Yesterday morning at 10am I went in for LASIK (all laser). Got both eyes done, went home, took the best nap of my life to sleep off the Valium and woke up at 5pm and could see!

Post Op exam this morning has me at 20/15 vision.

First thing I did today was install a Cliffy lane protector on my Firepower!

Anyone else in the hobby ever experience this amazing feat in human ingenuity?

11 years ago, I treated myself to Lasik as a 60th birthday present. I started wearing glasses/contact lenses at the age of 7. Best 4 grand I ever spent. Enjoy.

I’m actually mad at myself for waiting this long. It was raining this morning and just not having to worry about cleaning my dumb glasses off walking in the rain was so awesome.

#4 3 years ago

I actually had lasik in June 2000. Previously had 20/500 vision in both eyes. Was nearly blind. Came out with 20/15 vision. I’m now 43 years old and 20 years later I still have 20/20 vision. Best money ever spent

#5 3 years ago

One of the biggest things I noticed is how much more sensitive my eyes are to peeling onions.

#6 3 years ago

I want to do this. I’m very nervous about getting this done. I keep putting it off.

#7 3 years ago

Had it done last October. Zero side effects and I have the eyes of a hawk now. Still
suck at pinball.

#8 3 years ago

Had it done 7 years ago at 43yo.
Now 50 and the close up vision is starting to go.

#9 3 years ago

I had it done about 20 years ago. It lasted about 8 years for me to get back to the point that road signs were hard to read again. Then I had it done again and it lasted about 8 more years. Then I went to have it done a third time and they said they'd decided it was no longer safe to lift up an old flap to redo lasik more than a year after the initial surgery. So I had PRK done on one eye. I'm currently about 20/20 in the good eye and maybe 20/50 in the bad eye. Getting close to redoing the bad eye, but worried that it will make reading tough. That's why they recommended keeping one eye for near vision and one eye for far vision after age 40.

#10 3 years ago

Is it still the case that LASIK can correct for nearsightedness OR farsightedness, but eventually you need reading glasses again? I’ve worn glasses since age 9, and i much prefer contacts instead of heavy glasses but they irritate my eyes after a few hours. Have been considering LASIK for years.

Yep. See my post above. It only corrects what's wrong now. If your eyes were going to keep changing for life, that won't stop. Kinda sucks...

#12 3 years ago

Good for you guys! I am so jealous. I am the reverse. I always had perfect vision. I had an accident in 2010 that damaged my retina in my right eye. They saved the retina but I lost my cornea in that eye. Now I would have to get a cornea transplant to see again out of that eye. I have been reluctant to do it because I had sooo many surgeries on that eye that my doctor told me it wasn't worth spending the money on it. But I sure would like to see out of it again.

#13 3 years ago

I can say that LASIK was the best present I could give myself. Not having to deal with contacts and glasses for video games and sports has been amazing. I get to use this gift of improved sight every day and try not to forget how awesome it is that we have this abilities with modern technology.

#14 3 years ago

I had LASIK in January 2006 and it was one of the best things I've ever done. My vision is still awesome.

#15 3 years ago

Thought of getting this done but just don't want to mess with my eyes. I have heard of side effects and losing sight, just don't ever want to think about.

#16 3 years ago
Quoted from Edster:

I was the same way. My brother got it done 2 years ago and has been busting my balls ever since to get it done. Then I watched a video on it and was like NOPE!!!

My eyes became intolerant to contacts because of the type I needed for astigmatism. That pushed me to just say screw it and go through with it.

Laying there as they put the eye lid holders in and watching the machine line up the laser is probably the closest thing to getting abducted by aliens as I could imagine. But the whole thing lasted about 30 seconds per each eye. And now that I went through with it I’m so glad.

It’s like flying on a plane the first time. Yeah it’s scary but now you’re at your destination having a blast on vacation.

