Next paycheck I am going to see if there are some DVD's of rocky and bullwinkle cartoons on ebay. Yes I still use DVD's. I still use LP records. Hell I have a Tube HI FI. No transistors or computer chips except for my cd player that still has a tube powered digital/analogue converter.
Anyway separate rant. hopefully they did a bunch of seasons. I have heard rocky's voice for months while working on this.

Quoted from paulace:

I have those Rocky and Bullwinkle DVD's - they're fun. I wasn't such a big fan of Moose and Squirrel, but those Fractured Fairytales still kill me!

FANTASTIC! My memory is that it was like a variety show, with a bunch of different story lines and characters. Its one of the few cartoons I havent watched with adult eyes now. They are so different than when you were a kid, in the morning watching them. I Look forward to it!

This NOS DR who was quite a bit of work for a nos, but now that they are 30-40 years old the NOS pfs are almost a resto job. Every nos that comes in now, I check the bottom and top edges for the laminate separating, and glue and clamp if necessary. I painted all of the inserts, and the arrow at the top l and the far bottom center hot dog insert had to be pulled and releveled, and then decaled.
The mini pf had to be cut out before I started because cutting it out after the clear would have left some crappy edges on both pfs.
The mini got hung up in the paint area, and I havent painted in a month, so its going to be a month on that, but this main pf is ready for installation.
It is not easy clearing a black pf like this. when you have 8 coats, you have 8 chances to screw up and burry a dustie or an issue, everything shows because the clear is a magnifier. Since its so perfectly flat and clear any imperfection looks like garbage

Quoted from Tophervette:

OMG = I am very afraid to mess that beauty up. I will have to take my sweet time drilling each hole. I think I will start on the back side as a practice. Great work RON.

Absolutely take your time. have fun with it (thats taking your sweet time). Its going to look and play amazing.

So far 2 of the last 4 pfs I have finished, needed to be cleaned, sanded and reshot, then block sanded and polished again. It puts everything else behind including the pf I am working on.
This Iron Maiden needed to be redone, because I didnt like the final coat a nd you cant see a really small issue until you get to the end of the polishing. If I shipped them just sprayed you would never notice the flaw, but once its block sanded and polished you can notice the smallest flaw.
NOW this pf is perfect. I love it, and the customer was very cool about the extra time it took.

In the last 18 months, stargazer, 9 ball, and quicksilver are without a doubt the most popular jobs. It works for me because I love all 3 of those titles and I have never owned one of them. I bought my first pin in 1982-83, and I though I owned almost all of the classic sterns. Nope. I have said it before, but I would love to play this game when it is done, mostly to play with the ball speed, due to stern using big coils, and zero friction resistance on the pf.
In fact this one goes home with a quicksilver I completed about 7 weeks ago.

As you will notice the living room has a full wall of anderson window walls, from floor to ceiling, to bring the outside green and river, and all of the wildlife in with you. Its a truly beautiful view.

Thanks, the acdc is temp, while my sis goes thru the crap she is going thru. I tell everyone I will baby sit or store your games... no charge.
The godzillia is almost overwhelming. except for the mechanzilla, and dropping the building, I dont know what I am doing. Its surreal when I think about how much money is sitting there. If the past is a forcast of the future, I will prob sell it after I get it paid off in a couple years, and get something like a restored black hole, or something really hard to play, but half the price at least.

#2465 1 year ago

So I mentioned that I am trying a new thing, which is to throw in one at a time, used pf's in to my work load. Restore them and put them on the market. For 2 reasons: to cover pfs that are not reproduced and you cant get NOs, and of course the other it to keep my painting and restoration skills current. I realized that you loose that ability when you dont use it for 6 years.
So I finished the Indy 500 that sold

I still have the Rocky and Bullwinkle which is complete

and the sharkys shootout needs 2 more coats, and block/polish and its done.

I just got the next pf. I paid way too much for it, (400 plus ship)but its a game that often has a lot of wear, and I dont see that often. Last Action Hero. My buddy chris has one, and they are one of those games that the license does nothing for me, (like all marvel, hobbit, and pirates of the Caribbean) but the game is sweet!

#2470 1 year ago

I also use colors on my template. I make a sticker out of like 5 pieces of tape and I write out the legend. I make notes of which sides are lined up, and where I stand when I drilled the holes, because that will make a slight difference to stand in the same place when drilling the pf.
Also I like to start out with a small drill bit, and work up for the big holes. plus plexi soesnt like to be drilled with wide bits.
I like these Bosch drill bits. I found that I am best off buying bits made in america or germany. a cheap set will be smoked in one job. They break, and dull super fast, if not all ready. The clear dulls them fast.
So use that dremmil on slow speed. I just ordered some more coarse burr bitts for the install kit, and I am going to include a couple of them as well as the regular 120 grit.

If you need new bits, or any other parts of the kit, just get a hold of me and I will hook you up.

I would appreciate if people who use the kit would let me know which bits they preferred, and if it would be good to have that bit be more coarse. I only use the slow speed on my dremmil in this app.

I found another use for the install kit. I had to remove some inserts on a nos high speed and a nos whirlwind. Both titles are notorious for lifted inserts. So I had to pull 5 between the 2 pfs, and on both pf's they were all the long triangles (thing high speed). Anyway after U removed them I use one of the barrel bits from the kit on the insert hole. I put it on top of the lip the insert rests on, used a coarse bit and that removed the glue. when I use an exacto for this job, I often cut and chip the pf edges around the hole, and thats no good.

Since both of those pfs are over 35 years, I also have a procedure to epoxy the inserts from behind to lock them down for the next 30 years.

#2471 1 year ago

So with your template taped to your pf like that, I suggest using the dremmil before predrilling, and you wont be able to dremmil with the template on, so I would dimple everything with a small bit, then remove the template and dremmil off the clear to the size you will need them drill. It will look much cleaner to dremmil the clear away before drilling in to it.

Many people dont like installing my clear because when you do more thickness than a production clear, you can have chips or just not really clean holes. Unless you use the dremil and install kit to remove a small spot of clear, then drill.
so it adds time, and pros dont like that, but its one or the other. if you want a surface that is going to stay like glass, it has to be thick enough.

#2474 1 year ago

I mostly use the pointed cone bit and then after, i use the flat head barrel to make the hole bigger.

#2476 1 year ago

I strongly suggest micro fiber towels on my clear coat.

"you're a towel!"

1 week later
#2478 1 year ago

Will do on the CP pf. There are a lot of nos floating out there. I think the went out of biz while making that title, because there were a lot of extra pfs sold at expo a couple years later. ( a large pallet for 20 bucks each).

I know someone has been waiting patiently for this pf to be done. Its as good as it gets. I cant imagine how smooth the play will be on the plank! wowza!
This is one of the few remaining NOS pfs. it wont be long at all before there are no more. This is going to be a game that I doubt will ever be on the for sale market.
enjoy!

So here is some amazing news. I have a customer that got spare pfs for all of his games, and had me clear them. He called and said he is interested is selling some, so they get used rather than just sit. Most are nos though some are repros. There are so many I would have to check if you are interested. we havent come up with prices, but that is coming soon. I have been super busy with pf work, but also getting the compound ready for winter, which meant cutting, splitting and stacking 25 face cords of wood, cutting up 6 trees that fell since late summer, and of course the leaves. anyway.. here are some, and I will post more soon. contact me if you have interest. REMEMBER, THESE PFS HAVE ALL BEEN CLEARED BY ME ALL READY between 2-4 years ago.
Simpsons pb party
Breakshot
T3
Fish tales
metallica prem
no good gophers
safecracker
kiss nos
IJ nos
TZ repro
I500
roadshow
champ pub
FH
TAF MB
MM
More coming soon if you are interested in one, say its the NGG, but only if nos, just write me and I will ask, and he will investigate the pf. Most are nos, but its been so long I dont remember. Come to think of it, I cleared for him for like 2 years before he started to consider a repro pf.
I wouldn't be involved if they were going to be priced insane, but this is no fire sale at all. We just want to see some of them installed. Stay tuned for more info.

i WILL SAY IT AGAIN. ALL HAVE BEEN CLEARED BY ME. I am sure I will still get that as the first question.

#2482 1 year ago

Of the pfs I mentioned, I checked on the IJ, safe cracker, road show, champ pub, I 500. all are NOS.
There is no mini pf for the IJ

#2491 1 year ago
Quoted from Tophervette:

I have had my NOS Bally Doctor Who that Ron cleared PF for a couple weeks and I am slowly closing in on the population.
First was the dimple drilling.
Then the use of the PF install kit of Dremel bits to enlarge holes that clear had filled.
More Drilling to enlarge holes so that screw posts bite into the wood. I used 5 different drill sizes for the different size posts and screws.
I installed the bottom of the PF first.
I had to cut new black side rails that I got from Pinball Life.
Attached is a current picture of the top of the PF population.
Next up are ramps/switches and back rail install.
Awaiting Ron to finish the MPF. That part of the install is a whole other job. (Motor, elevator, 2 coils, 4 lights, etc.)[quoted image]

I didnt realize you were so far ahead of the game, I still want to do 2 more coats on that mini, but I will keep it in the front.

I see some really high quality installation work. A while back i was looking at a thread that one of the premier restorers writes, and he was installing one of my pfs. No dremmil, no predrill, just crank'n those screws in with the cordless driver. It looked horrible, I mean embarrassing. Of course it was all my fault, and all of the followers were posting, "wow, I wont be using kruzman, he sucks, why is his work so bad, and so many people love it?" That was the last time I ventured outside this thread.

I have a favor to ask. I am having trouble finding some people I have questions for, that have pfs here. Please make sure the title of your pf is the first word in the subject. Remember I am 55, and I got 2 college degrees without using a computer. Graduated in 91 when some people were getting word process programs for their computers, and dot matrix printers.

I am working on a used BSD, will the owner get a hold of me again? also a quick silver.

I got more than 50 emails yesterday on the collection of WPC nos pf, plus my usual 30-40emails, so I am a bit scattered on keeping track of names. I really appreciate it. thank you

#2492 1 year ago

Here is some good news concerning the WPC pfs.
here is the email of the owner. The reason he is going thru me is he knew I wanted my stuff to go to good homes.. Please first mention you are one of my people. I would very much appreciate that.

[email protected]

His name is chad. I can say confidently that there is no chance of a rip off , scam or anything else.
Here is the letter he wrote this morning, when I said there is so much demand that I cant sell these without having them here to answer questions.

"I can send pictures as you need them. You’re welcome to share my email if your listing what’s available for me. My main objective was to make sure the playfields of high interest end up where you like them. Anything received that doesn’t meet a customer’s expectations will be refunded in full plus shipping. Listing them all might be fun to watch, I’ll handle shipping and whatever questions need my attention. "

So go ahead and get a hold of him.

Looks great tommy!!! How many stargazers have you done now?

So I Wonder:

I have always wanted to ask Paul Faris about this so if any of you know him, maybe you could ask.
At christmas 1979 the movie, Alien came out. I was 12. May parents were divorced and every other weekend it was party time at my dads. he loved the movies, and I dont think he ever noticed the rating system. Never once did he say, "maybe this is a little too rich for the kids" (my sister was 10)
So we went to every rated r movie that came out, plus he was one of the first owners of a vcr, so we has that too. I made it thru alien, in the packed theatre, but just barely. I have no idea how my sister did it.

Bally released space invaders about 2 months later in march of 1980. The game has Gieger or geigier inspired artwork, who did the art for the movie, but it is only on the inserts of the pf, that shows any reference to the video game space invaders. In fact its such an easy swap. They could have changed that game from alien to SI on 45 minutes. I have always wanted to know the story. maybe they couldnt get the license, and midway owned space invaders I think.

The pics are a cpr repro that I prepped for its last coat.
This week I prepped every pf here for spray, plus there 3 ready for hand block and polish, and 3 more ready for polish

here is crappy pics of NOS pfs some people may have never seen before.
The art on incred hulk is insane!!! I used to have a hulk lunch box. It was back when the show was on tv, . Every episode ended with this haunting beautiful piano song, and him hitch hiking to a new place.

Wow! is that an original space invaders? when I was in about 5 and 6th grades, I had no issue walking or riding my bike, over 2 miles to the party store that had Space invaders and then asteroids. I think there has only been one time in history, when coin op vid games were making so many quarters that the coins boxes filled to the top and jammed the mech.
I love quarters.
Considering that H.R. Gigers work was part of a popular movie, and sort of a style of Horror, it has by no means lost any of its artistic relevance. It still blows people from new generations away, and brings forth, so much emotion. No aspect of his work seems dated or passé.

I didnt know that they found the BG as copywrite infringement. I would think that would only be when reproducing a particular work, not style or subject. Like in music, you have to steal a chord progression, or lyrics, otherwise every metal artist would be sued by Sabbath.

