Happ LED (resized).jpg
#1 5 years ago

I've been having trouble with this for a while now.

On some early WPC games (like T2), I am able to install LEDs in the start buttons with no trouble, and the buttons function normally.

In some later games (shadow, IJ, RFM), if I try to install an LED bulb, it jams the button.

And yet, with AFM, I can install LEDs in the start and launch buttons.

Am I missing something? What's the trick? Why can I install LEDs inside some buttons, but not others?

The buttons in those games are the Happ control Illuminated buttons. You need to use these LEDs in them (or the newer style twist and lock in version of the switches):

And you might want to replace your old buttons with the newer ones. The newer style ones don't have the tendency for the switch / lamp holders to pop out of the bezel assembly. They are a direct replacement for the old style ones. You can use your old legend plates in the new buttons.

It's damn annoying - I just use a dremel to cut off the chaff that surrounds the bulb and keeps it from fitting. The bulb stays intact, and you can still hit the buttons plenty. This works in all newer B/W games at least

I've taken the #555 ghostbuster lamps, pulled the dome off and ground down the collar around the outside.

You need button LEDs. These do not have a wide base since there is not a dome on them that needs to be mounted. https://cointaker.com/products?keywords=button+led

Or he could just use the ones made for the Happ buttons. Happ LED (resized).jpgHapp LED (resized).jpg

The Cointaker ones are too short and would probably be difficult to insert or pull out.

Hm...those look like older LED, rather than SMD bulbs.

On the other hand, Happ has a minimum order of $100, last time I checked.

Is the light throw that different behind the start / launch button?

No idea. The old style LEDs just fade out after a while. The SMDs don't.

you can take a traditional Comet SMD and trim off the rim around the bulb to remove the lip. It's the lip that is causing it to jam. Use a diagnal cutter.

They are made for the Happ buttons. The throw quite evenly on the back side of the legend plate.

I disagree. They have been selling them for more than 4 years and all of a sudden would be too short of a fit to light up buttons evenly? They fit fine and why would I want to take out a LED once installed?

These from Cointaker shine just fine on all the different types of the buttons on the Slugfest control panel. https://cointaker.com/products?keywords=button+led
