I see 2 Stern Stars Playfields in there, are those CPRs getting reclear or touched up originals?

Also is the FT in there from the early bunch of those NOS you sold earlier this year? Hoping it’s mine since I finally picked up a machine to put it in. Still looking for a mini PF to send up to you to go along with it...

Such a cool set of PFs all on display!

I spy a nice FT in the background

I moved from NC to CA and do not miss that humidity at all…

The FT playfield is looking good Ron! Been hoping it would pop up here sometime. The swap will be a fun project this year…

Dang Ron you've outdone yourself on this one, it's been well worth the wait and I can't wait to see it up close in person as this is my first PF from you. Will be sure to post the pics when I get a chance to install it!

Starbursts look cool in these colors, but I like the original better. I play enough of these bally/sterns that it would feel strange.

Hey Ron - starting to the the swap on that Fish Tales. Have a few questions before I dive in…

What is you opinion on a thin washer under the plastic star posts and some other posts? I didn’t use them on my stars with Stock CPR clear and the clear definitely bulged around them. Any advice on how tight to install all the posts that sit directly on clear? Will be using your kit to clean the holes before screwing in for sure.

There are two little rolled pins in the holes that help you align the flippers, they aren’t proud. Are those critical or serve a purpose? Other pins I have just have a little hole there.

No Mylar is needed right? Assume a coat of wax before populating is suggested?

I’m sure more will come up… thanks!

#1826 2 years ago

Great - thanks for the info! I will be sure to post some pictures here of the swap and anything I learn along the way that might help people out.

Is Blitz 1 Grand wax OK? It's what I use for my other machines...

Just had to make the first cut, there’s no turning back now…

Yeah I def take it off for any hammering. I've been using this method to seat the T-nuts which has worked well so far. Have a large neoprene rubber fender washer with a stack going up to a 8-32 cap screw. Found the cap screws to work better as you can use a allen key to get leverage and it's less likely to strip the head like a hex bolt. I had to run a 8-32 tap through some of the T nuts to get rid of some of the corrosion and make sure the screw goes in easily (lazy and not using new ones). Got a handful of the cap screws to toss them when the threads start to look rough. Got them all in easily on the front and back with this method and no damage to the clear.

How does your clear process differ from HEP? I follow his threads and often see that his clear process is pretty fast and he installs not too long after it’s done. Is he able to achieve the same durability that yours are known for? Given what people pay for his games I’d sure hope so…

Game prices are stupid these days for sure and unfortunately some people are paying them. I’ll leave the newer sterns for bar play and keep tinkering with my old Williams and classic sterns at home…

Slowly working my way through the FT swap. Going smoothly so far, taking my time as not to blow a hole thru the PF. Everything is getting cleaned and tumbled down to the screws. Wiring harness is fresh out of the dishwasher.

Quoted from kruzman:

Are you going to make it so you can disconnect your assemblies with a plug rather than having to desoldier them? Life is so much easier to be able to unplug a couple wires and pull off an assembly and work on it at your bench

Yeah, just waiting on some Molex crimps - they've been hard to track down but have some coming from Pinball Life.

Some wiring porn from the bottom side of your favorite NOS Fish Tales. Slowly getting it back together!

Just wrapped up the Fish Tales swap - here are some pics of the outcome. NOS PF and Plastics, Micro mini boat PF. New stainless hardware. New titan rubbers. Wiring harness dish washed and new coil wraps. All mechs rebuilt and cleaned.

This thing plays fast and smooth! It’s amazing when the PF is completely silent as the ball rolls over it.

Thanks Ron - super stoked to have one of your classic NOS playfields installed!

Looks like I fall into that camp too - very curious to see what you find on that bronze Banzai Run that is headed your way... on the fence if I should send you the upper PF but I think in general those hold up pretty well and it looks pretty good.