I only have one book on HR Giger, so I dont know all of his work or even close. So I dont know if bally came too close to copying one of his works or sKetches(which are amazing).

I would just like to read some of the memos or hear the convos to Faris about "we didnt get the licence for alien. Can you make it Space invaders?"

#2502 1 year ago

I never got very good at Vids. I graduated in 86' so robotron, and defender, shit even asteroids I sucked at. I just didnt like them. (galaga was fun to hit the button as fast as possible)
I did like the old school shoot games from the late 60's early 70's I would find up north, in the bars. Or that old sub hunter video game. though there was no video. I think it was a screen , with slides moved across it.

#2503 1 year ago

After I run a polisher on the pf for 5 or 6 hours, I bring it in the house to thread a rag thru all of the holes to get the polish compound out of there. Then I set it in the living room to wipe down with a micro fiber and apply a coat of wax.
I noticed this complete mata hari waiting to go out to the shop to be cleaned up and wiped down, but the reflection was so perfect and undistorted, I tried to get a pic

I rolled a perfect 300 on this cpr mata hari. Christensens art is so beautiful, and I am so inspired by the clear bringing out the depth of the colors and contrasts.
Most people know I have to deal with being manic, obsessive compulsive, and nothing is better when you are on an up wave. This pf has put me in such a mood I am like a giggling 13 year old girl.
Of course when my brain chemicals are bad, this pf still wouldnt be enough to get me back to base line. Its no fun for the people (who used to be) around me.

I hit send before I wrote that the inserts all showed wood or the edge of the insert down on the tail of the arrows, so all of the arrow inserts got double coated. That was all that got painted. You cant see but I double coated the back with poly also.

#2506 1 year ago

The 3x bonus insert should have a bright light or something to draw attention to it. 55 and still love boobies!

If you ever decide to clear a cpr mata hari yourself, make sure to sand the wood grain level on the black paint. If you dont sand that perfectly flat, the clear will magnify the wood grain and the valleys between the grain. It will magnify the texture.

Wow you made short work of that game. awesome!!!
was the yes show inside or out? I am crazy for when bands play a whole album. I saw pearl jam play no code in 2014(one of my fav albums in moline. I have 2 different versions of it recorded). I wanted to see dark side of the moon so bad I actually saw a tribute band called britt floyd do it, and it could have been better than the floyd, it was pretty dam good, plus no Waters ranting about isreal

I ask about the yes show being in or out side because I just went to a blliy strings show. this is blue gress, with a little blues mixed in, but still no drums. stand up bass, fiddle, gituar and mandolin. It was so loud that every time the fiddle got up in the high range it caused me pain. it was like in a clockwork orange when they made him watch ultra violence all day. Can you imagine blue grass so loud that it causes pain?
When billy strings talked between songs, I had no idea what he said. There was a 2 sec echo that was 80% as loud as the first time. It was because of the venue and the butthole on the sound board, turning it up to 11.
I walked out at the end of the 5th song. I had great seats thru the fan club. 2 days later the show was on you tube, sound from the board before it went to the pa. It wrecked my day it sounded so beautiful. I wrote a letter to wings stadium (the venu). I used to work there and I have seen plenty of good sounding shows there. man it pissed me off. waste of 150 bucks.

I would kill to see that yes show playing "close tot he edge" but if the sound sucked, I would be suicidal.

Its snowing cats and gophers out there today, so I finished a rare Bansi run cpr repro, and i have to shoot the pics inside. not nearly the dramatic effect of outside. Anyway use you imagination, or focus on the reflection of the light bulb

I will detail the madness a bit more. I dont have a plow for the kubota L3400, but a loader. It took 2 hours to plow and shovel, and I destroyed my back. it was 12-15 in (just from last night) when I was out there. Its still blasting snow so bad I cant see the tree that is about half way to the road, so that tree is at about 400-450 ft. Going back out to do some more painting. may be a good weekend to build crates, as well as I realized that my roof trusses are sagging between an inch and almost 2 in where someone put up a beam to have a tall door. They got rid of 3 trusses and put in a beam 16 ft that just connects to the remaining trusses. So these trusses are made of 1 by material, and are 28-30 feet long. The Beam is attached with hangers at the peak of the trusses, and they didnt put any posts up to support. The trusses are just sitting on a 2x4 wall. I have been here since 05, but I just noticed the sag in the middle of the trusses, so I am going to get some steel posts of the ends of the trusses, and in the middle I am going to build one that supports under the center of the truss, and goes up to the peak of the truss and get under that beam. so that is a little over 16 ft. I am going to buy 16' 2x8's. I am sure they are going to be pricey. Lowes doesnt carry basement posts any more so I gotta find those. I am going to look if there is a habitat for humanity store in kzoo soon and see if they have some, because I am sure they are stupid expensive now days.
I was a remod/builder for 21 years, and I threw away so much materials back in the 90's that I would fight for the dumpster dive, now

#2523 1 year ago
Quoted from zerbam:

menards still sells basement posts

Ok then. I am going to put my 8 bags of 60lb sand in the back of the 2wd f250, and head to menards.
I will have to build 2 posts for the middle of the trusses because I want them to support under the middle, and then straight up from the middle is where they hung the beam (to put in a tall door so a RV can be parked in there). Its been a while since I got to over build something. Its not as much fun now with the price of materials, but it does make the process less burdensome. I would rather work on pf's

I finished a WPT yesterday, that I will try to shoot pics of today

#2525 1 year ago
Quoted from Williampinball:

Ya blowing snow is not fun a few years ago I restored a M9000 Kubota with a new loader and a 8 foot blower cab and all its over kill for where I live in town but the plan is too move out of town then I can really use it makes it easy too blow any snow out there

That my dream project: to restore a kubota from the 80's. they are the coolest tractors since the 1930's. I have been watching for about 12 years now. Everything is so far, I dont have the truck for a 800 mile trip. I did pick up a JD 850, when I went to look at a kubota. It came with a sweet snow plow system. It was parted at a hospital for 20 years to push the snow on the sidewalk. It came with a never used 72" deck, and a post hole digger, and a soft cab. I fixed it up and sold it to my neighbor across the st. By the way he never offers to let me use that sweet plow when I am out there doing it with my loader!
I learned a good plow system makes for a much cleaner job. warmer with that cab.

I almost bought a M series in 06 when I bought the L series. It was just in the 30's with a loader. I got the l3400 new with the loader and 7.5 back hoe for 23000. I have less than 350 hours on it, and its never slept outside, except a couple times when I left it on the trailer for a job the next day. Please send me a pic of your tractor or post it

That thing is a monster! I dont think I have driven one that size before, when I see it next to your van

I totally agree with frunch about the design of the kubotas. What I think is so cool is everything is 100% form follows function, but yet they still achieve a cool distinctive design. I dont have time to look for a pic right now, but the real old stuff form the 80's looks so different than anything else.
I think the era of my kubota is really tame and soft looking, but maybe if I make it another 20 it will look different compared to whats being made. I know the tractor will make it another 20.

This time of year, I fill my loader with firewood, and bring it right up to the door of all 3 buildings. I can barely handle all of the handling of firewood with the tractor. if I had to hump 20 face cords a year, I would be in amazing shape, though more likely just having natural gas run to the place.

Got some pf porn: this is a wpt that really came out nice. I have this game in my living room, and it would be wild to play with a zero friction pf. I think of all of the steve ritchie games with cleared pfs would be insane, like balls floating like on ice.

I thought I would post my recent interaction and purchase from Chad. Fantastic, simple, fast and fair.
I have followed this thread for a long time now, and when I see a completed playfield... I get all worked up about how I wish I had one.
Well now I do! I reached out to Chad, had an easy conversation, got great pics, more than once when asked, got what I thought was a fair price delivered, and received my Funhouse playfield today, safely wrapped and quickly shipped.
Thanks Chad, big thanks to Ron for your work, the FH playfield looks as good in real life as they do in the pictures here.

Great start to my day. awesome it worked out for you. I really appreciate this network of pinheads/pf people, which includes pinside. I do have a facebook acct, but I dont really post on there, but I can be found. Its fun to be part of a group that can help locate something as rare as new pfs.

I have cleared a lot of pfs for chad and he has been super supportive, so I am super happy I could help him, and who ever got one. I know steve is getting an I500 (he restores that title. he is an I500 specialist).

You have to admit it is pretty cool of chadly to offer up his pfs to anyone who needs one. Some NOS pfs are as rare as chicken teeth, or a sorority girl without HPV. Even better yet, he didnt price them at a stupid price and say take it or leave it. Its always a bummer when you want a rare pf, and when you find one its just totally unreasonable. I do know he paid a lot for what he has. I try not to be the highest price, but I only sold him a couple.

#2538 1 year ago

I have been focusing on pfs for 15 years now it seems. I can think of several pfs I had to sell that bum me out so bad. I dont make enough to afford most of the pfs that I want so bad. The way I look at it, is I try to enjoy the short time I get to have them. My rule is even if I buy it for me, I make my self list it as available, and if someone buys it, I have to sell it. Since I am so many years behind on projects, I would have all of the pfs, and no one else would have any!.

The NOS pfs that I have owned that come to mind are:
several IJ's
rocky
amazing spiderman
incredible hulk
proto TZ
Most of the sys 11 titles in diamondplate which is very cool
asteroid anne
genie
Iron maiden and viper/classic sterns
charlies angels EM (after dayhuff spent 10 years looking for one, and sold the game)
several TAFG
Anyway I finally got a pf that I have wanted since day one. It was the second game I owned, and its a licensed game that I love the license and the game. In fact in my opinion the 3 greatest games made are IJ, DEGnR, and wiz of oz. I may add godzilla if I still love it after a couple years.
So I got this nos GNR that I cleared for chad years ago, and he didnt install it. This is the first pf I have owned that I am keeping for me.
I have a JJP GnR also and I want to hang both in my office. I am bummed I sold my roached out, used GnR to someone, because it would be cool to have that on the wall again also.

The other pf title I would kill for is a pabst with dirty donny's art. I doubt that one will ever happen.

I dont have the money right now, but I will be in the market for the game soon. I have owned 3 of them. I think one of my mine is still in the detroit area. I forgot the fella's name I sold it to (chucks partner on the pin2000 boards). After april 15th.

I heat the shop and the studio with wood, and I have electric heat as a back up to keep it above 49. Same with the guest house and garage, except with a propane boiler. So I process a lot of firewood. It all comes from my land, and anyone who has a tree drop usually calls me. I will pick up wood on the side of the road.

As for this log it was obviously happy to see me, but my saw did not care for it. I live in a one light town that was settled in the 1840-50's and a oak at one of the original houses was cut down because the new owner wanted nicer lawn. I saw a team tackling the job and I had to butt in and include my self. Within 30 min I had my truck, trailer, loader and saws on the job. we counted over 150 rings on this tree, and they were goin to sell it to a sawmill but when the buyer saw big blue runs inside the trunk, they couldnt use it, because that meant there was iron somewhere in there... and I finally found it. I have been cutting up this tree for 3 years now and I still have more than half. I dont have a saw long enough to slice off a chunk. I have to rip and split to get some logs off the big 8 chunks in my yard

I have been working on this pf for so long, that I am going to start at the beginning for those of you that were not born yet when I found it.
The pf and 23 others came from a man who was the floor mgr at linc smith. He really liked his job, and he tried to save one of each of the pfs that went thru in that era starting in 91. Many of them were proto/sample pfs. I found out that some games were so straight forward they didnt really do a test run, and all that they went thru with TZ.
So this is a very special pf, and in my 15 years I havent seen one, even back in the day, when the nos stuff was a plenty. So when I posted this for sale, I was thinking, kruzman you finally hit pay dirt. they are selling IJ's for 3k, I can buy a car with this one.
This is one of those things the collector in me hates to sell, but I ran across a fella here on pinside that used to work in an arcade, and they ran a proto TZ in their location, and he ended up buying the game, years later. (That is another story in its self)
He was the he second or third person to get a hold of me knew the pf exactly. he knew all of the little differences, and could tell between proto and sample, and he even had a game with a trashed pf that was a match for this pf. I had to make sure he got the pf which he did. It was still super expensive, but I charged the same price as the other non IJ A-tier games. (I didnt get an IJ in the group. he wanted to keep that)

So my work started with gluing and clamping some lifting on the bottom edge of the back laminate from sitting on cement for 28 years. It has just a slight warp to it, so I mounted some wood blocks that it would sit in when up against the wall to keep it from warping more. I drilled and dimpled it, and sanding and prepping was so stressful. I double coated the back with poly, and I painted all of the inserts in the door, and about 70% of the rest of them. I waited a month or more in between coats. The buyer was in no hurry and needed to save money, and I finally got it done today!!!! One of the things I really like is I didnt have to re-do it, even once so it has my minimal thickness of clear (8 coats). So its doesnt look far from stock, just the finish is richer and deeper.
I am going to post a bunch of pics so sorry if it is too many, but after more than a year, this pf deserves it. I am so happy, and it is not often that I am happy that it is leaving. I couldnt have dreamed of a better home for it

Quoted from Dono:

Looks like white oak, some of the best burning wood around. It's awesome that that tree didn't go to waste.

