My Data East - Last Action Hero mpu locks up after about 10 minutes of play. If I try to reset the game immediately it won't boot up but if I wait for 30 minutes or so it will start again but the mpu freezes up in no time again. It has 4.8-4.9 volts at the IC chips and none of the 12 or 5 volt readings seem to change over time. I replaced some caps on power and mpu board and also the bridge rectifier on the power board. I also replaced the processor with no change. Is this a power issue or is something happening with the memory after it warms up?

Quoted from thedefog:

Heat related issue/cold solder probably on the PSU on a connector. Something is expanding n then needs to cool off to work again. Are you experienced w soldering? A reflow on all solder pads could potentially fix this if ur comfortable w soldering.

That's what I figured. I'm not really nervous about soldering I'm just not excited to do the work and then find the problem wasn't fixed.

Did you replace C2 100uf 25v cap on the power supply?
This is the source of almost every DE/Sega game I repaired the past 2 years.
As even noted in Pinwiki, this can even burn the trace/feedthrough if the corrosive content of the capacitor leaks out. If you look at the board and see what looks like flux underneath C2, then it has already leaked.
Replace C2 with 100uf 35v or 50v cap.

I did replace C2. I'm going to double check what I put in there later. Thanks.

Quoted from ChrisHibler:

The issue may be any of the hundreds of connections of data, address, and control signals on the board. This is where a can of freeze spray might help. Seems like a good idea, but in truth, I've never sorted a problem successfully with that alone.
When the game locks up, probe the address and data signals. That might give you a hint.

Can you explain a bit more about the freeze spray.
Thanks!

Quoted from thedefog:

Hmmm. Well nothing ventured...
Probably MPU related then. Has the MPU seen any repair work previously? Any alkaline damage?

Some small damage from a leaky cap but I used some baking soda to neutralize it and cleaned everything really thoroughly.

I flowed a good portion of the mpu after the power board reflow didn't work.

Which cap? What board?

C157 near the Ground and +5V test point.
