classic Metal albums right up there with R T Lightning and Puppets. Dave Mustaine is pretty much the King of Thrash guitar and as a musician I can tell u Megadeth over Metallica all day. As far as Kirk being better than Dave well that kinda ends this debate as it would be like trying to explain evolution to a creationinst, no point. Good Day Sir, I said Good Day.

Quoted from Hazoff:

Wrong.

Go listen to Justice one more time, and tell me if you don't notice a few "not great" songs on there...

As my music professor once told us,

"You are confuse!"

Very imperfect album.

First half of the album is great... and the accolades end there.

Mixed like crap.

No bass.

Second side has a few miserably slow plodding songs revealing the crap that's coming in the next album. shortest straw... harvester... sanity... are a new non-shredding style and not what many of us wanted to hear from them. In 1986 it was shred or GTFO.

Side B of Justice was the beginning of the end. Not the end of the beginning.

Quoted from Hazoff:

Rust In Peace

Right.

Best guitars on a metal album ever, and there's no close 2nd.

When it's over you pretty much need not 1 but 2 towels to feel fresh again. It's a beast.

Quoted from Hazoff:

Megadeth over Metallica all day

As a career. True.

Megadeth had a lull period with the pop albums and recovered VERY well. Metallica, kinda recovered really late in the game with magneto, but "kinda", I think they morphed too far to ever go back to full time shredding...

Comparing first-3 albums against each other, no. Metallica wins. Not by a long-shot, but it's a clear winner.

Not confused. Justice was post Cliff Burton and you could tell right away they missed his music knowledge and bass playing. One and another one or two songs were great but it wasn’t like RTL and MOP where every track was great. Dave Mustaine was a great technical player but no one complained about him being replaced at the time. How is that possible if he was soooo much better than Kirk. It’s not. Sorry I,m not the confused one on this. There are two Metallica IMO. With Cliff and without. If you can look at them that way then you may understand what I,m trying to tell you. Early Metallica defined metal because it was so much better and dynamic than everything else out there. This was the feeling in the 80s and looking back I feel the same.

#2476 28 days ago

I agree the mix on Justice, shit sandwich. But I liked all the songs pretty much. Well we will never fully agree and thats ok, now while a not a big Slipknot fan I'm really liking their new song with the almost Death Metal breakdown at the 3min mark.

Good track. Belongs on Side A, so that Side B is pure slow-plodding sandwich.

Well...

Metallica is led by Hetfield and Burton, imo...

Hetfield is a ridiculously tight rhythm player. Name a better one. I can't. See MoP for Exhibits A through H -- "tightest" metal album of all time back when you laid it all down on tape. No computer shit to fix it all. If you want to learn how to play thrash metal, go learn Kill 'em All. Don't open the door until you have that figured out.

Burton was (apparently by his absence), the soul of the band.

Hammett to me, just did his job, his runs/lines never blew my mind apart -- Mustaine, however is one level above, as proven with Rust in Peace. Which is relentless guitar shredding excellence from start to finish.

I don't know I probably shouldn't be commenting as I don't even listen to very much Old Metal anymore, its mostly Death Metal for me. And after that it all sounds kinda weak.

#2481 28 days ago

Happy to have the discussion with you guys and glad to see those passionate about metal. I will say one more thing about Metallica. They became a hard band to like. Let me explain. I liked Justice but could hear a drop in quality after Cliff was gone. OK I said makes sense. They are just adjusting to losing Cliff and the next album should be back to top quality. What comes next shocks the metal heads. Metallica waters down their sound to the point that now it is more like hard rock. The Black album was a great ROCK album IMO but we wanted metal. A lot of us into real metal walked away from Metallica at this point. Then they cut their hair trying to improve their mainstream mission. Yuck. Then then sue Napster and Lars in well just kind of a tool. So as far as full metal career I can see picking a band who stayed true to their metal roots throughout and didn’t sell out metal like I believe Metallica did. So yes they are hard to like overall at times and I think that can affect people saying they were the best at true metal but put RTL and MOP as stand alone albums and I have yet to hear a more complete product.

I agree 100% and Megadeth for me also went down this path, I don't listen to anything after Rust, I know theres some good songs here and there but like Metallica a few great albums then Shit. Iron Maiden and so many others in the Metal world fall into this category, except well the best in my opinion and one that shouldn't be part of the big four as they destroy them all, thats right SLAYER.

Agree with most of this. Burton was the best overall musician in the band especially in arranging and music theory. He taught them a lot of what they knew of music at the time. Dave Mustaine could really shred I just think the music Kirk wrote was more dynamic and better at mood setting and the like. And who are we kidding here Kirk rips it up on RTL and MOP.

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Napster was just the icing on the cake for me. I left them long before the Napster thing mostly because they went from metal to hard rock. I just wanted more of their original formula musically but I can’t blame them for going mainstream. Just wasn’t for me.

#2490 25 days ago
Quoted from Dee-Bow:

Mustaine can definitely shred but I like the guitar parts Kirk writes better. More dynamic and mood setting plus Kirk sheds pretty fucking good. To me Megadeath was always a great guitarist in a so so overall band. I just think there is more overall talent in early Metallica. As a whole they are a lot better to me than Megadeath. But this is mostly just my taste.

(Lights on -- pulling this speeding car over)

1994 was the year of last "great" Slayer album.

YES. They've kept their sound (they never went pop-rock like Megadeth and Metallica), I can hand them that, but it doesn't mean they have any fresh ideas after 6 solid albums... None of my favorite 70s/80s rock/metal bands ever have made it to 7... Even Sabbath and Zep faltered on 7 and 8... Van Halen too... 6 is the magic number.

Diabolus in 1998 was flat and uninspired, and I honestly can't recall one song since then... I've played each new album 10-20 spins, never to return.

All bands have an expiration date...

What r u saying that nobody makes a great 7th album or only great bands make it to 7 studio albums? either way thats not true.

#2499 18 days ago
Quoted from Hazoff:

nobody makes a great 7th album

In my book yes. The greats typically make it to six Max of perfect, filler free, same style albums. Some fewer (like Metallica, 3)

Iron maiden had 'quest for fire' on a great album and I'm willing to turn the cheek on one song. It's easier to do when the next album is equally great, Powerslave.

Mof

Six is a magic number.

Whatever, man. I love every song put out by Maiden. Even X Factor and Virtual 11 songs are incredible in my book. You just probably never gave it a chance because everyone else disapproves of them. Same reason people hate Gottlieb and Data East games without even playing them first.