Yep its the white oak. Burns fantastic and the bark pops off, so not to bring the bugs and dirt inside. Once they knew the trunk was not going to be used, They were cut in to 30-40 in lengths and my loader couldnt even come close to lifting them. It was all way too big to expect it to get picked up by the neighbor people for free wood, and way to big for them to handle for profitable firewood. so the job boss used his skid and dump trailer to bring 2 or 3 at a time to my house and dump them in the yard.
I hate cutting live/healthy trees. Even if it is crap wood like poplar or mulberry, I still cut and split it and use it. waste not..... I have found tree guys like to sell firewood, but even though they get it free, in fact they get paid to take it, there is so much labor involved that they only use the best, perfect sized, straight limbs. And only the good wood. SoI am always stopping at jobs to let them know that they can dump at the compound for free if it will save them time. I will gladly pay for a dump truck of big limbs.

And here is another NOS prototype. I am realizing how bad my old gun was because I am super happy with the clear lately. I didnt realize how it was splattering until I bought a new one.
This pf got drilled and dimpled also except for the last inch and half on the left side because that had been cut off the template pf so it would fit in a drop ceiling grid. basically its the side rail holes.

I forget who owns this one. I will have to dig up the records.

I am not really wanting any WPC games at this point in my life... except BSD. Man I love this dark assed game.
I got this pf blocked so flat, its just going to scream when its installed! The owned likes the worn look/effect, but I had to paint the round insert in front of the rat hole. Its such an eye draw, that I hate that big round circle from the insert below.

I just got a cpr Earth Shaker. Other than 3 triangle inserts that I didnt notice when I bought it (extra ball, 2 green lock ) that show just a sliver of edge its a super nice repro. It has a nice stock clear with no wood grain raised or the inserts haven't dropped. I cant tell if it is screened or printed. Its going up on the website when tommy gets time. So if you have any interest or questions, let me know.
I am always interested in trades!

So this is an early IPB kiss pf. It had a horrible clear on it that was so full of vapor holes, it was like pock marks every where, as well as dusties. I think it was done in a garage, by someone who had no idea what they were doing.
I started to sand it with the sander and 500 grit, but the depth of the vapor holes was all the way down to the ink. I quickly stopped using the da sander, because I own a kiss pf from this batch, and when I was trying to sand out the holes, I hit the ink several times, and caused problems, but then I hit the ink in the center of the pf and took the word scores right off the pf, thru the white and down to the wood. It happened so fast I had no idea. so I have tried a couple ways to make a sticker for the scores area, but I will have to paint the white, and to make it look right, and would have to paint a lot of it.

There is one pic of my pf. Its the one where there is a sticker on the spot where I sanded it off, just to see how it looked. I realized a sticker wont work I need someone to cut the script with one of those vinyl cricket cutting machines, and apply it after I paint the white.
So I took a beating on this pf, and I would rather sell it for 400 bucks as is to someone who is up to the challenge. CPR has not had any in stock in a long time.

So the rest of the pics are a new job that I was hand sanding, and I had to be so careful, not to get in to the ink. super stressful, so I was taking pics so I would be able to explain to the owner what happened, but because of my experience with my kiss pf, and doing it all by hand, i got the whole things sanded without any damage.
You can see on the edge of the black screens, where the thickness of the black ink makes the block miss the clear on the edge of the black. Its especially difficult in the inserts.
I work under a big LED light system and I have to look at it from all angles to find the shine, as well as the dots, from the vapor holes. Those I had to be super careful with, because there was no clear in the center of the circle. This took most of the day, and this is exactly one of the reasons I went to college. when I was a kid working at a car wash in the michigan winters, the owner used to say you better go to college so you dont have to do this shit your whole life. I do more hand sanding now after 2 degrees, than I did before any college. Its a good lie to tell kids, but I am just pissy that I believed what they told me back in the early 80's, and that was you go to college and get rich.

I cant imagine the product you get when people take a pf to a body shop, and they spray a dust coat, and then spray it. they dont sand it, and if they did they wouldnt be able to fix the issues that they caused.

When it comes to some things, there is no getting around the fact that the more hard, crappy work, you put in to it, makes it a higher quality job

Quoted from Dono:

Man Ron, that sucks. I wish I could have given you more info on the provenance of the KISS PF but I just didn't get that info when I acquired it. So glad you're making progress, albeit slower than you'd like.

Its not a prob just part of the job. If my job was the same every day, I dont know how I would do in that situation. When they are all the same I guess you work on efficiency, which sorta comes natural to me. When I get to issues like the kiss pf, or painting, I have learned to just accept that this is going to take some time. I remind myself its better than digging ditches or a real job for sure!!!!

So this is a early quicksilver repro by mirco. It needed the roll over insert's key lines painted, which means its missing a half inch hole under the apron that was missed during original production.
I couldnt fine my notes on the placement, and I asked tommy. He quickly found them here on pinside in a post Daane did right after they came out.
When I couldnt find my notes, I still prepped and started the clear process until I realized, I only have 2 more coats to go, I better do this hole.
Since I had 3/4 of the clear all ready down on the pf, I picked out one of the bits from my handy kruzman install kit, and I drew my circle. My extension cord was being used, and the extra one was in the other barn and I didnt feel like getting it. So I decided that this will be a good opportunity to experiment on how brittle the clear is and how much it lifts, ect.

I drilled a pilot hole, and no lifting or chipping at all, none. ( I dont know what size it was, but it is the drill I use to predrill the drywall screws in my crates)
Then I drilled with the 1/2 in bit. Its a high quality, sharp bit. The clear didnt chip at all.
I just need to sand and or file the edges, and the last 2 coats will take care of the edges.

I have been painting since friday. It took me 2 days to paint 90% of the inserts on this cpr totan. I painted every insert that you could see a cresent of wood from the mis alignment. Its such a beautiful, expensive game, I dont think a crappy looking pf should be installed, especially with my clear.
I havent always double coated my black key line stuff, but I have been putting them on the light table after paint, and the inside edge of the black which is painted over the insert, sometimes is not thick enough and you can partially see thru the paint when the insert is lit. It looks perfect on my bench, but like I said when I put it on the light table, the lines are not so sharp. So I am now just doubling everything.

Do you think I am off track here, and just going too far? maybe if this was a used pf, but installing this pf is a huge job, and this game cost more than my car, so Its my opinion, that is there was ever a case to do it right, this is it.

finally getting to this centaur. sorry for the delay. When stuff needs paint work, I wait until there is a bunch of it, so I can focus on it all day, rather than doing 4 different kinds of jobs in the same day which leads to mistakes for me. Here are some after pics of the inserts on the totan. (the before pics are about halfway up this page). I dont know if many others get as annoyed by the misaligned inserts as I do. It screams reproduction, and I like things to look NOS even if they are repros. This is just one coat of clear so I could put it on the light table and see how it looks.

If you have been waiting to send a pf here for clear coat, now is a good time. There are only about 15 jobs in the studio and I have 6 pfs that have the last coat down and they just need the last 2 days of work before they are complete.
Here are the pfs that are done except final sand and polish
quick silver
catacomb
a motorcycle racing pf that belongs to matt. I dont know the name of the game
Taxi
quicksilver
space invaders
champ pub
STTNG proto complete

Also its a good time to make an offer on buying one of the pfs in stock!. You can always check with me to see if I have a title in stock. Or check the website pinballplayfieldskruzman.com

There is always a hand full of pf's that havent got up on the web site yet. I also have a strange world reproduction

Lets hope for a great new year, and the end of the war in Ukraine.

Sorry I didnt make it clear. the list of games that are almost complete, are customer's pfs.
I do have over 70 new/nos/repro pfs for sale besides those.

I just got the first to Heavy winter electric bill for the studio. I am going list a pf, or a used pf, or parts that I have in the shop. I am going to try to sell them first, before asking Tommy to put them up on the web site. If they dont sell I will probably send him the pics to put up when he has the time. His son Conrad, should be off to college in about 18 years, he will have time then.

Here is a list of pfs I have, used
Fish tales
Popeye
Attack from mars
joker poker
family guy
shadow
demo man
high speed
6 mil dollar man
T2
volcano
Haunted house set
Black Hole set
Earth shaker
Incredible hulk
007 (gottlieb)
cue ball wizard
Magic
stern Iron maiden set
apollo 13
IJ
congo
BSD
Totan, almost completely restored, needs clear. I may put this in the line up to get finished.

Today we have a IPB Circus Voltare repro. I dont remember where this one came from, it been in the shop for a couple years. Its a really pretty pf, but Gene never really ironed the kinks out of CV, before his biz ended. I remember when he made these, and he only made 30 of them. They are not as sharp as the original, its not dimpled. If I remember correctly, this was a prototype of printed pfs, which is why its not a sharp as a regular screened pf. It seems like it was like 2012 when they were made. (guessing). It has the stock clearcoat. Its been in the shop a long time, and moved around so it has scuffs and what not.
I am horrible at selling anything that is not perfect, because all I list is the imperfections, but that is because I assume its perfect otherwise. So I have learned when I sell stuff on ebay, to just keep my trap closed and show plenty of pics. Since I only mention the flaws, it sounds like the thing I list is garbage. price is 475 OBO
If you want more pics or have questions send me an email. lets not negotiate or talk about it on the thread if possible.

Hopefully, this idea will fund the heat and power, and a new compressor!

I have had this populated mini pf for fish tales for years, hoping to use it. I was thinking about offering populated pfs at the time. asking $350. I have a populated IJ mini around here somewhere also. The surface has some planking though. I do remember that it needed to be restored for sure.

I dont believe I have a dimple pattern for cv, but I will check.
I believe it is less work to buy the $150 of plexi, and make a template of each side, assuming you have or can borrow another pf that is dimpled, rather than dimpling as you go. Problem is: you cant always borrow, find or buy a pf, from which to make a template.

Here is a pf that I have never had the pleasure to work on, and I love it! I dont know the fella that made this, but he gets 2 thumbs up for his art and design. The girl, the colors, the deep colored inserts. The only thing I would change is make that a pack of Lucky's in her hand. That would be extremely cool.
I included a pic of the original pf off of the IPDB. I have not seen a BG that goes with this, but if it just had the girl riding the rocket, it would be awesome! Anytime a pin up is riding or straddling something phallic... well I am a fan! If you have a pic of the BG please post it here for me.

It appears that this pf is sealed/cleared similar to the way Wade does his: A coat of lacquer or polyurethane is screened across, as the final screen. I think wade does at least 2 coats on his and that is still super thin. Its as thin as the ink used.
so I have to be super careful, when I sand these for prep, but this one has an issue I am not sure I can fix, or to what extent. Luckily, this belongs to my dear friend tommy skinner, who is easy to please. Tommy is the fella who does my website, and in return, I am his pf man. (there is a song in there somewhere)

I did an apprenticeship in a custom cabinet-makers shop 25 years ago, and this happens more often that I wish. Wood is such an unpredictable organic material. This plywood that pf makers use is cabinet wood, which means it has a super thin laminate glued on top of regular plywood. If you think about how they make laminate, you will understand why it happens. I sell my walnut trees to a mill that makes laminate, and they put the log on a lathe, spin it and get the gum wood off, that is the white wood around the outside (where most of the water goes up the tree), and then slice sheets as big as they can that are the thickness of construction paper. Its a beautiful procedure, and the operation I saw was an unbelievably expensive, super sharp, super thin, long blade, and it peals off the outside like a potato. They keep the sheets in order because when we made expensive cabinets we needed the wood grain to match if there is a seem, or even if not a seam. I never really thought about it, but if the mill making the plywood and applying the laminate had an acct with a pinball manufacture, it would be a great way so sell the sections that dont match or the grain runs a funny way, since its going to get inked. Either way pf makers pay a lot for the wood. I havent been told the price since before covid, so no idea how much now.
One of my jobs at the cabinet shop was to glue down laminate sheets that were chosen, which was a neat job. The the glue smell was harsh for even me.

So what we are dealing with on this pf is the laminate has split up. When they cut laminate i think they did it when it was still very wet so that it was pliable. sometimes it gets glued down and then dries, or gets moved to a dryer environment, and when wood dries, it cracks and splits. Even though the whole underside is covered in glue and stuck to the pf. I think the sheets that were made on the outside of the log, were more prone to this. I have forgotten so much from that experience I shouldnt be trying to explain it. Its an organic material. It was alive, and dynamic, it moves, changes, reacts.

