Is this just for the empty globe or is one of you two doing the bracket / goo etc? Either way I frickin love this idea.

Quoted from vid1900:Anyone have any interest in some custom 4 foot lava lamps?
A guy at my Halloween party was admiring my lava lamps and he said he works in a shop that makes custom laboratory borosilicate glassware.
He says that the glass would be much clearer, without the wavy sides and tiny bubble inclusions
He gustimates that a run of 100 lamps would bring the price to around $200-300 a glass.
He also says he'd change the top, so it would take a standard locking lab stopper
A 4 footer!? Oh hell yes!
I need to start building my collection. All I have so far is a grande.

Id be in if its possible to source a base and top from somewhere
I still have the base from my broken Humongo, so it should be pretty easy to reproduce those.
Sheet metal rolled through a slip roll to make the cones and it's just spot welded together.
250w reflector bulb in a socket and a dimmer knob at the bottom of the base
Nosepiece might be slightly different than the original, because of new seal design, but not a worry
Quoted from undrdog:I’m interested in buying a working, finished product but would not be in for just the glass.
There is probably too much liability in making and selling a finished product.
And at least if you assemble it yourself, you know your liquid will be crystal clear.
Would you be willing to offer a kit that we can “put together” ourselves, with our choice of liquid and wax? Less liability for you for shipping / damages…

I was going to use the old school formula with Carbon tetrachloride & kerosene,
We'd have to do the parifin propyene-glycol to even think of shipping
Have to think about it more
Do you have a link on the exact "old school" formula to recreate for the liquid and wax? Or the new one for that matter...
Quoted from vid1900:old school formula with Carbon tetrachloride & kerosene
Holy crap, I never realized what was in the old ones. I remember that our high school chemistry class used carbon tet as a cleaning agent, but you had to get it directly from the teacher to use it.

I have screen grabs of the original and new formula from an Angelfire website that was made by a former LL employee
Quoted from undrdog:What size lamp are you anticipating needing? What will you use for the coil inside?
Lamp is 250w incandescent floodlight, in a ceramic base
Coil is just 2 stainless steel compression springs

Willing to PM / email / drop box me?
I'll have to go through my old hard drives and post them here.
The guy was old 2 decades ago, so I'm sure he's not around to complain about it being posted now
Someone has taken over for Magma Tower and selling lava lamp filler. Unfortunately really expensive but could work for this if vid doesnt spill the beans
https://lavalabcreations.com/collections/blended-lava-wax-chemicals
I see the "vintage master fluid" for sale there
Is that actually old fluid that has been filtered, or did they just follow the known, toxic formula before the 2000s ?

Lava labs is definitely earning, because you can get a gallon of Propylene Glycol from TSC or amazon for $35
Could some one make the recipe post a key post?
I’d be interested if someone is going to make the base.

No idea

I don't think a recipe with ratios etc was ever posted, was it?
I don't think we have enough interest to get the run of monster globes made.
I posted in several other forums as well, and very little response.

You’ve let me down…….. lol if you decide to do it, I’d be in for 2.

Yeah, me too.
It seems like everyone is hunkering down for a recession that is never going to happen.
I sent pics and all the dimensions of the base and cap to a fab shop in Vietnam just to have them fab the metalwork; and they they quoted me back the entire thing...powdercoated base, cap, ceramic socket, dimmer switch, usa plug, boxed, for $8 usd FOB Hai Phong (quantity 1000). I did not even ask for all the electrical and they just figured it out on their own.
Too bad they do not do Borosilicate glass.....

Yeah that would be costly. Do you think that making a lamp out of an enormous florence flask would allow the flow to be consistent?
It looks like the crystal meth business has made some of these somewhat affordable.

The kids have already done it.

Right, But i am talking about bigger than that. I have a few grandes, and an excaliber already. I want something polarizing in size like a colossus.

The colossus had 1/4" thick sides, because it had to be durable for home use, holding 10 gallons of toxic stew.
So that would be a ~40L laboratory glassware
Maybe try a 10 gal water jug first, before you buy an expensive flask and make sure

I’d absolutely be in for one.
The Facebook LL groups are filled with people willing to pay thousands for gigantics.
Power bill be damned, I’d run that sucker near constantly.
Quoted from gliebig:After being on for several hours, mine breaks into a bunch of little bubbles. Is that normal?[quoted image]
Not uncommon for a new lava lamp. Keep using it, let it cycle some more, and see if it gets any better. If worried about overheating try taking the top cap off when it reaches that state and see if it settles down.
