Den of pin early (resized).jpgDen of pin early (resized).jpg
Early shot of my future "Den of Pin" before I had completely sealed off the third garage. On the table are magnets I would use to create a bug screen so I could go open door when the weather is nice.
Den of pin create screen (resized).jpgDen of pin create screen (resized).jpg
    Sewing the screen.
Den of pin screen (resized).jpgDen of pin screen (resized).jpg
    Screen in place.
    Faux brick (resized).jpgFaux brick (resized).jpg
Closing up one of two large openings with framework and insulation.
Faux brick complete (resized).jpgFaux brick complete (resized).jpg
Simple Faux brick from Lowe's that I would later paint black and add an A/C window unit.
Early with freezer door in place (resized).jpgEarly with freezer door in place (resized).jpg
In the back you will notice a black curtain. This is actually a heavy duty commercial freezer door. Does a great job of keeping that room cold even on the hottest days in TN.
den of pin airbrush (resized).jpgden of pin airbrush (resized).jpg
Room painted black and dark blue. Fiber Starfield installed but not yet trimmed. Starting the airbrushing. I also added a 5.1 blutooth surround system with all of the speakers mounted in the ceiling and a couple of powered subs hiding under the pinball machines. I can wake the neighbors when the door is open!
den of pin installing fiber starfield (resized).jpgden of pin installing fiber starfield (resized).jpg
Wide view of starfield pre trimmed and airbrushed "aurora" theme.
    Den of pin2 (resized).jpgDen of pin2 (resized).jpg
Expanding the game lineup. I now have 14 machines (some still in the stages of restoration) and I rotate them out to keep the lineup fresh.
Den of Pin wide (resized).jpgDen of Pin wide (resized).jpg
Built an 8ft bar out of two old playfields and playfield glass. Installed GI lighting and LED sequencers for the inserts. Also wall mounted 3 TVs on left wall. One for sports, etc and the other two are in the portrait mode and are switchable to any of the playfields from overhead mounted HD cameras. Can either display 4 on 1 or a single playfield. Great for tournaments.
    Den of pin1 (resized).jpgDen of pin1 (resized).jpg
Perfect weather and big door open for PinGolf competition this past Thursday night. I have been having Thursday nights for the last 3 years, way before I had the room done when I only had a single Virtual Pinball cabinet. It has only grown from there with as many as 18 people showing up on some Thursdays. My wife doesn't mind it so much since people don't have to trudge through the house when we play, and there is a fridge for beer on the other side of the garage and a bathroom just inside the back door. It's a great setup. Good times!

    Quoted from Spitfiren8:

Fantastic! Another example of why this is my fav thread on pinside.
    Great space...

Thanks! It took me a couple of years to do all that, but it was a labor of love. To see my friends enjoy themselves on Thursdays makes it all worth it.

    #7538 7 years ago
    Quoted from littlecammi:

Tomorrow is Thursday, so where is Arlington, Tennesse on the map and what time should we all come over?

    Hahaha! But of course!

Arlington is in West Tennessee, about 25 miles outside of MEM. And pinballers are always welcome.

Bring $5 to enter the PinGolf and whatever beverages you enjoy. And be advised the Den of Pin sometimes smells like Bob Marley's apartment. Not that I would know anything about that.

More info and pics please. That thing looks great!

I'll try to get some video of the table, take the glass off, show how I wired it up etc. and share it with the forum. I'll also give some details about what components I used and how I built it. I'll post a link to the new thread here when I have it done.

The wife wanted a new house built, with a pool. All I asked for was a pool house and a shop. On the far right in the 3rd bay of the garage it is walled off and will be insulated/HVAC with sliding door access. That will be my shop.
On the far left, connected by breezeway/security checkpoint-- the "pool house" which upon it's completion will have a .5 bath, hvac, fridge, icemaker and the rest will be pinball machines and a bar to sit at. It will also have a 10x30 covered poolside porch with a fire pit. The "work in progress name" for the pool house is "Dave's Ballshack."

A few closeups of my ballshack-

    Quoted from xsvtoys:

This is great. In my imagination world where fantasy lives, I always think that the ideal place for a game room is across the yard on the other side of the pool. It would be combined with a shaded lounge area for the pool and a bathroom. It sounds like this is exactly what you are doing. Hope to see more pics of the progress.

The world is so jaded now, I'm not sure if sarcasm or not.