It was common that a couple months after installation, we would get a door returned with cracked laminate. If you imagine it is just stained the cracks can range from looking "organic", to a split that you can put your finger nail in. many people griped when it was just a slight issue of appearance, but we often got people complaining if the doors didnt all match perfect in tone as well as grain (which is impossible).

The first thing that comes to mind for repair is sand it smooth. Problem is the laminate is so thin that you can either make the crack wider, or easily sand right thru it. On this pf the laminate cracks are on a dark color so they really show. If it were a light color it wouldnt. so rather than block sanding this flat as I normally do I have to sand it with non blocked sandpaper. I will build up the clear to level out the surface, but down under the clear the cracks will still be there. I am interested to see how well or much they show. If they were cracks that were open, I can make it disappear easier than puckered like these. If I sand thru and hit ink I am going to be in big trouble, because the back ground on this is huge, and there are no natural borders to it from key lines or other color edges (for repaint of that area).

So it will be a challenge, and thats what I do for a living, fix up pfs. Not roll doobies.

I was just reminded the problem with selling projects, or used pfs or anything that is not absolutely perfect. Someone contacted me about the nos DE simpsons pf that I lost interest in a couple years ago. it was about half way done. I drilled and dimpled, sanded and sealed the back prepped, did more than half of the paint work and locked it down with a coat, and then sanded it level so the paint could be finished and be cleared.
So a month later I get a letter that says your paint looks bad when you put light behind it, and it is not even, and its going to cost 500 to get finished.

here is the first letter I write. one of 20 some explaining that the job is not done.

Hello. The de simpsons is indefinitely on hold. I get about 2 emails on it every single day. It blows my mind.
I dont do restorations any more because I havent figured out how to make more than 7 bucks an hour. I did it full time for 5 years before it bankrupted me.

So anyway , I clear pfs, both repros and NOS, and I perfect them first. Like most nos pfs have cracks around the inserts, or other things that should be fixed before clearing.

I have been clearing pfs 6 and 7 days a week for several years, and I just dont have the time to put in to the simpsons. it is for sale as it is for 1300. I have drilled and dimpled it, done most of the paint work, locked it down with a thin coat of clear, and sanded it. so its ready for yellow, and black. most of the other colors are done.
Thanks and have a good day, ron kruzman

Not only do I not want someone to be unhappy with something they bought from me, but I realize now that this person is going to look for help and write everyone to say I bought this from kruzman and look how bad it is, not mentioning that I explained that its a project and not complete. I said the paint needs to be finished and it needs clear before it can be installed. I thought the person was going to finish the work, install it and be happy. Maybe go buy some paint and a brush, and figure it out. it just takes time. LOTS OF TIME.

if its 500 to finish the paint and clear it, thats a steal. But we all know that pinball is a hands off, easy, inexpensive, not labor intensive hobby.

So now I have to rethink selling some projects in the shop to help with the bills and compressor. everything has to be idiot proofed before shipped. I suppose I have to install it also.

Just venting. frustrated. I need a wife or room mate

Unfortunately it appears there is no matching backglass, but it does look nice populated. https://www.beehivepinball.com/

Love it. sounds like a low dough project. Has anyone seen a stars game sell lately? How much do they sell for.
I went on a pf buying tirade this month and a TOTAN gold and a SS just got delivered yesterday. as soon as I sell 2 and pay my creditors, I am going to see about buying one of these pfs. I really dig um, and it looks great installed. Maybe someone will sell a game all ready converted sometime this year. people get tired of titles, and only have so much room or money.

The other idea I have been kicking around for years is I have a nos stingray pf set aside...

Here is a taxi I finished for a customer. It was a bit of a trouble maker. When it first got here I sanded it down, nice and flat, and when I went to clear it 10-14 days later, I could feel it wasnt flat any more. The wood was still curing. Now that the pf makers can make the pfs "Just in Time" , rather than carry an inventory, I cant tell how old they are. Many times when I would clear them and they were fresh new, I would do my regular thing, and after the final coat, block sand it flat, and 2 months later, the inserts raise a little. super frustrating. So I let this one set for like 3 months, by then, it didnt seem to be moving any more, before I got started.
Then this week it gave me some lip. I was polishing it out, and when I got to the finest polish I could see some little issues in the clear, i didnt see before. Its because of the light colors, even when i use my big magnifying glass, since the surface is sanded a matte finish. you cant see the little miniscule stuff.
Its funny looking I bet, because when I am done block sanding the first grit, I use a big sherloc holmes magnifying glass and one of those lights on an arm that I can move all over. Of course I broke the glass, and now I use a chunk of it, until someday I replace it. The chunk is about 5 in, so its still functionable.

Well thats the excitement of "the trouble making taxi" pf. Evidently, taxi is the owner's wife's favorite game, and she is just as excited for this as he is. which is very cool. If you have ever thought about getting a taxi, you should know it was designed by the same man who did IJ (one of the best games ever made)], Mark Ritchie.

Today is the worst day for pics. its very dark, and pouring rain/freezing rain

I don't quite remember, but on the original pfs, is zombie santa so weird looking?
Also every time I do this title, I discover the run over cat, which at first is kinda funny that it is there, but it always reminds me of my cat Puff, who got run over in my driveway by the meter reader. he stopped, and looked at her, got back in the car and drove off. I was in the kitchen, looking out the window wondering what the hell he is doing.
I called the power company furious, and they told me the meter readers are contractors, so they have nothing to do with it. They wouldnt tell me the name of the driver or his boss or the company he worked for. I really wanted to find him, and where he lives, and drive Doug, my F250, over to his place to run some shit over.

I did a bunch of prepping yesterday, and I am going to finish the line up today. Its funny, some days I just do not want to sand, and there are days ;like today, where I am in the mood to rock em out.

I have done a bunch of nos pf's that have the invisible number across the center, and I had forgotten if I can sand that out. I can. This BSD had it. Also on this bsd, which is nice NOS, the holes for the pop bumpers were not drilled. for some reason a lot of nos pfs are drilled and dimpled, mylared, but not the pop bumpers, and often not the side rails. I have always wondered about that. TAF is a perfect example with those 5 pops. none are drilled. They have the 3 big holes, but not the holes for the lug nail/screws or the 2 wire holes. Lucky I had a template for bsd and I added them. I dont counter sink them because with my clear, and the install kit, you cant counter sink them by removing the clear.

This is a ghost busters and its super common for the holes to have wood burrs. prob from the bit on the cnc machine getting dull, any way, they are perfect for grabbing clear and growing, so I try to watch for them and take care of them. Its another perfect use for the kruzman pf install kit.

There was some pretty harsh scratches at the bottom of this pf, from being stacked with another pf that had those flipper adjustment rolls, or pins. Its really important to take those out for storage, because they just stick out enough and they are sharp enough to really damage another pf. I got about 90% of the scratches out, but I cant sand any deeper. I will apply a thin coat, and see what is left.

some more prep work. I always like to clean up the arrow inserts on centaur, plus this one had cracks around the inserts for the in line dropps, and one bonus insert. Simpsons is a lot of prep work to do between every coat.
all that is left is Totan, and the upper pf for solar fire. I havent started the prep work on lady luck and pinbot yet, but I will once I get these sprayed.
I am doing the final block sand on matts motorcycle pf, and champ pub.
There are a couple pfs that are done with spraying and just waiting for the last coat to cure so I can do the final 2 days work. off hand they are
catacomb
quick silver
space invaders
seems like there are 2 more, but I havent been out there yet.

So its pretty slow here if any one wants to send any work, let me know

Getting 2 cats in one pic is not easy. It seems to me that max and ruben really like it here. Its winter and they mostly sleep and I dont blame them, but I am beginning to get them to come on walks with me.
I traded a couple huge walnut trees to get the tree man to cut down the 2 beautiful trees shading the empty guest house. They were 60 footers and only 12 feet from the building, and so many hardwoods are breaking half way up in these storms.
Anyway there are going to be some huge fires. I have 6 piles like this, scattered all over the compound

This would be super cool for the music games, like my sisters acdc.

I finished up this nos champion pub over the holiday weekend. I absolutely dig this game. I hadnt played until 2005. It was on route in a pool hall in kalamazoo when I was getting sober (the last time). I would treat myself to a roll of quarters on a fri or sat, and I usually left a lot of credits in it.

With this nos, I couldnt find a populated pf to make a dimple pattern from, and I looked for months. I have noticed in the 15 years i have been doing this, what the time does to these nos pfs. 15 years ago, when they came in they were always flawless. Now with the seasons change, and the movement of the wood every year, the insert paint is cracking along the edges.

Its really easy to destroy this pf if you are clumsy. If you set it down hard upside down on that "finger" of wood, you can say good buy to it. I have never done it but I have seen 2 broken. So when I run the 13 amp/ 4500 rpm polisher over it, I make a block to hold it together

After I am done polishing, I clean out all of the holes' edges, and then apply a last coat of wax. The last pic is that last coat getting polished off

Robt. Wms.! I have that book, and was at that show! I got to meet the man (and his wife) and he autographed my book.
I would love a Robt. Wms. themed PF. His style does indeed lend itself well to the pinball idiom.
You do beautiful work, btw.

Oh think about a Robert Williams pin. He has done so many masterpieces that have so many parts of the painting that could be used. You are the first person to reply to me about him. He is one of my most fav artists that are still alive or he was. I will have to check, but I am pretty sure one of his paintings had pinball in it. He is so in the the late 50's era of americana.
I actually used to make enough to buy one of his small paintings, but them days are long gone!!!!! At least I get medicaid now though it can get jerked any time the political winds change as they are.

I was doing some prep work, but the rain started again. there has been 3 days this jan, so far that it didnt rain here. I want to bring in firewood, but even though its covered its all too wet.

I have to get a hold of this pinbot owner and ask him if he wants me to repaint these inserts that are not lined up correctly.
This is one of those pfs where the wood grain really came up after the wood finally cured to its final moisture content. This wood grain is not the makers fault. Its just wood. every single plank is different and acts different. The last couple mirco pfs to come in are warped enough that it worries me a bit.

I have 3 jobs in the studio that have to be fully hand sanded flat. 2 are proto Bally williams, and they are priceless, the other is that stars, which at least has a super thin layer of clear from screening. It takes a couple of hours to hand sand a pf. First you have to block it, then go back and sand all of the low spots in the inserts. sucks.

On this lady luck, it had what I thought was a regular, thin lacquer coat. So I used a worn piece of 600 grit on the da sander, and the second I hit the pf with it, I went right thru the paint on the side of an insert. When I sand a pf regularly, I first sand all of the inserts, because they have a high spot around them, and a low spot on the inside edge of their key line.
So I have to fix the one insert I wrecked, but I need to talk to the owner to see if he wants me to paint all of the cracked inserts. Also this pf is now old enough, that expoy-ing the back side of the inserts may be a good idea. none are loose yet, but that glue starts failing after 30 years. If they loosen after I clear, we will get ghosting. Before I started locking them in with the epoxy some of the old pfs I did like kiss got some ghosting on inserts after some years. The wood is constantly moving, especially with the seasons.

Quoted from Coyote:

Wht's the main cause for warpage? Humidity? Storing it wrong? Or just the wood used?
Also wow, that ink on the text is really, really blown out. Huh.

Fixing the print on the inserts would cost a fortune. I am proposing making the inside edge of the black key line a size smaller, to cover the cresent from the alignment issue.

as for warping gravity, change of temp and humidity, and cureing/drying to its final stage are the causes of warping. The warping that wtists the pf is my greatest concern because I cant fix it with gravity and weight. as I have described before when plywood twists, it is because one of the opposing forces of the plywood is weak. Either a big split in the wood, or often there will be some wood used that is partially bark, and has no lateral strength.

If you look at any board stock like a 2x4 or 2x10 whatever, it is crowned. or I like to call it smiles. every single board is curved. The good wood not much. A good carpenter always considers the crown of his wood as he/she places it. When I make my beam to hold up the roof soon, I will screw together 2x8 and I will make their crowns oppose each other. I will also put a peice of plywood in-between them.

So plywood is made so we can have "flat wood". each layer of the plywood has its direction, and the next layer is set in the opposite direction. The more layers you have the less quality wood you can use, because its thinner pieces, and having more of them makes the strength of one bad one not much. So a twist happens as the wood is doing its final cure.
Almost always there is not a problem because they design the pf to be held, dealing with plywood warping, but also because of the weight of the parts attached to the pf, easily push it flat.
Its scares me because if I clear it when it is really bent, and then it gets straightened in the game, there is always going to be stress on that clear.

Lately mirco pfs have been arriving warped. I think its because of how they are packed, as well as the change in temp and humidity during the travel so far. Its always more dramatic in the winter. right now in michigan, its been cold and wet for 3 weeks, then we have artificial heat that goes up and down.

