I saw a Harley Davidson one once. Had clear liquid and black goo. Looked like thick black oil, kind of. Looked really neat.

I bought a pink lava lamp from Spencer’s 25 years ago. Still got it!!

Almost scared to google 'oozing goo' and 'goo kit'.

I have a couple that are really old now and take some time to get flowing but once warmed up still look great. I also have two that are plasma inside and a spiral plasma.

These were dealer parts department displays, hard to find. I picked this one up about 15 years ago, my lamp here is cold obviously but it’s black oil.

I've got a tall red one stuffed in a closet somewhere. The glass must be something like 18" tall. Haven't turned it on in years. It took at least an hour to heat up and get going.

Yes they can be temperamental. And make sure a fan or AC isn’t pointed at it or it’ll never get going.

I have a Volcano lava lamp to go with my Gottlieb Volcano pin.

A guy I bought a pin off of had 20-30 of them. They were set on timers to turn on well before he got home and warm up so he could chill out and listen to music with a cold beverage in his lava lamp lounge. That is lava lamp dedication.

I've always wanted a lava lamp, but I've never been able to get my hands on one...

I've got two. One was a birthday gift when I turned 10 (so 33 years ago) and the other is probably years old. Neither work, and I've be been working on getting them fixed diy style with little luck so far.

I watched this making of video just the other week.

I used to have 6 or 8 of them in high school. Not sure what became of them... probably got sent to goodwill.

I have a 'Cranky' that I got as a gift in the mid-90s, along with a few different color globes. It had not been turned on in over 20 years, but I happened to run into it a few days ago while going through some old things. Then I saw this thread and decided to go dig it out. I installed a new bulb and amazingly it still works great.

True story.......I had a girlfriend gift a new lava lamp to me once. I asked why a lava lamp? She said all her new boyfriends get a lava lamp from her. Wonder if anybody here knows this girl. She was actually pretty smoking hot and only a touch crazy. BTW.....I don't talk/or see her anymore. Still have the lamp though.

I bought a Mathmos and had it shipped here a few months ago. You just have to use a third party shipper that gives you a UK address to have Matnos send it to them. I need to convert it to 110v still. Kinda forgot about it. I’ll get to that.

When my daughter was very young we used a lava lamp as a nightlight for her bedroom.

The brand we are stuck with in the US is fairly junkish, and the big issue with the “lava” is the absence of a particular chemical here. It makes them very, very temperamental. Typically, they end up getting too hot and your lava just stays afloat and doesn’t circulate.

The best solution I have found for the US sold models is to use a dimmer switch cord with them, and dial in the temperature that your lamp runs best on. Also, the bigger models tend to be easier to regulate. The smallest ones are useless b/c they heat up too much to allow the lava to cool at all.

They sell the same lamps at Menards, but for about half the price.

I discovered this fact in 1990 when college roommate from hell had a friend turn over slightly annoying college roommate’s lava lamp to shake it up. Unlike those of us who lived in the suite, the friend didn’t know about the broken cap and proceeded to shake the contents out across our living room, where it then sat and congealed bc RFH and SAR fought over who should clean it. Decent roommate and I had nothing to do with the party (and were sick of the two of them destroying the suite on us, so we moved out early, leaving the two of them to eventually deal with the clean up and paying the damages.

But other than that one miserable incident, I love lava lamps!

Looks like it's belly button is an outtie not an innie.

I had one as a kid that gave up the ghost finally. Then I got another one and it sat on my desk for years. Used it every day. When I retired I brought it home and it's in my home office now. Doesn't get used as much.

Hey speaking of Lava lamps before my job forced me to move I had one of the original Colossus lava lamps yep the one that was around 4 feet tall sold it because I did not want to chance the 300 mile trip the glass was not very thick it used a 200 watt heating lamp. Bought it for $700 sold it for $1300. This lamp was just something to see once the lava got going it took about 5 hours to heat up its been about 2 years since I sold it and its in a vape, head shop in Akron Ohio.
