I don't believe that I have ever had a socket that could not be repaired. I do the following to all my sockets on the playfield:

    1. Clean with dremel brush
    2. Solder barrel to base
    3. Remove wire from tab and solder it to the "tit"

If it is still flakey, I give the barrel a light squeeze.

    Never fails.

    Quoted from bonzo71:

Agreed, but I'd argue this is faster and less work. Also, the price is very low. I can see how some might consider this a hack.

It probably depends on how you go about it. I do them all at once when the playfield is out. I have it on the rotisserie and dremel all the sockets for about 5 minutes total. Then I give a quick wire wheel to clean the tit and the base, maybe another 5 minutes. I use a 45 (I think) watt soldering iron to tin each tip and connect the barrel to the base. This might be 30 minutes? Then move the wire for another 10 minutes so, in about an hour, I have done all the sockets. I don't like the find and fix method, since so many are usually flaky, I find it faster to just do them all and have no flickers.