So much for my coffee break, I didnt realize I was going to write a book, but a lot of people freak out about it. I do. Except for twisting, its almost always fixed by me rotating how they lean.

I have to clarify my statements, because people think I have a problem with cpr. I love cpr and I am so glad they are a part of the pinball community. I love ford trucks, and every time I work on mine, I bitch about some aspect of it. Maybe I was just brought up like that. I realize I do tend to talk crap about whatever I have to work on. I dont think I have ever said out loud that the oil drain plug on a car was torqued to the perfect spec. It seems I dont say anything, but when some idiot HORQUED it on there so tight that I need a cheater bar... my mouth is running.
I just forget that when I say something here, a lot of people who dont know me or know about my tendency's can get bummed.
Heck I would too, so I will be a little more conscious of the criticism.

Its so hard for me to keep the jobs staggered. They seem to group together, even if i try not to.
I forget the title of this one, but its pretty cool, and from the pf, it looks like a really fun game. its huge which works great for a game about racing around a GP track. Compare to no fear (which is one of my fav games of the era) where you are shooting slightly straight ahead for 6 lanes all next to each other. I haven't played this game, I am just going on how its set up. maybe its not that good since I dont know anyone with one?

If you ha ve a job here and you are waiting, there are 5 that are done being sprayed and need to be blocked and polished. I hope to polish catacomb today. Space invaders was done, but I dont like the last coat, so I am going to sand it and do another. Sorry if thats your pf.

Ron, you are an amazing artist and craftsman. I hope everyone out there in pin-land recognize the outstanding service you provide and your drive for molding your product offerings at the best quality possible. Love this thread, and at least for me personally enjoy your mellow rants. I've learned a lot from them, so don't stop now!

Thank you. I am glad to hear I dont drive people nuts with the wording of my struggles. I thought I was a loner, but I realize I am not at all, I just didnt like the people I was surrounded with. so living alone out on the country is tough for me. I started this thread to be an open convo about pfs. So I love it when people chime in, and it blows me away that we have folks from all around the world. If I was the young traveler I used to be, I would take advantage of it.
Also pics and hearing about installing the pfs also puts wind in my sails!!

#2646 1 year ago

Awesome pics. Its been a while since I played dr who, I forgot how much is on the top side. You have to be so light handed when installing stuff like ramps and then 1 or 2 levels of plastics.
One of the many cool things about when you do a restore is you can use the proper screws and nuts. Its seems like you dont realize it until you have to take it apart, but then you get to put it together the right way. If it was on route they will use anything including scotch tape.
I have seen many many pfs with damage to the top side of the pf from using the wrong screws on the underside. It would be a super easy mistake to make if I hadn't seen so much of it.
I have a friend in town, mike schudel, who has a rivet press and the dies and all of that stuff, if you get a ramp set that is only the plastic. Some games like the first elviria require so many rivets in the plastic set.

The work on the dr who looks so good. I think its operators that throw away the grey covers for the micro switches on the ramps. I owned several dmd games before I ever saw one of those. They are always missing!

Looks like you added some extra spot lights in the lower half of the pf? It is dark down by the flippers, plus the black paint. I like a lot of light around the flipper area. That game looks just amazing. Way better than just new. A game that is much better and nicer than it was the day it was made. Great work!!

Quoted from guitarded:

Tell me about it!
Finally doing my EatPM swap, right now. So many holes to prep and drill, today.

Yes that plastic and ramp set was a mess of rivets. Glad you are installing your pf!!

Daane, that stones looks amazing!!Dam

#2652 1 year ago

OHHH that looks so nice!!! I just got a proto WCS in here.
I bought a populated WCS pf like 14 years ago, and restored the pf and sold it later. It was like my 3rd resto. I hadnt learned how to fix worn ball holes. Hadnt figured out the best material and process. After the job was done and it was getting installed, it popped off like a capped tooth. I had used bondo. Live and learn.
I held on to those parts just until a guy bought all of my parts last year or possibly 2 years ago n(all for one price). I figured that goal assembly and motor would be valuable, but no one ever needed it.
I have never played soccer in my life but I really like this game as well as the art, and of course those soccer shorts!!! Classy and still a shout out to the pervs!!

#2653 1 year ago

I think its been at least 6 or 7 years since I have seen a catacomb game come up for sale/. Anything with backbox animation is a collectable, but its a great game also!! I have always been in to the classic sterns and sys 80's.

Anyway I finished another job today. I am very happy with it. I have 4 other pf's that are ready to start block sanding, but I examined them and I dont like the final coat on 2 of them. One is the simpsons, which is the sister game to this (same owner). So I am going to sand down the final coat on the 2 I dont like and recoat them hopefully this week and prey I get a better coat. the other is space invaders. Sorry a little more time, but in for a penny in for a pound. You have waited this long, let me get it perfect.

When you see a catacomb in person with good lights and a new pf, its just beautiful. I really like that it is heavyin these really cool shades of green, which makes the use of just a splash of another color like blue, red or white stant right out!!
My buddy todd carter had a beauty, and I dont know if he kept it or sold it over the years. I would tell him the same thing I tell dayhuff/chris/tommy, and big paul and the rest of my friends: I got plenty of room over here for free pinball storage. Free climate controlled storage... That's a deal!

I saw this in the classifieds. this pf has nothing to do with me. Not my work, not my pf. I actually dont know what a hard top is?

I want to mention that Mike who owns GAP pinball in chicago is looking for a cpr bally rolling stones. I mentioned to him several times I have a nos, but he is looking for cpr, and they are sold out at cpr right now. If you dont know how to get a hold of him, I can help

I just unboxed this, and its so beautiful, I have to post a pic. It is nos and was cleared by me 4-5 years ago. Its for sale. I havent priced it yet, but I will entertain offers if I can sell it fast. I love this title, but I will never own or afford this game.
I have 2 more to open that I got from chad. (mentioned a page or 2 back)

I am trying to think of the rarest NOS pfs I have owned (not what has gone thru here) while I eat lunch.
I had several gottlieb sys 80 pfs from harry williams collection rocky/cubs/amazing spiderman/Qbert
The proto TZ and WCS. I have owned 2 proto's of STTNG
2 taf golds
The speakeasy made of resin, I have is pretty rare.
DE playboy
Hit the deck
DE guns and roses (still have)
DE royal rumble
classic stern viper
pharoah
Strange science and black water100
Charlies angels EM version

These are not the most expensive, but they are the pfs I have never seen before. I have never seen or owned a NOS superman.

#2679 1 year ago

That Devils dare is beautiful. IF you ever sell, please let me know. I think when I am dead, people will say 'He sure loved sys 80"

Here are some pics of the resin speakeasy. I am sold on this idea. I have owned it for 10 years, its bounced around the compound with no protection, and its still looks waxed, and NO WARP. I have seen kiss pfs that were made of this stuff. I think it was smart of bally to experiment with this idea. Wood is a volatile commodity, with quality that moves unpredictably.
I have never owned one of these installed in a game, but I dont know if the statement about parts falling off is true. Its sounds like one of those statements like "If you piss on the wheel of a ford it wont start".
But I have never owned one.
I would like to see how they wear. Its a matter of how well the ink is bonded to the board I guess

The pics make the inserts look sunk, as well as it looks like wood grain. It has marks that are from the belt sander, which look like the wood grain. The pf is as smooth as a brand new stern.

Quoted from slochar:

Ask BigAl56 how it worked out he probably knows. The issue is that the material crumbles/strips and you can't get the screws to stay tight. They did stay vibrant and stable though, if the other issue had worked out it would have become the PF material of choice.

Its actually surprising that I have never owned a game that had one. I have never owned kiss because it sucks to play, and lets face it kiss music is so bad. No band used sex innuendo till blue in the face like kiss. I was born in 68 so I lived thru it, but even in 6th grade those lyrics were a bummer. I saw them for the animalize tour at cobo, and I think it was one of the few tours that had no make up or pyros or anything. I remember that several days after the show, I could see KISS when I closed my eyes. I think it was burned in to the back of my eyes. It was a horrible show, and to make it worse, my 5.0 was stolen from the parking structure during the show.

I have never owned speakeasy only because I was never in the right place and time. I have always liked it for sure. I like all of the gambling pins it seems.

I will ask dayhuff, I think he has owned more than one of these pfs. What you say sounds logical. If they mass used them, hopefully they would put out a repair kit to use when stripping out a hole.

Way back in the day, I remember a conversation about the german kiss pfs being the resin. We all know the german kiss pf story correct?

Germany came up with a law back in the peak of kiss' career that the music was so bad, their music was not allowed in the country.

#2683 1 year ago

Ok I was kidding.
Bally had to change the kiss logo to use soft SS so that it did not remind those folks of their behavior during the 1932-45.
I actually had a NOS german pf. thats pretty rare also. Back when I first started collecting pfs, kiss pfs were everywhere. You could buy them on ebay for like 250 nos. All of the kiss fans that didnt play pinball had to have one, as well as a BG. Now they have all finally dried up.

I just made it a rule in the last 2 years that the t nuts on the obverse have to be removed when I clear a pf. Its half ass and junky to have them all covered in clear, plus it may clog the threads (even though I did it for years before this).
So I removed them on this congo, which is not always easy.
This congo got a twist warp that I couldnt get any result at all from reversing, and using weight and pressure to get it to bend back straight. I even screwed blocks to the floor so they wont move away from the wall and leaned a shipping crate against the bend. Nothing.
So its one of those days. We are getting a big snow storm, so I cant sand or open the doors at all, so I am limited to what I can do, while I wait for the spray room to get warm.

I got a piece of oak, and rip sawed it, to get more length and make some rails for this pf. I installed 6 t nuts, went to the hardware store and got some screws long enough, and was successful in straightening this out. This is the worst example I have dealt with. The bend is in the top 1/3 of the pf. I expect to leave the blocks attached thru the process and till I am done. I will suggest to the owner to leave them as is, until ready to install.
its always something.

I just thought of this today when a guy asked if I give a receipt. Since now I shoot pics of every job that gets done, this is source for proof that your pf was indeed done by me. I think its called prominence? (Documentation of where its been) I know its going to be in a position I didnt want to be found in, like on the toilet, but I am going to die some day. I told the girl at the gas station where I get smokes and a DC every day at noon that if I dont show up for a week, send a cop and a cadaver dog. Sometimes when I am out on the back acre's chopping firewood, I will realize I dont have my phone with me. If you just touch your thigh lightly with a chain saw, accidently, I would think you get about 15-20 secs to turnict, assuming I didnt cut off one of my hands. I have been figuring it may happen some day.
I have noticed that the combo of living alone so long and being single so long, that any convo eventually leads to my death.

#2693 1 year ago

Provenance.
I remember the first time I heard that word. I bought a painting from a woman, and she gave me a folder with the painting that had, basically her and its resume. Come to find out the painting had been in several shows, and it was in the arts and leisure section of a newspaper.
Of course the info is somewhere in one of the closets, and if I die, the painting goes to good will. Until a couple years later on antique roadshow someone brags that they got it for 10 bucks...
Maybe I will find the folder and tape it on the back of the painting. I will put it on a very long to do list.

Quoted from Beatnik-Filmstar:

In peripheral Ron news - the IFPA state championship tournaments were held this past weekend. In the course of getting wrecked by a former state champ 4 straight in the first round I lost one of my games on a Quicksilver who's playfield has passed through Ron's shop. Score not withstanding - the game is a thing of absolute beauty.

Very cool! Did it play well? Fast? Did people complain because its not like an uncleared pf? I was a volunteer score keeper at the tourneys at expo for several years. Those guys get PISSED when they loose.
I know what it is like to get my ass handed to me. Luckily I am not competitive at all.

#2700 1 year ago

I would like to get in a group where we meet at different host's house. Even though I could care less about the score, I need the socialization. I dont think we have any groups around my area. I know one well has a tournament which I guess would be better than nothing.

I realize the prizes are a lot of money, but I never drove home from chicago after keeping score, thinking "Those guys had a lot of fun"
The guys who win, are the ones that win every tournament, and the guys who came close are pissed. The game set up complaints were one thing, but the screaming and jumping up and down. Its worse that when Its my turn at the pool table to try to take the table and the guy I am playing is swinging around his stick like a martial arts sward or tom cruise or some jerk off shit like that. Oh I hate loosing to those guys! I also noticed that some guys where really rough on the games. Those games are owned by someone who DONATED it to be used.
My experience was often ugly.
But I am the type that is constantly studying human behavior. So most prob dont see or notice it.

I am not saying every one acts like this, but if you have never seen it before, its a bit uncomfortable.

Do they have tournaments where the pros are in their own group, and there is a group for regular schmuks? They must, but I bet the pros purse is bigger than the regular.

