What is your floor surface? Is it polished concrete? I noticed what looks like a pop bumper and some flippers painted on the floor too. I'd love to see a few more pictures of that.

How do people do the overhead color changing LED lighting like in JFH's room?
Is it just a strip(s) that are plugged in up there and controlled by remote ?

    Nevus, is that ceramic tile?

bobnatlanta- Man, that's a lot of Peachtree Races. I'd love to run that some time, but making it down there for a road race is tough. Are you a competitive runner, or just do the Peachtree because it's local to you?

Mopar- Is that the side of a Block-A-Shot in your first picture? I have one of those in my basement and it gets played like crazy when people come over for games. I've never seen one in anyone else's gameroom. Mine doesn't have the black base that it looks like yours has.

    Quoted from ramegoom:

I wanted to use the 9 ft. ceilings at their maximum potential. Painted the ceilings with flat black - 36 gallons! - and it maintains a game room atmosphere IMO. If I dropped the ceiling, I'd realize an 8 ft. maximum height, and less around the duct work. Tall ceilings always give you the spacious feel.

How is the noise upstairs when the games are being played? Without anything insulating the noise, my unfinished basement is really easily heard....one of the main reasons I'd consider a finished ceiling as opposed to the painted look.

Moved the games around in the loft. How does it look? Total Nuclear Annihilation will be joining the collection in May!

That's a lot of race medals!

    Someday I’ll finish this basement...
Anyone have any idea why I have a concrete wall jutting out into this one space (see pictures).

    Quoted from twinmice:

    Possibly structural?

Yeah, I’m really not sure. It just has that little 4x4 above it. I thought maybe to add stability to an otherwise short run of outside wall.

    #12599 5 years ago

There’s a two story interior wall almost directly above it, running parallel to the joists. I say “almost” because it’s off by a couple inches.

For those who have finished their own rooms- I’m about to drywall. Is ceiling insulation + drywalling the ceiling enough to dampen the sound coming up to the next floor?

I keep reading about double layer drywall with Green a Glue in between, but I think it’s overkill. I’m not looking for silent, just quieting it a little.

    #15945 3 years ago

Thanks guys. Yeah, I was planning on 5/8” drywall with fiberglass insulation. Will the insulation even help? Again, not looking for silent, just dampen it down to a mild background noise.

    Quoted from ReadyPO:

Nice job on the subpanel wiring.

Thanks! Who knew years of rewriting pins and arcade would come in handy. I went with four 20A breakers, wired so I never have more than 5-6 pins on a single circuit. Never ran electric before, so this was a learning experience.

    1 week later
    #16133 3 years ago
    Quoted from ramegoom:

You might consider running all 12 gage wire and putting 20 amp circuits throughout instead. Then you're covered for worst-case load scenarios. I have six pins on a single 20 amp circuit because I have converted all of them to LEDs - never had any issues.

This is exactly what I've done. The difference in cost from 14 gauge to 12 gauge wire and 15a to 20a breakers is tiny.
I'll add that I don't think you have enough lighting for that sized space, but that's personal preference. Only 2 pot lights in a 24' long room is going to be pretty dim.

I finally get to post a picture of my (almost) finished room! Here’s the pinball side, and the Chexx/arcade side. I haven’t brought in the arcade games yet...there will be 6 of those along the long wall.
Proud to say I finished this room myself.

    Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:

Every house in the USA has the outlets mounted at about this height.

Mine are slightly higher than normal. They’re at 16” (~40cm) to bottom. I put them at that height because that’s where they are in the rest of the house. There’s no code on height for outlets in the US, but 12” (30cm) to bottom is pretty normal. Not sure why my house has them higher. It was built in 2005.

    #16617 3 years ago
    Quoted from twoplays25c:

I also asked multiple outlets be installed about 2 ft. down from ceilings for any neon signs, etc. (smartest request of all in hindsight.)
The electricians were more baffled why I wanted a separate 20-amp line in every wall for the low outlets. "You're obviously not a pinhead."

I installed one outlet just below the ceiling that you can see in my pinball wall.
I did the same thing with 4 separate 20a lines. I should never have more than 6 pins on a breaker no matter how I arrange my room. I don’t see any reason not to do that if building a room as it really wasn’t much more work.

Moved the arcade games in tonight, which means I’m coming at you with more pictures. 420sqft packed with a nice variety.
The only thing left on this side of the basement is to install the doors. (4’ entrance, looking at French doors). Then it’s on to the other side of the basement. Might need some decorating on these bare walls.

In other threads people have put meters on them. Generally, they found machines pull around 1.6-2.4 amps, but one person had a spike of around 4a. I’ll be curious to see what you get when you measure it.

    Quoted from ExSquid:

Question about CGC , why are Pacman/Galaga machines always readily available but they stop production of Monster Bash and Medieval Madness? If I'm mistaken let me know but I cant find any distributor that has been selling either one for a long time.

I would imagine it’s many times easier to build and assemble an arcade game. Considerably less parts- build the cab, screw in a wire harness, plop in a monitor, PCB, and control panel, and you’re good to go. Playfield production and assembly is a completely different beast. That’s just my guess.

Added some doors to my game room (not painted yet, so still have protective plastic on windows).
My son suggested the Christmas lights.

Love that Block A Shot. If it ever needs a new home....

I have one, too. Simple game but always gets a ton of plays when guests are over. Mine needs a new score real circuit board….it currently jumps scores once in a while.

Don’t want to derail the thread, but looking for a little advice. I’m adding a fireplace wall with an electric fireplace and a recessed TV above.

What lines should I definitely run to this tv?
Is Coax cable even a thing these days?

I don’t know what’s necessary now that everything’s Bluetooth and wireless.

SilverUnicorn Did you get those arcade cabinets up out of the water? Hate to see them get waterlogged, especially Baby Pac since it’s particle board (iirc).

I used a little bank of lights specifically for the row of pinball machines. Not track lighting since they don’t move…more like tiny spot lights. I use a dimmable switch and they work great.