#17 3 years ago

Been a long time now but had both eyes done in a mobile surgical unit (was in a semi trailer set up in a parking lot that moved from city to city) think he spent about 6 min total on both eyes cost $600 . Long range vision is great but cant read as well and use +1.5 ‘s to read

#18 3 years ago

I had my eyes done 20 years ago. I started wearing glasses in 3rd grade and by the time I had the surgery I could not read the alarm clock on the night stand when I would get up in the morning.

#19 3 years ago

I just picture it being something like A Clockwork Orange...

Very Ludovico Technique Lol

Just kidding, there isn’t any brainwashing going on.

My wife wants to do this. Have to admit it freaks me out. Am I wrong to be worried? What's with the flap not healing thing? I'm in southern Wisconsin and I'm not even sure where I'd bring her to get this done.

I always think of that old King of Queens episode where Doug sets up his wife to get her eyes done and it's a low quality place and she ends up nearly blind.

No sugar coating man, it’s worrisome and scary, then you get it done and you’re like “Wait that’s it?!!! You’re done already? Holy crap that’s awesome!”

Then you have amazing vision

Definitely research doctors in your area, don’t go to some back alley cut rate eye clinic.

This is who I used in northeast Ohio. Not a help for WI unless you want to do a road trip but I’m sure you could find a great place by you.

my friend did it some years ago, now he has chronic dry eyes and has to use eye drops every 3-4 hours. to keep them lubed up, must have been a poorly trained doctor.

#27 2 years ago
Quoted from EricHadley:

I wanted to do this for about 10 years and every annual visit to my eye doctor I would ask about it and he would always say I’m not a candidate because of my astigmatism. My brother got it done and told me the same story. So I went for a consultation and there’s a whole procedure dedicated to astigmatism. Needless to say I didn’t get Xmas cards from my normal eye doctor the last 2 years.

#28 2 years ago

I had it done 7 years ago and it was one of the best things that I ever did. I did see halos around lights at night for almost a year, but that went away as my corneas healed, which can take that long I was told. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I wonder if he got the lasik or prk procedure?

I have no idea, but no one touching my peepers unless its absolutely necessary

#31 2 years ago

Gosh I have been debating about doing this for like 10 years now. I just keep hearing the horror stories and freaking myself out of doing it. I think it’s time to just jump in and do it.

#32 2 years ago

My wife had the proceedure done 20 years ago. She couldn't identify our kids at 5 feet away and now shes 20/20 since. Scary yes but the process has come a LONG way since then. People like to cling to old horror stories and yes things can happen but this truely is a miraculus proceedure. Best money we ever spent.

#33 2 years ago

I had it done about 8-9 years ago now, had one eye re-tuned immediately after, and was 20/20 in both, though I hadb still have some star bursts/halos on lights. Now I'm pretty much at the point I need glasses again for distance vision, starring to get a little fuzzy.

I was like 20/400 or something originally, couldn't read the alarm clock or see worth a shit at any distance, so still a huge improvement. Would've liked to get closer to actual old age before my eyesight deteriorated this far already though (I'm 44 now)...

Does LASIK help at all with night vision?
Never mind... found answer. The usual "it depends/maybe +/-" type of answer. Oh well.

One of the biggest things that I noticed was driving at night in the rain. Such a huge improvement.

Anyone here get the PRK procedure vs the lasik?

Quoted from pcprogrammer:

(not a doctor) but when my wife went in for a consideration exam they help guide you on Which process is best for your vision issue And the condition of your eyes. I personally would consult with an eye care specialist to determine the best option for You vs which has the best marketing. I still say its a remarkable technology and life changing for many in their lifestyle.

#38 2 years ago

I was going to say I don’t think you get to really choose so to say, one or the other because it’s a different option to help with different conditions.
The exception to that would probably be the SMILE technique, where the laser shoots through the top layer of the eye and then a super small incision is used to pull the laser-ed tissue out.