The smart guys get their kids in to it. There is a kid in mich, well he isnt a kid any more. His dad was an amazing player, and the son became really good. especially when he was in the year or 2 before the cut off age. (I think it was 13). This kid won machines, and lots o money because the competition was really slim. I havent talked to him since covid, but last time I saw him he was driving a vette and was becoming a straight up hustler. I love it.

Quoted from Aurich:

That's how the old Orange County league worked. We rotated hosts. It was hard though, because we had so many members you really needed a minimum of 14 games to accommodate things, and people expect them to be all tuned up etc. So it's a bit to ask of folks.
I'm playing in a more casual league now that's at a local car club and social lounge run by a Pinsider. I'm not a member but was invited to add a little more pinball experience and run a team. Wide range of player skills, and very chill. Nobody is stressed about if they lose, not really. But the competition factor is still nice, it encourages people to get better. One of my players has been practicing and it shows. I like that aspect.
I've been hosting my own arcade weekly for the last 5 years, not pinball focused, and the social aspect is really important to me. Why not invite a few locals over for a night? Only takes a few people to turn it into a evening. Pinball is easier in some ways than what I do, because I run a night for fighting games. It's very one on one, and can feel more stressful for beginners. With pinball even if you're competing it's just taking turns against the machine. Less personal feeling.

Thats a pretty good idea, having once a week or month or whatever, where people can come over and play. leads to a good, laid back situation.

One of the funniest nights I have had, was dollar games, where everyone throws in a buck (well between 1-4, unless playing 6mdm which would be 6). Since gambling is so similar to dope, I dont gamble, except I will bet a dollar on anything. Long as I can only bet a buck. Its been like 18 years since I had a problem with gambling, but when you win it hits the same receptors. So my dollar rule is my attempt at moderation and it works. In my mind its 100 each!

I wanted to mention for a friend/customer that philip baliey in texas has a TAF pf that I cleared for chad some years ago. He has a couple taf pfs, and we cant tell if this one is nos or repro. Anyway he is looking to sell it.
I forget his handle on pinside. I am old.

#2712 1 year ago

I can usually tell. I am leaning nos, but no dates, and the side says churchhill. I may be able to tell if I had it in person, but from memory, and pics I cant tell. Back when chad was on a pf buying bender, I am not sure if he knew the difference either.

#2718 1 year ago

Dimples dont look mirco.
no listed maker like ls or sp.
NO idea from the pics.
colors look right (without having a comparison) doesnt look anything like a cpr

#2719 1 year ago

I get creamy for chrome coin doors

#2733 1 year ago

I can add 2 things. Its not cpr (colors) and its not TAFG (colors)
TAF was made over several years, and I know they did more than one run of 1 days production for shows and movie events. Same with other titles like T2. Or it may be a repro, maybe an early mirco. I dont remember when he started making them and what they looked like. I think the issue becomes moot when no one can tell the difference. If I needed one I would lean in to its a repro and buy it. Although what did I just say? "if I needed one"?
I have 76 new and nos pfs and about 50 more in the studio. The credit card interest on the pfs I bought since fall is over 4 grand a year!
ok I will buy it.
Kidding, I all ready have one pf coming from the owner of that TAF.
For my business not personal, my rule is it is doesnt have production dates, its not nos, because thats the only way I can be confident that it is, when I sell it as nos. I just thought of the person who have the pf with a hardtop listed as nos. urgh!

But if it was for my game, I wouldnt be bothered by the ambiguity if I like it, and the price is right.

I am ready to pull my hair out. I got 15 emails from someone who wanted a spiderman nos pf. he wanted to make sure it was new. he wanted to make sure its was not cleared, but it has a clear. he said he will take it several times. he sent me his address, I sent him mine and the total. I had to explain over several emails that it dosent matter if you send a check or a post office money order. I had to explain what a post office money order is. then he asked if he could send a money order from his bank? fine. again, he will take it. I make out a shipping tag. he didnt send his phone number, I ask and he sends it. Then he writes can he send pay pal he will send an extra 10$, and is it used? before I answer he writes forget it, sorry to waste your time.
I dont have much hair left to be pulling out. 55 years old and an advance degree and this is what I do for a living. I am as dumb as him.

Well that puts some wind in my sail!! Looks amazing and looks like sooo much work. You have to be so careful assembling so many plastic parts, that are all connected to each other, in an order. That is a classy game to restore.
EATPM was my expensive lesson learned about stripping a pf, restoring it, then putting it back together many months later. I ended up selling as a basket case to a fella who had it together in short time. its been about 8-10 years since I had them and I dont remember which I like more. They are 2 different styles for sure. It seems like the sys 11 is much more complicated. Her call outs are the best, although the stern playboy woman may be better!
Thats probably going to make some people react, but most of them have not played the stern playboy. I owned it for about 10 years, and had never played it. Once it was shopped and running its different than any other game, and the woman's voice is perfect.

Do you think you would ever sell this EATPM? or can you say absolutely never. (even though we realize the word never is just hot air. You can never say never and it mean never)

After 4 Swaps, I can say that installing a PF without your Install Kit is NOT the way to go. Those bits make drilling clearcoat a LOT less sketchy.
I use them both by hand and in my drill (rather than the Dremmel), as the drill has a tighter tolerance and no threat of skipping/hopping.

Great idea, I have them skip around quite often!!
My clearcoar for sure. I dont know about now that he drills after the clear, but the mircos before that my kit is essential also.

I helped install a cpr ES without my clear, and we were not using the dremmil bits, but every pre drill was causing a 2mm halo of lift. the glue kit both got rid of the halo and locked it down. It was fasted to go at it that way..

some folks just wont listen though.

I went on a road trip this morning and picked up another pink panther. its so cool how big these sys 80 games are.
1152 sq inches when a medusa pf has 840. I picked medusa because it was about the same time.
Also checked out a dudes sweet ramcharger.

In michigan, when I was a young man, every DNR and game warden, or state park employee, or county sheriff drove these. Dodge had a great contract with the gov it seemed like. This was the 4WD answer to the Crown Vic. which was what every-single cop and cabby drove (after checker went under in like 82ish. I didnt know until I moved here, but pre 1980 every Gibson Guitar and checker cab was built in kalamazoo mi.

Mr Guitarded shared a fantastic idea for using the kruzman pf install kit more efficiently.
When my special glue is loaded in the hypo, its much thinner than water, and a couple bad things can happen. It can drip, or the eye will get a little clogged from debris causing it to split or shoot off to the side, like a post-sex urine stream. (we are all adults here)
So he suggested keeping a piece of cardboard on the pf where you are working like a 15 inch "drop cloth" and the other part is, he uses card stock and uses a hole punch to put a hole in the center. He puts this over the hole or area he is going to drip the clear. Rather than just working over open pf. Its sounds so logical, but I never thought of it!

The install kits really help keep the heat and lights on in the winter in the studio.
It cost 100 shipped and comes with 12-15 different diamond bits specially picked out by me, and a stone to clean them when they get clogged up with a clear.
A inexpensive tool for measuring the diameter of screws and drill bits so you can know the size of the screw and use the drill bit that is one size smaller. Plus a glue kit which is an ounce of thinned out super glue, and 6 hypo needles to get the glue where you need it.

If you only used it to remove the clear out of the t nut holes and the pop bumper lug countersinks, you got your money's worth. Its so frustrating getting t nuts thru a bunch of clearcoat, and you have to get the heads of the pop bumper lugs to sit flush with the surface of the clear. Plus if you have the lugs with the jagged collar you want to measure those 2 diameters for pre drill. (the inexpensive measuring tool)

I just got a good question from someone who is going to populate a stock repro pf and is going to use the kit. Dave macy and others have done more swapps than me, but he asked if he has to remove the clear around post holes that have a t nut under them.
I say yes, ream the clear off the edges of the hole so that next year when you pull out that post on some repair or wax, and its a humid day and the threads catch the lip of clear and lifts it up. screw that. use the football or round head. to get the clear off the edges of the hole.

On the production cleares, the spray hardly makes it down the shaft of the post hole at all.. BUT there is often a lip of clear around it that is a smaller diameter than the hole its self, because clear grabs edges and builds

Quoted from dmacy:

I like using the transfer pipette and they hold Ron's Juice for weeks. I have a ton of them, so that's why I use them.

I bought a bunch of those pipettes for when I use a thicker mix of glue, but I can never get a trustable seal between the bottle top and the pipette.

So the vaseline trick is an old junkie trick. they put the plunger in their ear for a little ear wax. Some states make it illegal to buy hypodermics without a prescription. This is not going to stop someone who has all ready made the decision to inject them self with street drugs. It only makes the community pay for the hospitalization of people without insurance when they get hepatitis or aids (both very expensive diseases)

Vaseline is a little less gross.

Of course I acknowledge the horrible physical pain involved with the diseases I mentioned. I have learned thru the years the best way to get people to care about other people, that they usually will not, is thru their pocket book.

Love this playfield. Not sure if it’s nostalgia or the color palette … just love it. A big beautiful work of art.

I also like the deep color of the inserts. When you highlight them with good LED's they are like gems.

I like to see mylar pads where balls get dropped on the pf.
For known high wear areas like on a DE GnR axl hole, I used to get this great "removable mylar is what I called it" It was an office supplies product and about 2/3 the thickness of pinball mylar. You could custom make protectors and since it wasnt super glossy, it was very very hard to notice installed.
I hate condoms and I hate mylar. Both are good at their job, but I still hate them.
What I loved about the stuff I used to use, was after 2 years when you are ready to do a serious pf clean, you could pull it off with no adhesive sticking to the pf, and make a new one after cleaning the pf.

The key to really making it "invisible" was keeping in mind your edges. thats the only place that will cause it to be noticed, either from change of sheen or dirt around the edge. so I pull off the plastics and make my edges go under plastics where I could. Otherwise I cut so the edges sat on a key line. Since cause the eye to accept the break or change, the mylar edge, which is very minimal went unnoticed.
I am not talking about regular mylar here but the stuff I used to use and sell, but I couldnt find it any more. I havent looked in a couple years. if you think I should try to carry this again, let me know. I think I sold it for 5 bucks for 3 sheets. Its was cheap enough that the shipping was more than the product, so great to throw in with a pf.

#2778 1 year ago

So I am baby sitting my sisters ac/dc, and I bought it new when it came out. it didnt have mylar in the pop bumper area, so I made a custom mylar with the removable stuff I was talking about. I just got a flash light, and its still there! You cant see it without knowing its there , and using a flash light. Its ready to be changed, but thats 10 years!!
I think I am going to see if I can find some to use on my new godzilla and playboy

Quoted from Tophervette:

I went full Cliffys on my Dr Who and did not have any fitment problems. With the raising and lowering of the Mini-Playfield in the middle of the PF it is a serious problem of during multiball that balls will either hit/smash the front of the MPF in mid-movement of get jammed between the MPF and PF as it is going down. This will lead to serious instant wear between the PF and MPF edges. Also on my old PF, I noticed how where the ball ejects from the ball trough is another serious wear area.

I noticed the protector on your mini pf. Its looks very cool. I like the edge protectors that cliffy makes. They look very nice installed. If one is installed in front of a drop target, its not going to effect the ball roll. Its all depends on the place and title you are using it on.

I have had one or 2 people tell me that the mantis protectors didnt protect the edge of the ball hole from kick out, but I dont know if they had their stuff installed right or their protector installed right.

I have had people experience probs with cliffy's protector not fitting good on my clear, so it is a good idea to tell him, so he can adjust it. Until now I didnt know that was an option. That was the biggest reason I didnt recommend them. Either way, this is another opportunity to promote the KRUZMAN PLAYFIELD INSTALL KIT. You can use it to get rid of any lip of clear inside the hole, and also use it to remove clear anywhere you need to so you dont force either a mantis or a cliffy protector.

The weather is suppose to change today, and get back above 32. There is only about 5 inch of really hard snow since its been below O at night for 7 days now. Yesterday the wind chill was 10 below in the middle of the day. so as soon as the snow melts I can get back to sanding, spraying clear and polishing. My compressor lines freeze up as well as my sander when its below 25.
I am chomping at the bit to get to work and make some money. I have a stack of 6 or 7 pfs packed up and ready to ship. I dont want them sitting in a trailer for a couple days when its this cold, so they will go out mon, or tue at the latest

I did this about4 maybe 5 years ago. Since then its gone to the west coast and back. I just got it back from the fella I did it for originally, and it looks like I wet block sanded it yesterday. Some pfs move around a little in the years after clearing, and some a lot if they were new/fresh when I did them. Usually I need to run the polisher over them for a sec. This is how it came out of the box. price is 1150 or trade plus or minus.
For reference the clear on this cost 700$

Hi Ron… Any chance you have a Centigrade 37 playfield sitting around not good enough to clear but you don’t want to throw away that you may part with? I’ve been looking for a worn one for another project unrelated to restoring a game. I built a pretty cool Telecaster out of a worn fathom playfield and have been itching to do a Gibson Les Paul out of a C37.

