Quoted from CraigL2112:

1. I recently did a flipper rebuild and while that completely cleared up the sticking issue, it did not solve the problem where the left flipper is unquestionably weaker than the right. Seems like a coil replacement (https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/090-5000-00) is in order here. This is the same part number as the stock Beast coil -- any reason why it won't work?

maybe... but don't forget to check your cabinet switches first & perhaps also double check gap on new EOS switch after the flipper rebuild

Sending good wishes on the repair.

Thanks! it came out great ... really pleased with the results here are a few pics. to document it.... looks better in person than the picture shows I like it so much I don't think it even needs the artwork anymore ...looks like a big red jewel in there now compared to how it was & plays nice & smooth too

The gap on both flipper EOS switches are more or less identical. What cabinet switch are you referring to? It's also worth noting that the left flipper even sounds different than the right when firing. Also, both coils are still originals!

these... the ones where the flipper buttons are located on side of/inside of cabinet .... the ones behind the plastic flipper buttons on side of cabinet

Hey all, my family has a Laser War we've owned about 35 years.

The right outlane has always seemed brutal. I was back at my parent's house tonight and noticed there is no post on the right outlane. There are three holes to adjust where one can be placed but they are all empty. They look like a post was never installed.

Does anyone else have a playfield where no one ever installed that post?

I'd like to put one in as it is brutal without it.

Does anyone have one off a old parts playfield they are willing to part with or know a site I can buy one from?

The missing post is the one circled in the pic below.
Thanks!

You can get posts all day from any of the pinball parts suppliers. I am not near my laser war, you will need to determine what kind of fastener holds the post down. Usually adjustable outlane posts are machine threaded screws that go into a plate under the playfield, but sometimes they are just wood screw-tipped. Take a close look, it should be obvious.

I'm just waking up enjoying my coffee so I'll do some work for you:

There is no plate under, it just screws into the wood. Mine is in the middle position and I still lose a lot of balls down that side. Was just thinking about moving it down to the next spot. I can see from marks on the playfield that it has been in all 3 positions at one time or another.

Hi,

Just starting out on a project LW in reasonable state.
I got it going, but I can't seem to find the plastics for sale anywhere.
In particular I'm missing the one outlined in red here.
Does any one have one for sale ?
I would be willing to buy the whole set if that's what's available.
If you would happen to have a set of spinner decals as well that'd be awesome ... shipping from the US from commercial websites costs too much

Mad Amusements seems to be the only place to get replacement ramps now. I asked Freeplay40 about making them, but he won't as long as they are already available to purchase... even if it is only from Mad Amusements.

I now have a clearcoated playfield waiting to be populated, so I'm ordering the needed parts.

But for the life of me I can't figure out which rear playfield glass trim it is that belongs to this game ... is it part number 03-8091 ?

I have a laser war that I'm thinking of selling but I have no idea what it's worth. I was wondering if I could get some help in determining value before I list it. Have has a couple issues. I have a couple lights that are not working and a Target or two that can be difficult. I'm assuming that I need to have the solder reflowed on the boards also as sometimes when turned on it will have a loud hum for a minute until it warms up and then it goes away.

Such a nice game with bad instruction cards.....
It seems I need to update the cards for this game.
Can you send or post a clear image (without insert) of the right side card please?

Be sure to add fuses before the rectifiers in the backbox.
Or put in one of my Bridge Boards.

Looking for some help. We recently acquired a Laser War. It seems to have unlimited balls per game. We have tried getting to adjustment menu however we only seem to be able to scroll through tests (sound display lamps switches) Also maybe related maybe not when we started a 3 player game player 1 plays 1 ball then it just goes to game over. Is that Data East resetting?

Thanx in advance Pinside Peeps

Okay I have to ask a couple more questions.... lol

Has anyone printed a new ion cannon... Not that mine is bad. I am trying to eliminate the yellowing done on the plastic... but it is brittle as shit. A new one would be awesome.

