As some of you might have guessed, I'm working on a modification to the Last Action Hero firmware to address some things that I feel could have been done better. Number one on that list was the lame wizard mode, World Premiere. My goal has not been to significantly change the game, just make some of the less interesting modes more fun.

Change List:
*Improve World Premiere - now a multiball mode; 1 ball is added to play every 10 seconds; shots to the ramp add 5M to the award ceiling; collect at the scoop
*Special is awarded when bonus value exceeds 25M; this was never lit before if your game award wasn't set to special.
*Tilt warnings adjustment is now 0-5 inclusive; was 0,1,or 3
*Go to the Movies Mode - starts as a 2-ball multiball; hits to the captive balls award 5M X number of balls in play
*Knocker fires for Extra Balls as well as replays
*"Special" animation plays for special even if award type is set to extra ball
*Time based ball saver added, including flashing Shoot Again insert while active; ball saver restarts after ball lock and after LAH 6-ball multiball
*Match percent can now be set as high as 50%
*Ripper bounty increases 4X faster than before; now it's an award you might actually shoot for sometimes
*Second cousin frank award increases 4X faster than before; now it's an award you might actually shoot for sometimes
*Slightly longer ripper save, for when that ball shoots straight between the flippers and lingers just long enough to not get a "don't move."
*Modified "extra easy" mball captive hit requirements to start MBall. Now 2 hits lights MBall, 1 hit automatically awarded for each new ball; subsequent MBalls take 2 more hits than previous.
*Added 8 new voice quotes to various modes of the game.

You should be able to spot (and hear) some of the changes in this short video:

Anyone have any other ideas of things to add to this mod?

I am curious how many of you are interested in getting this when it gets released, so chime in. Also looking for beta testers that own an LAH, don't mind the slight risk of running modified code (I always test it first), and have access to an EPROM burner and a blank EPROM.

Thanks for looking.

Phenomenal stuff. Too many games out there that need a bump such as this. If I had a LAH I'd help you out...

I don’t know, other than the 4x increasers which is a cool idea, nothing else is jumping out at me as something I really care to change. I’m intrigued with the final version, but I just don’t see enough significant change to really want to change.

It’s great you appreciate this machine as much as you do to put this much thought into it, but to me LAH is a machine that has so much already, and I don’t see much need to change. There are so many other machines that need significant changes to even make them playable.

#4 11 years ago

I owned one for awhile. Great game. I never shot for Frank or the ripper, it just wasn't worth it. Great idea

#5 11 years ago

Maybe if he bumped up the value of those shots it would be.

wow wow wow wow wow wowwow wow wowwow wow wow!! I would love to test it out but I don;t have an EPROM burner, could we work out some kind of a deal if you were able to provide the roms? I am having trouble catching the additional vocals, what are they?

#7 11 years ago

Were the voice quotes hidden in the software or added by you?

I hear the game getting confused and playing the "Death Save" sound when you were in World Premier mode.....or was that something you added?

I'm sure I would be all over this (to try) if I still had my LAH. My only criticism from your initial list of things done / to do is....it seems like you are only making changes that make the game easier and I have never heard anyone criticize LAH for being too hard in the first place.

If I still had mine or the rules were fresher in my mind I'm sure I would have some suggestions. I'm sure other owners will have a lot of other cool ideas to try.

Good luck on the game changes.

Any chance of something like this for Back To The Future? It really needs a ball save feature

Awesome I am glad I decided to keep mine...

#10 11 years ago

You should make it so when you hit the skill shot the knocker goes off 3 times and just awards you whatever the Grand Champion score is Kidding!

#11 11 years ago

And I am still on the hunt for an LAH (although I have a few leads) so don't release magical software making the game sky rocket in price until I get my hands on another one

#12 11 years ago

This thread makes me wonder how hard it would be to de-compile the firmware for Baywatch(another DE/SEGA game)??? If I wanted to try to fix the well known skill shot problem of the game, do I just need to find that line of code and add a few more seconds to the upper and right gate's coil pulse to make the gates stay open long enough for the ball to be captured and then shot correctly?

Quoted from DugFreez:

They were unused quotes in the original ROM.

Quoted from DugFreez:

I noticed that when I was testing too. I'm looking at that now...