Oh man! I would love to help in a project like that. I am just goofy for les paul's. They were made here until about 1981? I forget when gibby closed. A couple of the employees are still alive and in town. They did heritage guitars for a little while. A guy named pete merino, is the go to guy for repair, and he used to work there.
ANYWAY, no I dont. I have a big stash of older pfs that I would like to restore some time, but prob wont since they dont sell and especially not for my price. as well as some that will never restore. Heck I bought a team one from here on pinside, because I like the colors, and I like the game, though I dont like sports or soccer.

There is a furniture company here in west mi called herman miller. They were the pioneers in the 50's and 60's of making high quality stuff from plywood. I absolutely love it. I dated a chick that worked there and they have a company store, where employees can buy like scratch and dents for next to nothing. I got my table and bar stools from there. Back before the cops raided the compound in 08, most of my furniture was herman miller, heywood wakefield, and steelcase. In 1970 there were over 30,000 furniture makers in west mich, now less than 3000 total employees. I forget why I am talking about it. Oh plywood.

today is the first day it is dry enough to open the big door and sand out side. I took a couple progress shots. On the tron, its a nerve wracking job to sand because if I hit the ink its done. there is no touching up that kind of art/pf. I took some pics of when I have the light outside I can see the reflection of the low spots in the pf. Either the texture of the wood, or the height of several layers of ink. Its so important to get it all. This is just da sanding. I will do hand sanding after, since I can do it in or outside.

I never really thought about it, but that WCS game restored is going to be a really collectable game. When enough time goes by and the subject is still popular (in this case WAY more popular in the usa). Next year will be 30 years. I know after all of the time involved in restoring a game, selling it is the last thing on your mind, but when you pass away or get divorced, your kids or wife will have fun selling it. HA! JK
I often think about the subject of whats going to happen when I die, to the compound and the stuff in it. The sad thing is my sister wont want to live here because her kids are on the east side of the state. She has a pretty good idea of the pinball world. Not the prices or anything, but she knows they are valuable since she owns 2 games. As for my all-Tube hi-fi system, or the 1956 graded ms67 type B Washington quarter in my collection, There are going to be some vulchers circling this place. That guy who said back in 1980 "the man who dies with the most toys wins" was obviously young, broke and stupid.
Anyway besides being a game that is a great design, and in perfect condition, it marks a historical event. So every time the world cup is going to happen the buz on this game will get louder. Since I am not a sports person, I just realized this year that the game is not just a soccer game but celebrates the 94 world cup in america. I did not know. I wouldnt doubt it if everyone has already known this. A duh?

Did you add the light-can on the left sling? Most games will benefit from having more light around the flippers, so I do that also. I noticed on my godzilla that stern got smart and added lights in the apron facing the flippers. Its a personal preference, but I really dig the colors on WCS, the goalie is very cool and I really like the lit up, roll over buttons on the way to that shot. I dont think any other game used those? I am always worried about getting clear in there when I spray, but that is what the "kruzman pf install kit" is for!

On that solar fire, there were a couple good size scrapes/chips that I had to touch up. There was a big scrape in the area that is red with purple dots that I was so happy came out so well. It looks perfect. Both the upper and lower had the crescent moons on one side of the inserts, that cleaned up well.
I really like doing these older pfs for customers that understand they take a lot of extra time/ money to look really good. I have been prepping an Incredible HULK this week that is going to require lots of luv.

I was working on the back of a target alpha when I noticed there was an insert missing that I hadn't noticed was gone, before. So I was panicking, looking all over the place and couldn't find it. So I sat down on the floor and did the old "if I were a wayward insert where would i go" and thanks god I found it.
crisis averted.
This is not one of those shop threads where you only see photos of the perfect work, in the surgically clean, uncluttered, more space than I need, shop.

Yeah, I did add the spotlight on the sling (I usually point it at the scoop) and I actually have another one that sits on one of the ramps. Just a little extra help in some of the darker areas. But that machine had old incandescents in it previously. Who knows, with new LEDs it may not even need the spotlights? But I'll leave 'em in there for now.

In my opinion, you can never have too much light. if its too brite for you, put a color in the can and it will be less but still light up the important area. So far every game I have done, I have added lights to. especially the games with more than one level.

Here is a sweet Dirty Harry NOS pf that I cleared about 4-5 years back. The clear looks amazing. I didnt clean the compound out of the holes and edges back then. If I get a chance I will clean them.
Rather than pricing it the price of the nos pf plus my clear, I price it from what I paid. So asking $1350. Its also hard for me to store these pfs with amazing clearcoats, since I cant stack them on their side, face to face and back to back, like I do with the normal nos pf's. Now that I have over 10 pfs for sale that have my clear, they are against every open wall.

I may have to take it out side and do the pics if it doesn't sell fast.

So I was digging around, in my studio and came across this classic stern wide-body IRON MAIDEN. Stern made 2 super cool games called VIPER, and IRON MAIDEN. They were both deep rule sets, amazing pf layout and super artwork. I had a viper game, and I always wanted the iron maiden. John Dayhuff has one, and I have been trying to get him to sell it to me for about 10 years. I found this pf set at a show more than 10 years ago, and its been in the shop to get restored for that whole time.

When I found it again yesterday, the first thing I thought was I will put this in line and get it restored, and sell it. Then I thought about it, and its a waste of time for me to restore these pfs, since they dont sell, and I have so many jobs waiting in line.
Its really easy to forget that there are only 24 hours a day. Anyway I am going to just put it up for sale as it is, and let someone with the time, restore it. I always wanted a pimped out, cleared, IM game with one of my pfs in it, just to have something super rare and super cool.

I have been told that most of the iron maidens and vipers when over seas for that market. The viper I had was a reimport so that makes sense. It also makes sense that starting in 1980, america started getting really conservative as far as boobies go. (see regan/mease anti pornography)

One of the cool things about maiden is its a really difficult multiball and you have to get the drops in order, or they come back up.

Do you keep your website up to date with the playfields you have or somewhere in this thread?

The website is usually within a month. So there are usually about 5 pfs that came in lately, and have yet to be listed. My friend runs it for me, I would be hard pressed to find a good website. I could never make one.
I have really been focusing on buying and sometimes selling pfs since last summer. My excuse is that they are for the business, but the truth is I love pfs, and love collecting them. Most of the titles I would like to keep for me get sold immediately, but that is ok. I really enjoy the feeling of having a pf that someone is looking for, and being able to hook them up, and not burn them for the most I can get out of them.

If there is a pf you want, I suggest dropping me a line and asking. I have a couple all ready that are not on the website. That dirty harry
safecracker and monopoly are not on the website yet.

The best way to do it, is to buy a nos pf. send it here to be cleared and fixed up, then do a parts swap. then sell your old pf or hang it on the wall. I dont have a ghostbusters pf right now, but they out out there for sure.

She was all right to have around. feisty old broad, but she was getting up there in the years. I dont know what was wrong with her guts, but you couldnt have the shortest convo with her, without her farting. Every 3rd step... honk! she didnt feel it or hear it or care, but it took me months to be able to not either giggle, or about choke from trying to hold back my laughs.

I have always been a maiden fan. I will own one some day. I still haven't played the premium yet. My buddy ryan bought one new and picked it up at the kalamazoo show. He was kind enough to set it up and let folks play. I didnt know the rules at all and I love it, plus the music!! It would have been a crime if that game didnt look as good as it does. All of the art work has been done over the years. Though they may be fun to play the LZ and rush titles do not draw me at all. My fear is that they will do a pink floyd pin and just make it uninspiring and lame. If they do a pink floyd pin, it better have something very new or cool as hell. Look at the toys on TOTAN. when that game came out, it must have blown minds, the cage ball saves, and the floating ball on the circle thing, plus the beautiful art.
anyway thats my 2 cents.

Also I want to invite anyone to post pics of any pf swaps they are doing, or any new pfs. I would like to see some nos pfs. I am always stressing that I will sell the last one, and they are all gone. should have saved one dummy.

I leave the room for a few minutes and you guys are messin around all ready???!!

First off, is it a grocery store?
That is an amazing line up of games, but I always want to know the story of the square pegs. Looks like a memory lane and a space mission or grand prix. The flash gordon still fits in a dmd collection, like centaur. Or maybe there is a whole row of older games you didnt shoot?

There is one thing that always hits me when I see amazing collections like this, and that is the financial commitment. Although we are finally back in the red with pins, where they will earn their money. My bloodline is full of low level gangstas, hustlers, and pimps that live on a cash basis. So I picture all of those beautiful quarters.

I have wanted to have a game on route since I got my first game when i was 14. I know nothing about the business really. I was just thinking that pinheads like me would get a boner if I saw that line up of games. I would spend all day there, which would make you about 8 bucks. Serious pinheads would be horrible for the business unless they bring their friends and significant others. I have always been super interested in a route. One friend who has a location with like 25 games told me that the claw game is the biggest earner. I think about it and the place I go, which is called "one well" has a 2 player guitar hero that is the only game people wait in line for.

So just like in pfs, I would pick the titles I like.... and fail. The titles I like seem to be the red-headed stepchildren of pinball. Half the time I like them because they are rare, or I just like the art.

I have about 40 pfs that I have had for 10 years and never sell, then there is the 10 or 15 that sell, get replaced, sell. I can never predict, except for a couple titles, TAF. Actually, when cpr made TAF repros for the first time, and they were the only ones available for a while then mirco came out with them. Anyway, I bought 7 of them. I borrowed the money. The last one sold this fall. Since I cant pick the ones that are going to sell, my policy now, is just buy any nos that I can afford (charge).
Anybody wanna buy a pf?

Wow!! thats an amazing collection!!! if I had a collection that big you can bet you bottom dollar, I would be teaching my wife and kids how to shop, diagnose, and fix pins. of course I dont have a wife or kids....

MY personal collection would have some of those for sure, but I like pre DMD games more than DMD games (not including the new LED screen games) Sys 80 and sys11 are my favs but I havent met many pins I didnt like. I want to play game of thrones. It looks cool to me so I think it may be a future game, but I want to play it of course.

So I figured the goofy thing on my Godzilla, was something like that. It cracks me up how people get all huff huff about their privacy, but sign up for stuff like that or have an I phone. I would havent thought, but recording peoples movements, thoughts and actions, seems to be very valuable.
So I can go on the net and see my scores?!?!? How cool! do I get to make a slick name for my self too? I would pay to be able to do that!! I will shut down the sarcasm, I could drive this one in to the ground

Quoted from skink91:

I bet if you can hold off for a year or two, you’ll be able to pick one up at a very fair price. So many out there, I suspect quite a few will hit the market around the same time.

I am totally unfamiliar with the prices of late model games, but with the demand of games of any title, my guess is godzilla will stay within 1000 of its sale price. I paid 9300 shipped. I dont even know if thats a good price or not.
Unless of course the pin bubble bursts, then all games will be cheap.

There is no way I could afford a 9300$ game. I financed it with zero down!!!!
I have spent years waiting for the prices to go down, and in the meantime, I am not playing and they are not going down. So i really meditated on it, and called upon my white trash roots spirit animal, the river rat, who told me to just charge it and if you walk in front of a bus, oh well!

Its an amazing game, and no use getting the pro, the spinning ramp on the right is a great addition. In my mind its right there with twilight zone, not as good, but its that kind of game (sorry to offend)

I sat down for a minute to call the auto part supplier and order some clear and sand paper, and while i was on hold I noticed what a black hole this pf is. I dont think I have said it before, but there is no other pf like this one (alien).
I took the pic from my view in the chair.

I am happy to have completed this simpsons. It looks amazing, but I didnt like how it looked the first time I finished it. I sanded it down, and did another final coat.
Like I have said before, I cant tell that I dont like it, until I get in to the number 4 polish with the 4th buffer pad. So one polish and one pad from complete. I usually quit for the day, when I decide, I have to re-do it.

We are freezing rain today and they called it a snow day because the ground is so slick. So inside pics only this time.

My power just came back on since wed afternoon. It sickens me on how addicted I have become to electricity and the net. Lucky for me I heat with wood for the most part, otherwise all of my pipes would have burst. I have friends that hope to get hooked back up by wed. There is not a generator to be found for counties.
I have 2 big ones, butmy dumb ass left gas in them for a year and a half, and it varnished the carbs so bad, neither will run. I am going to have to take them in to get fixed.

Anyway I get to work today. I was more than half way done polishing a quick silver when the power went out, and I did some block hand sanding on a 9 ball, so I can get to polishing that next.

If you ever have a question on weather a pf is one of mine if you send me the pics and info, I can tell most of the time. Often I will see one of my crates. If there is a bunch of compound in the edges of the holes, it was either one I did 9 or more years ago , or it is not mine.

