Quoted from Hayfarmer:

Just installed pinwoofer kit, and I added backbox speakers to it. Amazing sound quality and took 15 minutes to install.

Below is a link to what Hayfarmer put in his LE; this system includes everything you'll need for any of the trim packages:

Quoted from Psw757:

Can you get this without the Pyle speakers? These Kenwoods are good if properly amplified.

Thanks for the question Psw757 !

With Pyle backbox speakers:
https://pinwoofer.com/pinwoofer-gt-8in-5-25in-spike-super-kit/

Without backbox speakers:
https://pinwoofer.com/pinwoofer-gt-8in-spike-2-super-kit/

Recent feedback to us on the Kenwoods is not positive (guys are saying they are a bit "Tinny"). So, we did a sound check comparing the Kenwood to the Pyle last week (albeit on Iron Maiden) and I let the first ball drain. If you have have no comparison between the Kenwood and Pyle you'll be happy with the Kenwood. However, the Pyle sound better IMO; they have stronger / better defined midrange, I believe owing to the larger magnet and voice coil.

Thank you!

Quoted from Hayfarmer:

The pyles do so much more with an amp.

You know this lesson well Hayfarmer ! There's a low water mark for the speakers and after that, better speakers won't help much because you're stuck with the de-rated stock amplifier. The discussion being about speakers is limited here. Speakers are important to a point (in a pinball machine), but the key to good pinball audio is the PinWoofer amp and power solution.

More about the stock amp on the CPU node. The amplifier uses a TI audio chip that's commonly used in consumer electronics. It's essentially the same amplifier you will find in a plat panel TV. There is limited power bussing and almost no bypass cap. Meaning, there is very little DC power delivery to the amplifier and almost nothing to prop-up the amplifier voltage during bass hits and other power intese passages. The amp was not designed to drive the speakers in a meaningful way that presents an immersive audio experience. It was designed to meet needs of reproducing the track in an economical way.

A consequence of this design approach is that there is limited dynamic range and much of the track does not reach its full potential. Not that the point of our system is to get loud (which you can do, no problem), but rather to liberate the track through power and headroom. The result is a much cleaner audio reproduction and you will absolutely hear more in the track. You'll hear new things and the audio will be much cleaner.

Thanks!

Quoted from Greaseman:

I have a set of the Pyles arriving early next week

Great write-up Greaseman - love the detail!

Can't wait to learn about your take on the Pyle's in conjunction with the PinWoofer system, compared to the Kenwood. Having done a head to head evaluation in the shop last week, we are strongly advising guys to go with the Plye speakers over the KFC-1366S.

We have no doubt the Pyle sounds better owing to a larger magnet (2x the size), stiffer suspension and larger voice coil which all contribute to a better speaker in the Pyle. The Pyle mid-ranges are "fuller" and the tweeters are cleaner. (This was not what we expected since the Kenwood cost us twice as much as the Pyle.)

Below is the recommended system for all trims:

Good times!

Quoted from Mapalot:

Definitely need the mounting rings on the Pro because it comes with smaller stock speakers. 4" maybe?

Agree - at checkout you select your trim package.

- For Pro / Premium the rings supplied converts the two stud 4in mount to accept the 5.25in backbox speakers.
- If you have the LE (or have upgraded to the 5.25in speaker panels with the 5.25in studs), you select that option and get the spacer ring shown below.

Huge shout out to Hayfarmer for the supplied LZ LE photos below!

You can always PM me or add a note to your order and we'll ensure you get the correct mounts for your needs. We make it easy and are here to help!

Quoted from Mapalot:

Up and running with Pinwoofer and could not be happier with the sound. Huge upgrade from the stock speakers, which were not bad, but....It's like the difference from Imax and standard sound at the movies.
Huge shout out to Dan from Pinwoofer who reached out proactively before I started my install to make sure I was all set, and see if I had any questions. Between the videos and instructions on line I felt like I had already done the install before I even started. Everything was very as described and very straight forward! Great product and company! Thanks to all who recommended them!

Awesome to hear Mapalot - have fun!

Quoted from NickBuffaloPinball:

Just installed Pinwoofer, and honestly, I'm underwhelmed. Actually, maybe just frustrated. I looked at the recommended settings and am finding that the callouts are getting buried in the music. I just want the callouts to be balanced like it is stock, but can't seem to figure that out.
Any recommendations?