Quoted from DugFreez:

I guess the main goal is to make it more fun. In terms of too easy, I guess play testing will tell for sure, but I basically I just focused on modes or features that I used to just avoid or wait out (or that you never got before). Now I think they might be interesting enough to try for.

Quoted from Tootai:

I don't own a BTTF, but I imagine it should be possible. You really need to have a working knowledge of how the game plays to be able to begin working on modifying the code behavior. I encourage you to try!

Quoted from dnhayden:

Anything is possible; give it a try!

So no mod requests from the peanut gallery?

I'm about a week away from tearing mine down and shopping it out. It's def going to need new Rom so I hope this turns out fantastic. I'm first in line when its ready. Thanks for all the hard work.

Yeah...I remember "Go to the Movies" being one of the modes it wouldn't let you stack. Those captive balls were never the easiest to hit for me either (especially the left one).

Just a quick update. Beta version is ready to go out. I've heard from a few people, but are there any others interested in beta testing? If you are very familiar with the stock LAH gameplay, and own one, but don't have an eprom programmer, we might be able to work something out. Shoot me a pm.

Also, this is your last chance for feature requests... I'm listening

I'm a little late finding this thread but I have an LAH and love that game
Could you make a pop bumper mode? Similar to super spinner.

Like, shoot 3x ramp and 2 orbits and get super pops hits awards 500k during current ball play?

Adding combos would be fun too and ad some flow to the general game play.

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a volunteer to help me test something out for this project. I need to find someone in / close to Chicago with a working LAH willing to install my mod'ed eeprom in your machine. There's a free copy of the mod in it for your trouble. PM me if interested for details.

#25 10 years ago

I have a LAH and look forward to your mod.

To me WWF & LAH are DE's best games

If I find one close by, clean & priced right my wife is gonna be pissed

Based on your avatar & screen name I think you really mean that

In this world the bad guys can win

#29 10 years ago

lol I'm not only partial to the games I own but Data East did make some great games not just B/W.

#30 10 years ago

I picked up a really nice LAH a couple weeks ago and, WOW, I really love it! This is my favorite DE pin I have owned. There is just so much to do and so many different strategies to go for as soon as you start.

#31 10 years ago

I got my LAH last weekend and am loving it. Picked up a Tommy on Friday. To me, these are the two best DE pins, and I'm super happy to have them. DEs get an unfair reputation in my book. Looking forward to the firmware mod!

#32 10 years ago

I'm glad Stern isn't as up-tight about this stuff as WMS..

great work!

Looking forward to an upgrade - still on 1.05 here so was going to buy the 1.12, but instead I'll wait for yours.

#35 10 years ago

Wow nice work, I have to look for a LAH now....I reluctantly sold my Tommy a few months back to fund tron, and yes I agree it was one of the best DE games along with GNR and LAH of course.

This proposed ruleset is great. One thought is to allow some of the modes to stack - like "go to movies", "find benedict", maybe "red-eye" as well, can't remember offhand which ones you can't stack -or at least end early to go to the next mode. I am more interested in "finishing" than scoring fully.

#37 10 years ago

Turns out there are only a few modes that don't already stack, and they are the ones that involve multiballs. It wouldn't really be feasable to stacks these without a major overhaul of the game code.

#38 10 years ago

Makes sense I've thought about it more since posting. Not sure of the tar pit has ever been used well. I've generally ignored it.

#39 10 years ago

I Might be able to help those who don't have a burner out. We have a couple of them, let me see if we have an extra supply of eproms laying around.

#40 10 years ago

Now if us non LAH owners could only get fairsight to allow custom roms on hahah that would be sweet. The pizza place near my parents had a LAH. Maybe he will throw the rom on I'd swing by there every time if so, or look for my own......

Hi
I live in France, and i've got a LAH, with a french rom.

I'm impressed by the idea of "modding" the rom, and how difficult it can be.
I'm very interested by this new "firmware".
I can burn rom with a friend, living not far from me.

I could be a "beta","pre release" tester.

Also, i'm working on computer science, programmer, so maybe (not sure) i could help, on the code.

Awesome mod! Wish I had an error burner. Love my LAH!

#43 10 years ago

Any more updates?

Is this done on the actual rom, or p-roc?

If rom, can it be dumped so we could use it on virtual pin LAH? oh baby that would be sweet.

#44 10 years ago

Also have a LAH and an eprom burner+eraser....
