I just repainted the coin door and legs on my 1977 Rawhide. The original paint looked odd, like a dull silver. I thought it might have been cadmium plating, but after sand blasting, I could tell it was paint. Based on some recommendations from the forum, I tried Krylon All Surface Metallic Enamel. The cap looked close to the original so I thought I would give it a try. All pieces were sand blasted and cleaned with acetone before paining.

First thing to note, the paint went on nicely. The can has the good blue adjustable nozzle which gave a fine mist and laid down nice even coats. I sprayed three coats with about an hour between each. I gave the parts a week to dry before any handling.

After drying my first impression was that the paint was too shiny. It looked like fake chrome, not the look I was going for. Then as soon as I handled it I noticed that the paint rubbed off, not completely, just the shine seemed to rub off like wax. I thought it might have been some dry overspray but that's not what it acted like. More like a waxy top coating. Almost like Rub 'n Buff if you've ever used that. You can see the paint on my hands and rag. The integrity of the "base coat" was just fine.

This turned out to be a good thing because I liked the finish much better after rubbing it down with a cotton rag. The paint went from a bright silver to a shiny gray, almost like polished lead. In the collage you can see the coin door, half rubbed out on the left and fresh paint on the right. And the freshly painted leg (top right) and after rubbing with a cotton rag (bottom right). It's more obvious in person than the photos show.

The last two pictures show the before and after. It's not an exact match but it's close and looks appropriate for the era. Not sure how I feel about the paint. I'm happy with the result but it sure acts strangely. If you wanted to preserve the original shine, you would definitely have to add a clear coat. If I had to do it again, I might search for a different paint. Just thought I would share in case anyone else was thinking of using this paint.

Thanks for sharing. Looks really good.

I had a Lectronamo years ago, where the previous owner had used a gray hammer finish spray paint on it. It looked alright, but not as good as yours. I'm curious as to what your process was to regrain the coin entrance plate though. That looks brand new.

Thank you. Just 0000 steel wool. I think the grain was fine, not sure why it doesn't show up in the before pic.

I always use Hammer silver or gray matching the legs, back door etc.
