I'm wondering where you guys would start with this...

Williams Hurricane. Recently tidied up, new pinled CPU board (battery damage was unrecoverable from), LEDs not anti-ghosting.

Plays brilliantly. However...

When in single lamp test, a few LEDs stay on, always, dimly..

I've taken a picture of the lamp matrix and highlighted the offenders to see if I could spot a pattern.

I've tested diodes of each. Seem good.
I've tested transistors for rows and columns for a short.
I haven't put new software on yet, but it is created and needs burning.

Something's giving these some juice but I'm wondering where to start.

There is a second lamp issue, that when the entire playfield is meant to be dark in game, rows 1, 2, 6 & 7 all seem to remain dimly lit.

It would be amazing to get a suggested first step.

All understood. Thanks for coming back to me.

So it's just the game is providing voltage to those lamps and that's just the way it is?

Okey doke.

Quoted from Nokoro:

Yes, but it doesn’t have to be. Get yourself some non-ghosting bulbs. Your game will thank you.

sorting it now. my machine might thank me, my bank balance will be less impressed

Looking at LED OCD too, just for fun

I'll see what the updated ROM does too

But its interesting to learn that its not a short, its just that the game has juice at those lamps and thats that...

Quoted from ForceFlow:

There are typically 3 fixes.
1) Non-ghosting LED bulbs
2) The WPC non-ghosting game ROM patch (wpclp)
3) The LED OCD board, which adds a lot more than just a fix for ghosting.
Generally, my go-to approach is the rom patch since it doesn't cost anything (if you have the appropriate EPROM and an EPROM burner).

I've gone with burning the ROM for Hurricane for the time being. Friend burning it now, it took a little to work out wpclt.

So we will see how custom ROM works for this game.

Non ghosting for this game would be 150 GBP from Pinball.center in Germany.

I will report back.

Update on this. Think two separate issues actually. 1fixed, 1 not.

New software applied and it fixes one of the two issues I have been seeing:

Issue 1: FIXED - In Single lamp test, in 90% of cases there was a bulb dimly lit somewhere, when testing a specific bulb. It was always the lamp in the column before the one on test, same row. The new software fixes this. Makes sense to me as it is a timing issue. LED is more sensitive than incandescent, software doesn't turn the voltage off quick enough, so as it flashes one, it leaks to another.

Issue 2: NOT FIXED - When the Hurricane wheel is spinning in the head for a Mystery...The playfield is meant to be entirely dark. It isn't. Rows 1 and 2 and 6 and 7 are all dimly lit. So I suspect thats not a software timing issue, but something else..

Suspcious as its all same rows dimly lit?? 1,2,6,7Suspcious as its all same rows dimly lit?? 1,2,6,7

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to fix this. Does it matter if lamps are dimly lit. Not really, but....ya know..