Second... I saw a decal file out there... but I have no way of printing them. Anyone want to help a brother out?

Lastly, I love you all.

Here are some before pics... I could kick myself for not taking one good photo of the entire playfield BEFORE we started to tear it down... ah well. Next project.

So this game was DIRTY! it looks as if one time the glass broke on it because I am STILL finding glass months later in every crevice. Rubbers were nasty, they mylar was cracked yellow and coming off. The pops were filthy. The plastics were all yellow. The right sling plastic had a dinosaur on it (from JP DE). The ramp's chrome was almost all off, plus it had about 3 separate fiberglass repairs. as you can see just left of the ramp someone decided to hammer nails in the playfield as a quick fix to stabilize the metal guard rail... the game barely worked.... blah blah blah.

Touch up, clean up, tear down... and clear coat.... I used the KBS Diamond clear coat. 2 coats rolled on. Don't laugh at my flipper... I could not get that bolt to budge to save my life.... the alan wrench damn near stripped the stupid thing. I said the hell with it and did my best to clear around it. It looks great, I don't think it will affect anything. Other than that... everything went well. 2 coats of clear, wet sanded with 800,1200,1500,2000 grit sand paper. Buffed with swirl remover, and then with machine glaze.

How it sits today.... got some powder coat done and starting to reassemble... redid the pops, new plastic cones and of course new rubbers from Titan Pinball. Went with color changers in the pops with a clear housing everything else on the GI is white, with the exception of the color coded stand ups. I thought the clear houseing pops with the color changers will look like a reactor of sorts... fits a bit with the laser theme right???

Right now I have a NOS ramp, so I am in the process of removing the yellowing on the ion cannon. I have to drill out the rivets on the old ramp... I have a pop rivet gun coming in the mail soon.. I will put all that together... I am thinking we need some mirror blades and I can finally turn this bad boy on to see how bad I messed up! lol

Oh and yes those are sling plastics from another game. I am having a hard time finding new sling plastics. So for right now the red plastics for High Speed are working out and kind of pop with the powder coat. I don't hate them. They just don't go with the rest of the plastics obviously.

Are you talking about the flipper button switches themselves? or the Flipper Assembly?

Flipper button switches themselves
Mounted to the cabinet

#340 4 years ago

Here you go... I have the flipper led kit on it... so ignore the led stuff. but the switches are stock. There is a black plastic housing the button sits in. I have never seen one personally. But you can see it in the pictures. it literally is loose and just sits in there.

Hello all! I have a Laser War that my 12 year old son and I are finally working on restoring. It has a crappy cabinet that was screwed together at some point, paint is flaking from it, etc. He has started to touch up the cabinet with black marker paint. It looks much better than it did. We are at the point where most of the playfield is stripped. I have bought a new plastics set, new spinner decals but am finding that the pop bumper decals are NLA. Has anyone re-printed them anywhere? if so can I buy some from you?? I am also of course looking for the main ramp, as i think mine was melted at some point, or is an early version or something, as I see pics that the ramps were chrome in color, and mine is like a dull shitty grey. Also, the middle "laser cannon thing" is of course yellowish and crappy looking. How does one replace the bulbs in it? Are there pics anywhere of what it is supposed to look like when removed from the playfield? Mine has a wooden dowel that sits on the playfield. Mine has factory mylar that my son wants to remove, but I am a little afraid to do that task, as I have heard it is not an easy task and I don't want to wreck the paint underneath. Does anyone have suggestions or colors to match the pop bumpers at the bases of them, mine are quite worn down and now would be a good time to re-paint them, or just leave them as they are (wood color is nice, isn't it?)

These are my issues at the moment. I know the game also will have some backbox/possible board issues as some genius at some point cut a few wires and wire-nutted them together (not sure why, or how i'm going to fix it) but my son has said since he was about able to talk that he wanted to fix up this machine with me, and he is holding me to it!