From my email:

"
From what you are describing it may be that the music and voice attenuation settings in the menu need to be adjusted. If the voice is too positive, or the music too negative, in terms of attenuation, you can loose call-out strength.

Did you try to default or adjust the music and voice attenuation settings in the menu?

Also, we recommend setting EVERYTHING in the audio menu to default including the EQ. This way you can form a good baseline.

We'll get it sounding good, but please look into the above and report back. I'm more than happy to help and we can setup a time to review tomorrow if the above does not start to get you to where you need to be.

Let me know how it goes.
"

My guidance is to work on the attenuation settings.

Quoted from Bellagio:

Thanks, glad to be here!
Is that the Pinwoofer amp thing? I have a set of Flipper Fidelity speakers from another machine that I may put into it.
For the spinners, is 3-in-1 silicon oil ok or do you use something else?

Hey Bellagio ! PinWoofer is much more than an external sub since it replaces the wimpy stock audio hardware:

You'll love the resuts!

Quoted from Bellagio:

I was under the impression that the speakers were just limited by the amp on the MPU and that's where having an external amp like Pinwoofer would come into play. I saw that the package they sell uses Pyle speakers. The music is awesome in this game so I want the best sounding system I can get.

Hey Bellagio ! Feel free to give me a call at the shop and we can talk about your audio goals for Zep. You won't look back. Thanks, Dan 208-855-0346

Quoted from shlt_thunder:

How would you all compare pinwoofers vs. the LE speakers? Worth the upgrade still?

Hey shlt_thunder - yes, Greaseman also did a side by side comparison between the KFC-1366S (factory LE supplied) speakers and our Pyle PL53BL speakers awhile back and I completely agree with his findings:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/led-zeppelin-le-thread/page/55#post-6158857

The Kenwood's are spendy, but have a smaller voice coil and magnet which results in a thin mid-range response. With Kenwood, you are paying for the name. I'd take the Pyle over that speaker any day of the week.

We'll supply you with the Pyle speakers and 5.25in LE mounting plates so that the backbox speakers are turnkey. The rest of the PinWoofer system is turnkey also. Our stuff will make your Led Zeppelin sound epic:

https://pinwoofer.com/pinwoofer-spike-super-kit/

Give a shout any time if you want to talk pinball audio - it's what I do!

Thanks,

Dan

Thanks for your response Dan. I’m definitely interested and will be strongly considering the switch next month after taxes are paid. Got the LE early this month so I’m still in the period of just enjoying the stock game.

All the better - just give a shout when you are ready. We'll be here. Enjoy Zepp in the meantime.

Anyone can call the shop. We're here to help out.

Quoted from NickBuffaloPinball:

For those of you with a Pinwoofer kit, and that also hooked up an external subwoofer, how did you do it? How did you hook up the external subwoofer with the Pinwoofer kit installed?

Hey NickBuffaloPinball !

The only external stuff we plan to offer is in support of the PinWoofer Amp and we currently have a solution at the link below:

https://pinwoofer.com/pinwoofer-line-trimmer/

You've talked about PinWoofer in the stream quite a bit so I'll send you a unit + cables to play with.

This "Line Trimmer" gadget is for the GT Amplifier which has a studio / pro level out (+4dBu) so there's tons of drive for your sub and you can control the volume at the coin door location. This applies to all platforms (Spike, JJP, etc.).

+For the KO Amplifier on Spike-2 you can use the consumer line out (-10dBV) from the provided Line Out Board, but I would not recommend the Line Trimmer for this combination because you'll likely end up max-ing out the control to achieve adequate drive, so there's no point.

++I've been meaning to comment on JJP having seen some recent discussion to split the motherboard headphone audio to drive both the Factory Amp Card AND an external. A couple of problems; the track levels are highly attenuated to keep things clean and there are also some impedance matching issues when trying to split. As a consequence, there's not enough drive to supply both the Factory Amp Card AND a split to an external device. (Disclaimer - "generally speaking".)

We'll likely offer a solution to + and ++ that provides a pro level output in the future.

Good times!

Quoted from Drussksu:

Yep and machines it’s outlasted are Jurassic park, black knight sword of rage and ninja turtles. I was waiting to see if I liked it before I invested in pinwoofer. I think I’ll go ahead with it. It’s a safe bet I’ll keep it.

Hey Drussksu ! You'll love the outcome and join tons of guys who now have epic audio!
