Just picked up a lethal weapon 3 the other day. I was playing it that night after I got it home and noticed the drop targets in the top middle weren't coming back up after being nocked down. I took a closer look and noticed the coil for them wasn't working. I figured it was just a bad coil and replaced it. Still nothing. Checked the connector real quick and it looks fine. Checked the back box and no fuses blown. I went back and checked the old coil for continuity (like I should have to start with) and it tested fine. The other set of drop targets work fine. Any ideas here? I feel like its a simple solution and I'm just not seeing it...

Is that coil kicking in the test menu?If it is it’s most likely the switches or wiring to those switches check for continuity

So it doesn't kick in the test menu either. I checked the drop target switches and they do register when hit. I noticed that there's continuity between the coils for the two different target banks. If their is continuity between the two and the other works fine, wouldn't that indicate it's not a continuity issue?

See if there is voltage at the coil. If there is then the voltage is not going back to ground and completing the circuit. If no voltage work your way backwards.

I'll give it a check...btw small world, I used to be in ballwin all the time as a kid..even worked at the McDonald's there for a few years.

Ok test the transistor that’s runs that coil. For a coil not to fire in game or in test menus it’s pointing to a bad transistor on the board

After finding that the coil does not fire in test mode but before blaming the driver transistor, the ground path to the coil should be verified. Take a test lead with one end clipped to ground and momentarily touch the metal tab of the driver transistor. If the coil fires then the ground path is good and the driver transistor is likely bad. If the coil doesn't fire, then either the ground path is faulty OR there isn't voltage to the coil.

Since I'm not sure which transistor it is, can I just go thru and test all of them on the board and use process if elimination, or would that risk damaging something? I'm assuming you mean on the driver board. I've got a rottendog mpu/driver board if that matters...

Yes the transistor would be on the driver board.Location of that transistor would be in the manual

Following is an excerpt from the manual that defines the drop target coil circuit. The driver transistor is Q41 that should map the same on the rottendog driver board.

Progress..I shorted the circuit...that seems to have solved the issue (dont quite understand why, but hey, ill take the win). A new issue has arisen though, while shorting the transistor, I touched a couple others as well..now the red large dome light in the back is always on and blinding you when you look at the back corner..suggestions?

That flasher is stuck on and will get so hot it will melt the plastics. You mostly likely shorted out that transistor for that flasher.Power off meter set to continuity place black probe on ground strap(the one in the backbox will do.)Touch that transistor tab with red probe. If it beeps then that transistor is shorted. If there is a diode on that flasher socket that will need to be tested also

Well crap...I knew it was too good to be true...the coil for the center drop targets is smoked....literally. odd thing is it still works.