We have other games, but I haven't really done work on them in 15 years. This one has been sitting for at least 20 untouched.

I can take pics if anyone is interested.

Also, any suggestions on replacing (or should I not bother) to replace the plastic in the back of the game that has the flashers rivited to it?

Thanks Ahead!

Erik

Where did you get a new plastics set???

Ramp
http://mad-amusements.com/product.php?id_product=321 (you will have to find someone to chrome it) I just left mine black (look at post above)

I replaced my pop bumper housings completely (again see above) but I have not seen any decals for the pops.

Yellowed Cannon: Just use this trick to brighten it back up. Worked for me. Took 4 days in the sun but it came out looking much nicer.
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/say-goodbye-to-old-yellowed-plastics

Cannon is removed by just one screw. It comes right off and you can see the bulbs underneath and are easy to replace.

Removing mylar is easy... but that would then lead your game unprotected. I had to remove the mylar on mine because it was dull and gross. I then clear coated the whole playfield.

Easiest way to remove mylar:

remove glue under mylar:

If you are painting around the pops I highly recommend clear coating then. Just to protect them. I matched them up by eye.

Please just read through this tutorial: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/vids-guide-to-ultimate-playfield-restoration

It will guide you on how to fix most stuff...

I have a spare..... but you would have to rebuild it somehow. When it's powered on some of the wires get really hot and the plastic coating starts melting. Probably a short inside somewhere. Not sure how to fix that myself.

There is also another equivalent transformer number you can look for. I will get the number for you so you can expand your search. I ended up purchasing the other one since I couldn't find that specific part number one that is in the game. It is plug and play.

#347 4 years ago

010-5002-00 is a plug and play substitute. I had one in my Data East Playboy 35th Anniversary, swapped it over for a try after checking the pinouts and it works perfect. Found one of those for my Laser War before I found the original 5000.

I replaced my pop bumper housings completely (again see above) but I have not seen any decals for the pops.
Yellowed Cannon: Just use this trick to brighten it back up. Worked for me. Took 4 days in the sun but it came out looking much nicer.

Mayfair Amusements still has NOS plastics set for this game. The man has a website from 20 years ago, but if you send him an e-mail he will reply. You could also try and call him as well. He goes to many pinball shows and brings a bunch of parts. He is always at Allentown (well, except for this year of course). Here is his info:

MAYFAIR AMUSEMENT Co.

Ridgewood, NY 11385
Tel: 718-417-5050
FAX: 718-386-9049
E-mail: [email protected]

He even still has the spinner decals if you need those as well.

Thanks for all of the other tips and tricks above, i'll check them out for sure. I'm not sure if I dare pull the mylar or not....i'll show the videos to my son and see if he is up to it with me...

After that will be some wiring I am sure I'll need help with. Pics to follow soon, as I'm waiting to get my LED's from Titan to put the PF back together...and will decided if I should pull or not pull the mylar.

Quoted from Pinstein:

I made a new laser war translite but Im not sure if the displays line up correctly. If anyone wants to mail me their factory translite to dial it in, I will return it including a new alternate. Thanks![quoted image]

I can do that. Please let me know your address.

Laser War joins as my seventh Data East.

Most of the coils were dead and the battery holder is broken on the MPU but aside from that booted up and all the lights worked. Spent the last 48 hours fixing the coil situation, repairing some connectors, swapping over to LEDs, adding fuses to the bridges, repaired the ion cannon screw mount, replacing the elastics, flattened two warped plastics, unbent the coin door, installed a new lock, shimmed the display board, replaced a broken flipper spring and added an extra bulb behind the yellow base.

I started out with a regular LED but it was somewhat dim so installed a 4+1 tower which looked much better (see photos) I have a yellow tower on order from Comet to match the base. The various bases have the colors matched to their respective base colors.

NVRAM on order as is some additional leds from Comet!
