Haha! Curses! Now I want one.

    GET IN LINE! hehehe

BTW here is my slot, the only machine that resides outside of my gameroom area because it has such great mid-century aesthetics.

heh your idea of a grail slot and mine are way different
I already have my favourite slot machine (1948 Mills High top) but these are the only other slot machines I'd seriously consider:

I'd take any of them but the Bally Bingo Continental would fit in best with my other Bally EM slots.

sadly it has no extra bingo-like features, but it's aesthetics are great.
It's just like a normal slot machine except with a lot more lamps and great look.

    Since we are showing slots......
I just got this Bally Slant Top slot as my wife really wanted one for our arcade. Fun to play but very temperamental. In fact its down again as I post this.

How much would one expect to pay for a mechanical slot that works, in fairly decent condition?

Head over to the NewLifeGames slot forum. Kind of an Underground hobby but you can find most anything from around $400 for mechanical to anything. I prefer the newer Bally or Williams slots as we can change out the games to keep it fresh.

We really like the Williams Wonka game currently. Also have all three LOTR games which have some great bonus games. Fun value of the newer slots is you simply swap out the software USB or card and you have a new game. The only old style reel game we still have is the Barcrest Pinball as it’s rare and fits the arcade theme. Others just get old in short order.

Awesome! I buy a game a year for my dad’s birthday. Sounds like this will be the next purchase.

    Quoted from undrdog:

a classic 1940s Mills high top like mine can be had for around $1k USD. They are gorgeous, built like tanks, and were very popular at the time so the prices stays relatively low.
The mechanical slot market is way cheaper than it was 10, 20 years ago.

They are mechanical wonders and the innards should delight anyone that has stared in amazement at mechanical ingenuity.
If you're just a casual like me and want a slot for your game room, stick with a big name like Mills as the parts are well made, easily sourced, and lots of people know how to fix them. Lots of older slots from smaller companies used lesser metals and so are more prone to problems, and are harder to fix.
So if you want something that looks great, will be very reliable, not cost too much, and is on the easier end to repair, go for a Mills High Top.

If you want to spend a bit more for something similar, you get a Mills "Bonus" machine with the added BONUS feature.

I was going to get this Mills for $250, but for long involved complicated reasons the deal never went through. It still might be possible one day, I am not sure what the status of this one is. It wasn't working, when pulling the handle down nothing happened, but there is a really good Youtube video where a guy tears one of these all the way down step by step, so I thought I might be able to get it working. Not sure if the original style pull handle can be acquired.

Stupid Question: What is the point of a home slot machine? The fun of slot machines at a casino revolves around the chance to win money. Are you guys actually putting quarters in these and running them like a home casino where you are the house?

    #18423 2 years ago

Different strokes for different folks my man...

Some people appreciate the art, the mechanicals, the design, some even PLAY them!

I get asked the same thing about my pins by non-pinheads all the time: "what's the point if you're not playing against anyone else?". See the answer above.

    Well I gotta start somewhere.
Having a new house built now, only the footers are in so far.

    pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

But I figure about 25 machines (shown by the gray boxes) could fit in the rec room, more in the bedroom and unfinished basement of course!
Bonus feature is a cargo lift that goes to the garage on the first floor.
Will post pics in a year when it's all settled in.

Currently owns six pins and plans space for 25+ in the new house. That's thinking ahead.

I have one, a 1937 Mills Bursting Cherry. It's fun to give the handle a couple pulls in the morning. I feel like if I hit it's going to be a good day. Plus as also mentioned it's a historical piece of mechanical ingenuity.

If you like the feeling of hearing the knocker crack on a replay pinball at home, you will probably also like a slot machine.

I'm not into modern stuff but believe the draw for later slots is interactive gameplay and theme. Plus maybe your friends like to gamble at your house. The house always wins but fun to try just like a casino. I'm sure in most places though that isn't legal.

I get that they are cool to look at and the mechanics are very neat. I guess that should be enough of a reason. I guess I just see pinball as a game of skill and I am always trying to improve that skill, and slot machines do not have the skill aspect.

    Yeah, true that...

Ask any slot head though, and they'll tell you there's "skill" involved in playing a one armed bandit, haha.

For.me it's the love of the aesthetics, both design and mechanical. For many people who visit it's a physical thing they'll never otherwise be able to experience, and it's also an important part of coin-op history telling.
Also a great way to teach finite mathematics!

Just for fun. The older demographic loves them. I gotta admit I play them quite a bit. Sometime nice to just zone out and hit the button or pull the handle.

Even without the pay out, there is something about them that is addicting.

Before my grandma passed, she would come over and we would have a "slot tourny". Everyone would pay $5 (for fun) and get 5 mins on the machine. Whoever won the most money in those 5 mins got to keep all the "tourny fee money". Eventually, she told me $5 wasn't enough. So she upped to $20 per tourny. I miss her so much.

    Remodel in progress,
Having a new floor installed in our basement (gameroom).
Previously the floor was covered with industrial carpeting,
that was stained and smelly with cat piss and probably 20+ yrs of old.
The floor had an underlayment of a rubber coating (moisture barrier)
not unlike Flex Seal. But in a few places the rubber sealant had deteriorated,
and there were some areas where years of water pressure had formed tiny bubbled areas,
in the rubber with moisture underneath. We repaired those areas with an epoxy resin sealant.
Then floating another layer of thin set cement to help level out some uneven areas.
Then placing down a vapor moisture barrier (2mil plastic sheeting).
Then placing the flooring on top of all that. It is a product called Marmoleum.
Kind of like old school linoleum, but in tile squares that Clic & Lock into place.
Here are a few photos of the before and in progress.
I will post more once completed in a few days.

You guys now have me contemplating adding a “newer” style slot to my space. Not really for me, but for a way to get my wife to come hang out with me when I’m flippin. After all, she IS Filipina! And pins really ain’t her thang.

This is the only Slot I have. I think it's 1938 and this is a little similar..
Whoever's in gets 5 nickels and throws in a buck. Whoever has the most nickels
after 5 pulls each, gets the pot. If no one wins any nickels or there's a tie, everyone's
still in and throws in another buck doubling up the pot..

For us it's having a variety of games to play for us and our guests. We are all here because of pinball but having a mix of games makes it easier for everyone to find something they would like. Shuffleboard, skill stop machines, pachinko, claw machines, arcade games, drivers, slots, bowlers, darts, Xbox/Nintendo/Playstation, Golden Tee, redemption machines......the list goes on and on.
Add a bar, wine room, TV/movie theater. Incorporate your other hobbies and passions. its all good as long as you like it and your friends and family have fun.

Not going to lie. I have seen home arcades that looked like more fun, but this one looks the most professional by far. If you were single and brought a member of the opposite sex home for the first time and they saw this, they would not run away screaming like they would from some of the other arcades. Very well done.

Thanks and yes although I could have jammed my complete 25 game collection in here, I was careful to keep it less focused on pinballs and more “balanced” shall we say. I absolutely wanted a 10’ wet bar in there because I have more friends and family into cocktails than they are into pinball. Not to say that the pins aren’t used, but the libations served are usually a good intro I’ve found.

Looks great! I'm in the process of building out my entire downstairs in a similar fashion, can I ask how deep is the bar back area? I'm toying with less than 40" (ADA) of space for mine and wondering how others have done it. Do you hire a bartender for parties? I'm also themeing out my bathroom ala Madonna Inn and trying to decide if I wanna put a waterfall urinal in there, how'd you do your bathroom? Do most of you guys add a urinal?
    Thanks.
