I got some new bulbs in a pack of 6 made by Haraq. Type R39, E17, 25 watt. They seem to work fine and last a lot longer than the original bulbs that were supplied with the lamp. I still think I would like a dimmer, described on this thread. The Haraq bulb is on the left in the photo, original 40 watt bulb on the right in the attached photo. The 40 watt bulbs did not last more than 24 hours in my lamp.

Three really nice looking ones!

Those look really bad ass. The clear looks so much cleaner and clearer than most. Did you do something special to get that look ?

#256 2 years ago

Lamp on the left in green/red has a 40 watt bulb with no dimmer. Red lamp on the right has a 25 watt Haraq bulb and is on a dimmer. Virtually no difference in operation that I can detect other than the fact that the 25 watt bulb has lasted more than a week and the 40 watt bulb has to be turned off after a few hours, or it will burn out. The green lamp with the 40 watt bulb is starting to show small pieces in the mix, where the 25 watt bulb on a dimmer keeps the wax mostly intact.

I was experimenting with Propylene Glycol to see if I could get the lava stringier like my old Humungo

Bought one of the $11.99 lava lamps (lites?) from Home Depot nearly two years ago. After near 24-7 operation and five replacement 25watt bulbs the wax has separated and looks burnt. Thinking about replacing it with the 27” model and being a bit more responsible with its use. Does anyone have a diameter measurement for it? Can’t find that detail anywhere?

The Grande is about 7" at the thickest point, and holds about 1.7 gallons of liquid

Thank you, Grande ordered!

It will be fun to see how many cloudy ones you get before you finally get one acceptably clear.

Some guys have returned so many on the lava lamp forum, that Amazon quits letting them exchange them - refund only

#263 2 years ago

That's the good thing about buying them at Menards, you can open them and make sure they are not milky

#264 2 years ago

I've purchased around eight or so standard lava lamps from Amazon and not one was cloudy. Is this something specific to the grande?

Maybe.

It just looks like someone puked in them.

Both the pink or blue water looks like chunder in most of the Grande from the last couple of batches.

My friend is trying to attract more traffic to his mall arcade, and I told him to put a grande on the floor by the front window. It’ll pull kids and/or their parents close enough to notice that the place has 10 pins.

Kids will probably come in just to shake it.

Wallgreens had those Colossus lamps in their stores.

At 100 lbs, there was no chance of kids shaking them.

It would be fun to rig a Grande to totally blow its top when shaken

∆ never saw that before.... how real is it in person?

#278 2 years ago

It's dated 2016 so it may have been lost in the backroom for a long time.

It looks very good in person. The color changes are also very smooth. It was about $30 bucks so it was overpriced for what it is, however, I have never seen one before and it will pacify me while my real lava lamps heat up.

Reminds me of those plasma ones I've always been looking at

Shopping out Aerosmith with Beach Fossils, bloody knuckles and wine. I love the lava lamp startup phase more than anything.

Meijer has the cheap ones now.
Got these this morning.
Looked pretty unimpressive out of the box, but warmed up and are looking great.

Anybody make their own refill wax / fluid? Had some mixed success with the magma tower gookits and have thought about doing some experiments.

On the plasma lamps is there any way to make them slow down at all or are they pretty much zapping at a million miles an hour all the time?

Man I wished Mathmos sold in the US

#298 2 years ago

If you're the kind of dude ready to spend 3k+ on a lava lamp there's not much stopping you from using ship2me and a transformer.

#299 2 years ago

Just a quick search , these things [lava lamps] are kind of hard to find .
where do you guys usually purchase from ?

Menards has them, and in the past, has them for $7.99 on Black Friday.

Amazon has them (but you can't see if they are cloudy until you get them). After you return 2 to Amazon, they wont replace them any longer, and will only refund you.

Spencer (the weird store at the mall) has them, and some designs are "spencer exclusive"

Always check inside the box. If it's at all cloudy - DON'T BUY
