One thing I suggest doing for those who unfortunately have to refinish their basements is to employ a technique I've applied to my last two basements: I prefer to utilize metal studs where I can, but one of the downsides to them is baseboard attachment. You can't brad nail to metal studs. So I ripped 1/2" OSB in 4" strips, and screwed it to the studs at floor level. This gives me something to nail to. The other benefit that I take advantage of, even on wood walls, is that if I ever get water (up to 4 inches anyway) in my basement, the carpet comes out, the trim and osb comes off, and the drywall can stay. Drywall can't wick up water if it isn't touching the surface.

I know some of you had not inches, but feet of water. But most water issues in basements are localized and shallow. This might buy you enough margin to lessen the pain in a more typical event.

You can also see in the photo the method I've come up with to keep the metal studs from flexing where there are outlets. Metal is cheaper, straighter, and you can cut half a dozen studs at once. If you are starting from scratch, I'd definitely consider going that direction.

Gotta take some better photos, this phone sucks.
My games are spread out half in one garage, a few in the house, then another garage.
    Its a mess I know.
    Anyway heres a couple pics.
The lights on pic is the unboxing night of Alice Cooper getting ready to put it next to Blackout.

Started a remodel on a 12x24 foot section of my basement for my new game room. Was removing the batt insulation one of the previous owners used to insulate the sill plate and found this.

    Sadly, it was empty.

Nice selection of games. Some of my favorites I wish I didn’t sell.

    #18258 2 years ago

Thanks, haven't sold one yet. That's ten years now.
The Haunted House and High Speed are games I'm Babysitting, the others are in the house.

I wouldn’t doubt it. I’ve seen it happen before. Always fun seeing the old girls again. Kinda like an ex girlfriend

    #18261 2 years ago

Yep, I bought one game from a big dealer.
One from a rando in his garage.
    One from Captains auction.
    3 NIB.
    2 from TPF.
The rest were all from my crazy group of new Socal Pinhead friends, or their friends.

It's amazing, to get a call out of nowhere, " hey! I'm selling my game, you still want it? "
Its happened 3 or 4 times now.
    Crazy hobby.

Was wondering if I’d see any pics of your room here. As I’m sure with most game rooms, pics don’t do justice; way more impressive in person.

Did that with my Ducati 1098 a couple weeks ago. My best mate has been saying i'm not allowed to sell it without asking him first.

Couple weeks ago i though 'fuck i'm not registering it again, too scary'. So i texted him.

He's now selling his shit as quick as he can to get his dream bike.

I’ve always used furring strips for attaching drywall to metal studs, but that’s a great idea to use OSB for the last couple inches - it’s covered by the baseboard anyway. Doesn’t the OSB swell when wet though?

I'm sure it would, if left for a long period of time. But it doesn't matter: it is meant to be sacrificial to save the drywall.

    Gotcha. Great idea for sure

    #18269 2 years ago

The drywall I tore off already was dry as can be. It had a big dent in it, so it had to go. Can't really see it in the pic behind the Cyclone. It's all the mold resistant stuff. Biggest problem is the combination of the paint and the paper layer on the drywall. Paint bubbled and made a mess of the paper layer of the drywall. I figure it will be easier to just replace the drywall rather than try to get the existing ones looking good enough. The insulation is all the spray foam, so that's all good. Would have been a relatively quick fix if the paint held up.

Electrician here. Depending on your local jurisdiction, this may be against your local building/electrical codes. Where I am (which is not necessarily where you are) you need to use a wrap-around steel box with steel studs, as they have built-in stabilization. If the box is more than one gang in width, it should be attached with an appropriate(and approved) span brace. Bracing steel with wood in order to accommodate a box that isn't approved for steel stud would net me an instant fail from the inspector.

These plastic boxes do the same thing, should be available just about anywhere, and are made in the USA: https://www.legrand.us/wiring-devices/electrical-boxes/wall-boxes/steel-stud-bracket-box/p/p122b

Those flex so bad on light Guage studs that they are useless. I learned that the hard way on my last basement, as unplugging a device would allow the outlet to rotate substantially. Codes are the absolute minimum. I do every project with my children in mind. I don't do shortcuts or compromise safety in any area. It took a bit longer to do it this way, and there is far less of a possibility of any type of movement. I didn't get dinged for it.

Your observations pertaining to Canadian codes are undoubtedly accurate. My method could indeed be troublesome in some parts of the world. I take no offense, and appreciate you speaking up. Electrical sources are to my knowledge the most common reason for house fires. It isn't something to take lightly.

    #18272 2 years ago

For sure. One of the things that I've done to brace studs and shift boxes is actually take a cut-off steel stud, notch out bits of it so it can be bent, and bend it into a bracket. Top and bottom get fastened into the regular stud and the junction box can be fastened to the new bracket.

Water is gone, all wet items thrown out. Demo complete, airing out now. All games appear to be functional to that's good news at least.

But what a mess, and we only had 8" of water.

You could consider some sort of planking or barn wood lumber or other contrasting material to fill in that bottom piece.

How did you get electric to the Pool Table, I've been wanting to light mine up for years.

Yeah, I didn't have coverage for water backup. I do now. $100 a year for 35K in coverage. As long as we have a sump pump and it is working, if there's an issue it's covered. Better than nothing.

Wish I would have installed a outlet under the table for a uv kit. Neon pool seems like such a cool concept to me. When I build my own home a outlet under the table will be a must have.

Had an event at my place yesterday so needed to do a bit of a cleanup of the game room. While I was at it, I took some new pics as it's been quite while since I posted my pics here. The room is nothing fancy, just some fun games...

I'm a couple months away from closing on my new home. Here's the current state of my 16x20 gameroom. The room will 4 can lights and two diffused led lights in the center portion of the room. The plan is to only use the can lights when working on games. I also made sure to get 3 dedicated 20amp circuits for thr games.

Got a couple of color dmd's back when they first came out and they were VERY expensive. Put them in AFM and MM. I know that they are more economical now and might revisit that idea again.

I just finished my summer project of LED's all of my games. Takes a fair bit of time to replace 10,000 bulbs. But a labor of love...

They're still pricey up here. 30 color dmds would be 15k cdn roughly.

I like to clean under the inserts when changing bulbs and definitely adds a hour or two a game

    Quoted from JimWilks:

Had an event at my place yesterday so needed to do a bit of a cleanup of the game room. While I was at it, I took some new pics as it's been quite while since I posted my pics here. The room is nothing fancy, just some fun games...
