I'm restoring a Gottlieb Devil's Dare and am thinking of going LED. NO color-bombing, just cleaner, brighter light. I know early Ballys have issues with LEDs. What about these Sys80 games? Can I use them in both controlled and GI lights? Which bulb type would be best?

There will be no flicker in Gottlieb System 80 games since they don't use a light matrix to run the lighting. Because of this, you can use whatever LED floats your boat. You can even make your own LED lighting if that's what you want to do.

I'm cautious about GI though, it's too easy to go overboard and make the game too bright. Aaron (Jean-Luc-Picard on Pinside) showed me some cool Retro bulbs that looked real nice for this purpose.

Cointaker retro all the way! I am going to do my system 80 with them the next time I shop. Post pics when you are done!

OK, so I've been ordering LEDs from Comet, Art is a great guy. I put LEDs in the inserts no problem, but the 1SMD bulbs do not fit in the GI. The diameter of the plastic rim of the bulb is greater than the diameter of the playfield hole, and the socket is deep enough that I can't get the bulbs in.

My understanding is that this is a pretty standard bulb and that I would face the same issues using this type of bulb from any of the vendors. So, what bulbs can I use for Sys80 GI that will fit the socket holes?

Ugh. I hate it when it won't fit in the hole!!