With mine it was with 2 lasers.
Laid on the table and the table pivoted under the first laser
7 seconds per eye, just watch the dancing green dot while the laser does a semicircle cut, didn’t even know what was happening just kind of laying there waiting for them to say something
Then the table rotated me under the other laser
This is where the doctor lifted the top layer of the eye, things get extremely blurry but for 15 seconds you watch the green dot dance around again feeling nothing other than coping with the thoughts in my own head haha
Then they put in eye drops and make you blink and basically your eye surface instantly bonds back together and that was it.
They sat me up, walked me over to a chair and made me look at a giant picture of David Bowie while the 2 doctors checked me out and that was it. It was like 5 minutes from when I first laid down to when they walked me out of the operating room.
Cheaper than a pinside marketplace BSD

Both. I had my left eye done for the third time back in August. That makes 3 on both eyes. Two LASIK and one PRK. Supposedly they no longer will do LASIK enhancements more than a year after the initial treatment as lifting the original flap is considered too risky (what they told me the third time around). They lifted the flaps when I had them done the second time after about 7 years.

This third treatment on the left eye is the first time I didn't end up 20/20. I went from not seeing any letters at all on the driving test (just white nothing) to a blurry 20/25. This third treatment included lifetime free enhancements, so I'll probably get that eye done again in a year or so.

#40 2 years ago

Nothing beats the cold table, clicking laser and the smell of burnt hair...

Well worth the money.

Anyone watch the green dot dance around lately?

#42 1 year ago

After dithering around for ages, I had Lasik done around 2 months ago.

Firstly - the procedure was pretty terrifying. All the cutting and lasering. Had a mild panic attack half way through lol. After the surgery my eyes felt like someone had stabbed them with a hot soldering iron. I doubled down on the meds they gave me and it was fine in the morning.

Unfortunately I’m one of the few that it didn’t work out for. My close up vision is fine (around 2 feet) but long distance is crap. Driving is a mission, and I’m taking it very easy for now.

They said give it some time and see if it comes right … I thought it had improved a little but the tests they did said it hadn’t.

So I’m back for another blast on the “long eye” in a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately that meant my Brisbane Masters pinball tournaments all went to shit as I couldn’t really see the ball well in low light situations. I’m ok at my place, it’s very well lit. But if the light is low, I suck. Haha.

I hope it works out this time so I can regain my former skills!

That’s a bummer man.
I always tell anyone getting it done that it’s like being abducted by aliens. Sucks you had a bad experience, hopefully round 2 gets you 100%.

#44 1 year ago

I had it prob 30 years ago in my late 20s, wore glasses since 6 years old. Vision was great til about 10 years ago when close up vision started going. Generic reading glasses helped but now distance vision is degrading to the point that I have both prescription reading glasses and bifocals. Maybe I should look into getting them touched up.

#45 1 year ago

Had it done in 2006. Went in the next day after surgery and my vision was 20/15.

And still is to this day. No regrets.

#46 1 year ago

Just saw this thread. i had mine done 18-20 yrs ago. best decision i ever made. I was fortunate, i had a friend tell me about going to Canada to get it done. I got it all done for $1300, vs 3500-4000 here. i drove to Windsor (3 hrs). The Dr. i had was an associate professor at the college most of the guys around here went to. my vision is 20/20 to 20/25. But i do have to have cheaters, thats been within the last couple of years. But i was told that upfront. it is normal part of the ageing process.

#47 1 year ago

Not recently, had my eyes made about 10 years ago and I still have great sight *knocks on wood*. Very happy with the decision to have the surgery done.

#48 1 year ago

I had mine done in 2020, best decision in my life. I wish I did it sooner, It's nice hot having to search for glasses and being able to wear cool sunglasses.

My procedure went well and I've enjoyed the benefits of LASIK for about 8 years now. I did it for all the reasons folks mention here. I have noticed some "drift" in my sight lately and its not as sharp as it once was. Once you have that, its hard to not want it forever.

#50 1 year ago

Proud wearer of spectacles, always have been always will be. Only worth doing if they can make your vision x-ray while they're at it.
