You guys in the UK are lucky, you can buy from Mathmos. I ordered a 27” lamp from lavalamp.com, got my fingers crossed that that one will work well.
[quoted image][quoted image]

You can also get them over here .
I brought this mathmos " rocket " lava lamp around 20 years ago , I haven't turned it on in around 19 years .
Reading this thread made me pull it out and fire it up .

Hey speaking of Lava lamps before my job forced me to move I had one of the original Colossus lava lamps yep the one that was around 4 feet tall sold it because I did not want to chance the 300 mile trip the glass was not very thick it used a 200 watt heating lamp

The 27" er's are no light weights!

If you’re planning to buy one of these and have it shipped to you, I’d recommend waiting until Nov/Dec when it’s cold in the trucks. I just got one and it’s cloudy; I’m waiting to see if it will fix itself after a week or so of daily use. 27” is totally badass though, I love it other than the cloudiness.

Thanks for the info. I am going to do the same thing.

Mathmos has the purple liquid/orange lava in stock now. They were sold out for a long time. I wanted one of those in bronze. Check out that combo.

#55 3 years ago

Yea that was the other thing my colossus weighed in at over 80 pounds.

#56 3 years ago

The Colossus can do a lot of damage if it overheats and explodes (not my pic):

That was one of the colors I wanted! I just need to order them soon. Got busy today and never ordered them.

Thanks for the warning, but I have also read about people warning about freezing temps and that this can also hurt them. But I am no expert. With the slow shipping timeframes these days, I am thinking it might be colder when they finally get to me.

I am going to take my chances and just order them now.

Ordered two originals...

Black - Violet with orange lava

Copper - Blue with blue lava

Two pod candle lava lamps...

Blue with yellow lava & Yellow with orange lava

I guess the next step is to wait for them to arrive at F2Me? Then pay to have them shipped?

This will be cool! I have never owned one, one of my brothers had one in the 70/80’s.

I watched some videos/reviews on them last night that were made in the UK.

Mathmos has its own YouTube channel with some good videos. This one shows how they make them by hand.

I also noticed that they had them for sale on amazon.uk. But they were out of the colors I wanted. Amazon prices were a little cheaper if they have what you want. But not sure about whether they charged for shipping. Mathmos did not charge for shipping. They did charge a VAT though.

Edit: the candles were on sale.

Awesome. Yes, just keep an eye on it to see when Forward2Me receives it. It took a few days for them to log it and mark it as ready to ship. Then you just pay and they send it out to you. If I remember right it was really quick to go from Mathmos to F2M. Like two days I think.

I spent a lot of time on that forum last night. I looked under my cap and it has a date of may 1991 so it has held up pretty well. I really want some more now after seeing all the new ones. I really like the ones Mathmos has that mount on the wall.

#65 3 years ago

i have a huge one somewhere in storage, like 3 times the size of most, need to do some digging and find it.

Those look very nice. I am just wondering how hard it will be to convert to 120v.

Once I receive my first batch from Mathmos, I might buy those.

I wonder if finding the right bulbs will be a problem with everything going to LED .

#68 3 years ago

I use a couple lava lamps to heat a corner of our gameroom in the winter.

I picked up a dozen 40W incandescent bulbs on Amazon for $2 each. Should be good for a while.

Find one of the big ones and it has a variable lamp switch. Can turn it down "real low" for great night light.

Henry Ford museum still sells the spaceship ones.

Ha. I found this lava rocket in Chicago for $10 and had a friend pick it up last summer. Still waiting for a good pin to buy in the area so I can get the lamp.

Darren, too bad you won’t be coming to Expo or you could have gotten it then.

I've had this one a loooong time - the astronaut is an alarm clock and motion sensor w blue eyes that light up and arms that move.

Howard, still have tickets for VFW and waiting to hear what the next plan is. I am done with Expo. Bummed that Allentown didn’t happen and York will probably fall too to the Plandemic.

Since you guys have gotten me into buying some Mathmos lava lamps, I am learning a lot about them.

You can buy them from Mathmos.com

Mathmos also has a European website mathmoseurope.eu

The European site has a few additional color combinations that the UK does not currently have for sale.

Amazon UK also sells them, but with less options.

You can purchase replacement bottles if needed.

Mathmos also seems to be offering limited edition production runs a unique color combinations for collectors. They are only offered for sale for a single day.

Mine arrived last Friday. Mathmos are worth the extra cost to me. Very nice right out of the box with no issues.

Forwrad2me was 2 day shipping. Very fast and had no issues.

I like them so much I have ordered some more.

If you don't mind, could you give a dumb guy like me a quick how-to on buying a lamp from Mathmos and shipping it here to the states? I'd appreciate it.

Create an account on Forward 2 Me. Order from Mathmos and have it shipped to the UK address that F2M lists. When they get it, pay F2M and they ship it to you.

My next question is this; do I need to worry about Pounds to dollars or is it an automatic conversion by my bank or PayPal? Never bought directly from a UK site before.

Automatically converts from the . Your bank might charge you an international conversion fee of a buck or two on top.

No, I kept them original. Bought a transformer from Grainger and a EU power strip from Amazon. Works great and I can always add more lamps to the one power strip. In fact I plan to. I ordered more!

What he said. Set up the forward2me account. They will give you an address in the UK. Then order the lamps using the address. Wait for the package to arrive at F2Me. You will receive an email when it arrives. 2 days to get from Mathmos to F2Me. Sign in to F2Me and set up the shipping. Then 2 days to your house. If you order over the weekend. They will be at your home by the end of the week. It’s not cheap! Lamp charge, 20% VAT Charge. Then the shipping charge by F2Me and insurance charge if you choose to pay for it.

I think the exchange rate from pound to dollar was something like 1.35 dollars to 1 pound if I remember correctly.

I also ordered their iO lamp. It won’t be ready to ship until late September they say. It is like 2.5 feet tall looks cool.

If you’d like one you can not only look at but also actually play with, look around for lava lamps that use ferro fluid.

There’s a bunch of them out there in various shapes, sizes and styles - including rocket ship. Do read the reviews as quality varies.

Here’s one: https://www.vat19.com/item/ferrofluid-motion-lamp

I had a small get-together last night, just 4 friends from our league. I had all 7 lamps going, and I definitely think it brought the fun level up a notch. We ended up hanging out around the 27” grande a lot.

#97 3 years ago
Quoted from Karl_Hungus:

They sell the same lamps at Menards, but for about half the price.

Sort of. Menards doesn't have anywhere near the selection we do at Spencer's, and the vast majority of the ones Menards sells are cheaper models anyway. While Spencer's is higher priced, we have far more variety and selection, as well as everything you need to make your Pinball room even more awesome

For those that might be interested, Mathmos announced today on their Facebook page that they are going to be releasing new color combinations over the next few weeks for all of their lamps. Today a yellow/pink combo was released for the Neo line.

So if I buy direct from Mathmos, I have to buy some sort of 110 converter?