    #16715 3 years ago
    Quoted from xsvtoys:

Heck no, totally serious. If I get the chance to do it my ideal way, this is how I would do it. I even have the idea sketched out. And more than likely, the pool area AND the game room would lean toward a Tiki theme. In fact, I think one of the setups in this thread is something very close to this, I'll have to go back and see if I can find it.

While the plan wasn't exactly that complicated (mostly an empty room) here is my original sketch with the architectural drawings overlaid. I drew stuff to scale using the simple grid tool in photoshop then passed it off to the builder. I expected there to be changes in where i put the breezeway and maybe even the bathroom and storage, but any changes they made were minimal.

    Quoted from hooch333:

Your bio says you have 62 machines, and your drawing shows space for 22. Do you route the rest, or do you plan on expanding the room again? I ask because I have built 2 exterior buildings, have a gameroom inside my house, and I am still out of space!! It is never enough space.

I have about 25 on route already. The rest are in storage. About 20 of the ones I have in storage haven't been restored yet. The plan (which is always subject to change) is to fill the room with some of my favorites then I will most likely reduce the number of routed locations I'm taking care of to get the routed number down to less than twenty. If I could get down to one location that would be really awesome. Then I'll continue to restore and change my home lineup/routed lineup as I see fit. I'm also thinking of selling a few to maybe buy some newer pins. A lot of mine are older but I do try to take my time and make them nice when I restore them. Maybe I can find some buyers.

Here is the last resto I did before we moved into the apartment (no shop currently).

EDIT: I didn't have time to finish Capt Fantastic because the house had sold. Still have to do the coin door and score reels. Didn't want anyone to think I'm slacking!

    Quoted from Timfenske11:

Why so few circuits on a new build? Most "new" games are rated at 8 amps. I have no problem running 3 on a 20 amp circuit but I would worry about 6 if they were all on at once. Just my two cents as an electrician since its easy and very inexpensive to do now rather than later
On another note looks like it will be an amazing house.

8 amps? I’ve never heard a per machine estimate that high. But I’ll talk to the electrician when that time comes. May add more circuits.

    #16730 3 years ago
    Quoted from Timfenske11:

Here are my thoughts for what's it's worth.
I turned on all 4 machines I have and posted the stickers above. I opened the panel and at the source read 3.7 amps on a fluke meter.
I have no way to test all the machines or even one at this point because I have no one else to play them while I run the meter. I will do this when I have a chance out of curiosity.
I use an 1800w max sure proctector/power Conditioner on the circuit and have had all games running at once without tripping the breaker (20 amp) .
Something to consider is also the type of breakers/wiring you have in your house. Newer breakers are alot more sensitive and likely to trip than older ones. Some never tip at all! Espically if your house is built on a newer code with arc fault and gfi breakers (which I'm not using to supply power to my games) .
Just some things to consider. In a new build I would rather have too many circuits then not enough. Being an electrician I over engineer and over think all electrical in my house/shop.

I appreciate the info. I texted the superintendent and told him I wanted to meet with the electrician (which should be coming relatively soon as they are moving along at a pretty good clip). I've also got to get the guy who will be running structured/data cable as well. I think I'll add 3 more 20amp circuits just to be safe.

As of yesterday. Think they'll be finished with the decking today.

    Quoted from Nokoro:

In my experience, electricians just look at the game, see 8 amps and say that’s what you need. I have four pins on one breaker and haven’t had a problem, but they rarely get played at the same time. Most everything I’ve read on pinside is consistent with the advice here — 3-4 pins per breaker.

As currently designed I would be at 6 per 20amp circuit. I'm going to add 3 circuits to get it to 4 and drive on. Thanks ALL for the info. Keeping me straight over here...

I spent some time in Vancouver going to some advanced classes for work. Nicest peoples ever so Canadians are always welcome here! However, I hope ATT charges you the same fees Rogers charged me PER TEXT! My cell bill was outrageous. Thieving bastards!

EDIT: I'll expect an apology for it...

What is the square footage of your new home overall, and the ballshack and ballshop separately?

Ballshack is 35x30. 10x30 of that is covered porch.
House is right at 3K and the shop is 200.

Quick update on the Ballshack. They have started on the roofing and cornice work and they removed all of the temporary support studs from the interior. Here's a pano of the inside.

Coming along .Finishing the other side now the pressure is on ,GnR will be here by April and will be on the hunt for a DP soon after that .

Was looking at your pictures and noticed the carpet. In the room I'm having built it will just be concrete when I take ownership and I've been trying hard to decide on the floor type. I want to go carpet for the noise cancelling and to easier on the feet. I've been looking at very similar carpet as this for its durability. Did you have this carpet put down? If so, do you know what kind of pad is under it? I'm looking for a pad that is thick enough to be easy on the feet but also "non-spongy" enough to make moving pins on in using my escalara somewhat easy and also dense enough to not get permanent indentations from the pinball feet.

Not my game room per se, but started moving into the basement pinball workshop, 12'x16' with a 12'x3' workbench along one wall. It will never be this clean and uncluttered again. Still shelves to go on the wall, more lighting, etc. Should have room to work comfortably with 3 machines in there, and is adjacent to the new game room still being worked on.[quoted image]

What is this sorcery? Not the organizer/storage cases, I'm talking about the thing on wheels they are in. Did you build that yourself? Love it!

Small update on "Dave's Ballshack" (pool house full of pinball eventually).
Brick was finished a couple days ago, as well as most of the insulation. The insulation folks broke the brick loose on the threshold of the shack because it wasn't dry yet so they'll have to come back and reset it. Also the pocket door frame for the bathroom has been installed (did a pocket door because I'm trying to minimize how much internal loss of space with doors that swing out into the space). Also pictured is the breezeway/entrance between the house and the shack leading into the back yard which will include a gate with magnetic lock.
We have high hopes we'll be moving in around the early part of May.

Shackwarming party coming up I hope! I'd make the trip for that!

Stay tuned! Want to wait until we have the pool installed and I have a chance to get it all together then invite the B'ham folks up for a Saturday pinball tournament and pool lounging session. Make a day of it.

I got a pic of the Ballshack in its current state from within the house being built behind ours. I assume when this house is eventually occupied and they look out the back window this will be the vision they have. At least until the fence goes up.

I think we are still on pace to take occupancy in May.

Just to add to the discussion about illuminating old playfields. I used a cheap LED sequencer called "LED Magician" and cut an LED strip into small sections and soldered the wires to the small copper pads that are populated all along the strip. I think the sequencer has 10 or so different patterns and will accommodate around 15 different channels. I've done 4 playfields so far and will add more after I get my room set up later. The sequencer was around $25 as I recall.

Here's some video of one for the wall:

And also some video of a few playfields I put in a bar:

    Quoted from Thor-NL:

Every time i read Ballshack, i chuckle ..... a dirty mind is a joy forever

I think it is one of my craftier ideas as far as naming my space (our last house had the "Den of Pin" which is fine, but not as good as Ballshack). My wife HATES it when we go to check the progress of the house and I say "Let's go out back and check out my ballshack." She's not a fan.

    #17293 3 years ago

The Ballshack has made it up to the “cold gray void” stage. Drywall is up. I guess they’ll finish mud before they add the pocket door to the “world’s smallest shitter” (I ain’t giving up much room for pinball machines, one small closet and one small .5 bath)93F43E05-93F6-40C6-8F27-97135C64EBD0 (resized).jpeg93F43E05-93F6-40C6-8F27-97135C64EBD0 (resized).jpeg5A658F88-7036-4BCD-B2EA-AFF3BDC73650 (resized).jpeg5A658F88-7036-4BCD-B2EA-AFF3BDC73650 (resized).jpeg

I’m not seeing too many outlets in there.

The picture is misleading. There are several on the back wall you can’t see and for some reason a few of the boxes are cut but still covered. That one room has a total of ten 20amp circuits.

    #17299 3 years ago
    Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:

Don't make me come over there and clean that place up!

Haha. Yeah I'm hoping they give the place a good sweep before we take ownership. You should see the back yard. It's a minefield of bricks, drywall and lumber with nails sticking out of it in every direction.

    Update on Dave's Ballshack:
The builder installed the wrong glass in the doors to The Shack (wanted single piece glass instead of the one with the smaller panes), but that has now been replaced.
The pins in storage are ready to be set free.
Our move-in is in 3 weeks and 3 days (but who's counting)

The house is finally finished and we closed on it Thursday. I’ve started moving stuff into the house itself and I’m using “The Ballshack” for storage at the moment. I’m going to pick up a MM tomorrow and it will end up being the first pin installed. After I get all the stuff my wife wants done completed, I’ll get to hit storage and fill it up from there.

Had a chance to enjoy my first beverage on the front porch of the shack last night. After almost a year long journey to get there it was a big exhale.

Since it’s a pool house and people will go in there wet, I had them install commercial grade vinyl plank for the floors. Pleased with how it all turned out.