Yes I sand and seal the back with 2 coats of poly

I would love a branding iron! that would be amazing, and I would be happy to pay for it. I actually had a metal shop in the early 90's, when I made metal furniture, as well as art, in chicago.

As soon as we have a clear day and the temp is about 30 or more I will be able to sand. Except the quick silver and 9 ball, every pf has been cleared, and needs to be sanded. My sander freezes up when its below 30. I keep the shop no colder that 45 at night, and its in the 60's in the day, but my lungs are all ready cashed. Sanding clear in side is so deadly unless I can open the big door and run the fans blowing out.

I havent been to my email yet, but I get about 50 a day, and its been since wed morning, so I am not looking forward to this.

Lastly , statictrance: no matter who did the pf you described, I wouldnt do it without my install kit. I wouldnt do a stock cpr without it. too many cracks, chips and lifts. with the install kit, you can eliminate all of those issues, and have a perfect job.

Quoted from monkfe:

I've learned to use the non-ethanol fuel they sell at the box stores and elsewhere for anything that sits in the shed or garage for exteded periods...it's pricey, but so worth it...I can start my chain saw up after a year...starts right up...they have it in stardard and 2 cycle...shelf life of two years...

My sister actually bought a a couple qts of that stuff for my chain saw. I learned 2 big lessons from the generators. the first is pump gas will spoil in 8 months easy, the other thing is the small engines' carbs gum up way faster than a car or tractors, with the parts being so much smaller.

Its on the list, and it wont be till after taxes and a bunch of other stuff, but I am going to buy new carbs (ebay). One motor is a briggs and the other is a 10 or 12 HP subaru motor. that one may be hard to find the parts for. I have been told my several people that its cheaper to just replace the carb, rather than try to clean and do new jets ect. Even better.

Quoted from Tophervette:

I can relate to your pain and experience. A tree does not fall often in my yard, but big branches do. I have been through 4 chainsaws, 2 weed wackers, one lawn tractor and one generator, that have all experienced the gum up the carb issue. The new Ethanol gas from the tree huggers (lol) is even worse. It will not only not last more than a few months, it will also dissolve rubber and plastic gas lines, fuel filter socks in gas tanks. I took the chainsaw to the repair place and was told it was cheaper to buy a new one. I took the lawn tractor in, and was told I have to leave a $100 deposit to even look at it. I let my 1990 corvette set for a few years, because I was busy with work and flying in and out of the country for work. $6000 later, I had to replace the intank fuel pump, clean the tank, replace the fuel filter, flush the lines, replace the injectors. And it ran like crap on the way home. In a 68 Camaro that I was restoring that took a few years, the rubber diaphram in the once new fuel pump attached to engine disolved, letting gas into the oil pan. Which ruined the bearings. Small boats here on the east coast, that use those small plastic gas cans had to switch to metal ones. Marinas and airports are the only places you can readily get the good old gas.

wow!
I was going thru those MTD tractors every 3 years (craftsman, cub cadette, "john deer") and i bought a comercial purpose built Altoz zero turn that I have had for 6 years now and just batteries and blades and oil. No stamped metal. its all tube welded. Even the deck is not stamped. It was 9 grand and i just remembered I didnt shut off the fuel and run the gas out of it. I checked and the battery is dead all ready. Last year I was treating all gas brought to the house, but I kind of forgot or ran out of treatment. I am going to have to start doing that again. Its an 850 cc motor on that mower, hopefully I didnt wreck another. It does have a flat, and in 6 years they dry rotted. It never ends.

That pf looks super nice. I would price it at 1800 or best offer. I came up with that number on how much you have in to it. The best offer part is how fast you want to sell it.
I will send anyone who contacts me about an AFM in your direction for sure.

Also the slab of wood on that afm is a really nice one. I think the quality of the repro wood has been going down a little at a time. That maple veneer is beautiful.

Why I dont have big assed hulk hogan "guns" is beyond me, considering how much I am sanding till my arms are numb.
On this BSD I wanted to show how you cant just run a sander over the surface. If you want a life long clear, you have to sand over the edges. Especially on the recent mirco pfs. he cleares before he cuts and drills the pf. so there are sharp edges that I need to soften.
In the first 2 pics you see after I DA sanded, but hadnt hand-sanded yet, nor dremmiled.

after hand sand, and dremmil. since i do this after each coat, I get my hard surface that has a great hold on the pf. Remember the automotive clear doesnt soak in like polyurethane. It stays on top

I wanted to document this NOS hulk to compare when complete. its going to be a lot of work. I believe I can make it look very good.my only serious concern is matching that fluorescent green. When you do fluorescents, you cant multi coat (they get darker not richer).
This is going to be a full restoration. I do want to do this job though. I dont have the game any more, and I dont want to drive up the price, but its an awesome game, with amazing art work. Adding a pasquel board replacement is a must, adding a skill shot! I never talked to the guy but the quality and engineering on his boards is way above the others (in my opinion). Talk about someone who has saved so many games! sys and sys 80 boards are not easy to replace. Someday I will write him and tell him how much I like his work.
so far I have glued the inserts, I used the glue kit and needle to inject some glue in the areas where the paint was crackling up and lifting. The stuff that will fall off by rubbing across it cant be saved, but when I inject some clear in the cracks it flows and wicks quickly up thru the cracks locking down the small peices and getting under them. So up in the top lanes where there is the paint damage, that has all been glued down so it wont keep coming off. This is going to be a lot of work.
I also have a 007, lady luck, solar ride, and solar fire. all nos jobs, and all ranging from quite a bit of work to a buttload!

This is tommys STARS repro pf.
I dont know how old this is, but I hope its old enough that its done with what its doing. The top laminate had lost of cracks, and splits in it. When this happens, and the split is big enough the edges on both sides of the split will lift up. If I sand, I will take off the lifted edges of the split. Then I am "in the shit" so I hand sanded and made sure to only and up and down with the grain of the splits.
This summer a friend was making some pfs, and this happened, and he was totally bummed, and felt they shouldnt be sold.
This happens either from the quality of the top laminate, or not sealing your top wood before screening and the moisture of the ink causes the wood to expand, and since its glued it finds the week spot and lifts there.

So if this pf was installed as is, it would wear badly, very fast!
So I need to use a super fast drying clear on the first coat to get this sealed. if the moisture had a chance to soak in to the edges of the wood, it will cause more cracks.

Here are some before pics where I tried to get the cracks to show in the light.
This is the worst example I have dealt with (of this issue). Often it is the seam from 2 pieces of laminate butted together. If that procedure is not done by a skilled craftsman when they are making the plywood, you will end up with a gap or a pucker after the wood cures, and contracts, or liquids ink makes it expand.
I think its also caused from not having a good adhesion. This could be from not letting the glue tack the right amount first or not spreading the glue evenly. All are possibilities

The way I do it is use the flat bit from my install kit. That removes the clear and the teeth push in with your thumb alone. then when you install it the teeth go down a little further. Those teeth hate clear coat if it is as hard as it should be, it bends them.

Quoted from splickety_lit:

Anyone ever used one of his boards for a Black Hole? I'm putting together one, and that sounds a lot better than finding original boards and hoping they work well.

I have not, but i restored a Black Hole, and a cleared pf and rebuilt coil assemblies made that game play as fast as a regular size pf, but on the wide scale. It was a brutal game and I loved it. Its gone, but I bought another to restore from a friend up in holland. Hopefully I will get the time and focus to get to it.

I want to express my anxiety and anger when I used a hammer to set t nuts when my pf was on the roticery. What a stupid move I made. Its so much better to have the pf on the bench with a chunk of 2x4 under the spot where you are going to hit to absorb the energy, rather than it going to the places where the pf was clamped on to the roticery.

I forgot which pf it was, but a couple weeks ago I set some t nuts with the dremmil to remove the clear and my thumb. I may have a strong/hard thumb or the wood may have been soft.

I dont know if anyone would try, but never never think you can set a t nut with a hammer alone. I am pretty sure I did it once in the past. It cant be done without damage.

we are suppose to get 6-10 inches of frozen rain and snow today, so I fear the power may be out for a week again.
Last night I polished out: 9 Ball
Quicksilver

So right now I am going to put on a lou reed record, and run a cloth thru all of the holes, large and small on those 2 pfs.

I got the CPR TOTAN almost fully block sanded. I still have to do 2000 and 3000, and it will get polished and finished in the next few days.

I dont know if the owners keep an eye on this thread to possibly see their pf. I will get pics of the 9 ball and QS hopefully today.

So if you are the owner of one of those 3 pfs, drop me a line and we will finish up the paper work so I can get them shipped asap.

Yep Ol lou is an interesting cat. or was one. This album is New york. back in 88 it was one of my fav albums. I remember that and keith richards solo album were about all I listened to until nothing's shocking came out from J's addiction. At the time i had a yamaha r9 with those cerwin vegas with the 15 in woofers. I was very loud in the off campus housing (plus a drum kit and I kept my motorcycle in the living room, by driving it thru the sliding glass door, and would get ripped and start it up)

This quicksilver and 9 ball both came out perfect. I cant find a flaw or anything I dont like. super happy with how that came out the QS needed the top 2 roll overs key lined and a 3/8 in hole drilled. The 9 ball was fine. Both only got one coat of poly rolled on the back, but I am not taking any chances messing around with them

Quoted from TheShadowsNose:

New York was an epic record for me for a long time. Every track is great IMHO. Very of it’s time.

I hadnt listened to it since about 91, and like you said, every song fits perfect. Its a concept album for sure and listening as an old man who didnt have kids, its an amazing work of a man thinking about his coming first kid. The first time I put the new album on, I knew all of the words to endless cycle, and forgot that is where they come from.
The line "The drugs in his veins only cause him to spit
at the face looking back in the mirror" has haunted me since the album came out.
My best friend Matt saw the tour at cranbrook in detroit, and says now, it was the best show he has ever seen. Lou played the new york album in order, then went thru his other stuff. I love when bands do that (if they have an album where every song is high art)

Just a news flash for whats going on in the shop
There are 4 pfs I have block sanded, and almost ready to polish out. I am putting a final coat of poly on the back today.

TOTAN cpr finally
Space Invaders cpr filally
centaur cpr finally
KISS cpr and a little before I expected.

So if you belong to one of them feel free to contact me and we can get the Invoice done, so it can be shipped when I finish. They are all ready to install as soon as they get home. Except for SI, they got their last coat on 2/5.
SI got an extra 2 coats on 2/14.

I will post pics when done

#2937 1 year ago

So I just finished running a cloth thru all of the holes in the TOTAN pf I just finished. Now I take it back to the studio, and put a coat of polish on it, and a decal, and get it wrapped.
I have to post the pics of the fat assed cat, Ruben. If you dont know him you think that he is the nice and friendly one, but now that I have had him and his brother since october (I think) I realize max (the black one) is the shy one like I thought before, but he is also the super cat. He will go for walks and hang out in the shop even if I dont have food. With ruben, its just food, and screw you.
So these pics are ruben doing his "make luv to the camera for food act"

Also a custom made crate to ship 2 cleared, classic stern repro pfs to the United Kingdom. I built it from parts I swiped from crates shipped here from wade krausse My usual crates are 48x23x3. When shipping overseas I use USPS, and there is a problem because the people that work there cant lift my crates with 2 pfs in it. not even close. so not only was I able to shave off 3 inches from the height I used 1/8"underlyment plywood which is the same cost as the usual 3/8 or 7/16 plywood I regularly use. The thin plywood shaved almost an inch off the thickness. The final weight was 32lbs compared to 43-45lbs which is the usual crate weight with 2 pfs. It still cost $220.00 to ship. I also included a prayer that was no additional weight.

I get so many emails about my pfs for sale on the website, and I get all excited because I can make the bills this months, and its someone from austrailia or New zealand who wants to know how much it is to ship a used $200 pf.
The usps changed their max size so that I cant send pfs to australia and more and that leaves Fed ex.
10 years ago, it was between 440-525 to ship a pf in a cardboard box. Things have not got cheaper since then, so I am not going to even try.

There is a market for someone who is savy, to charter a shipping container to Australia like 2 times a year, so you have time to let everyone ship the stuff to you and then pack up the container with parts and games that have sold and then you broker the shipping on the seas. Its would be a great service, and there would be plenty of money to be made, and people who would usually have to pay 500 for a pf to get to them would only pay 200-300 (plus the ship to the container)

FANTASTIC!!!!! WOW I want to play that one! love the craftsmanship, and the inside of the cab. looks amazing. glad to hear you have it tuned.

That cliffy protector looks awesome. It reminds me of when I do floor tile. when I end at a door way, I use this aluminum trim called scheluter trim (I dont know how to spell it) that puts a stainless finished trim-line, rather than seeing the edges of the tile. it also protects the tile from getting worn at the edge.

I am so proud of how cpr totan came out. this was from their first run, and they were using some goop for the primer/leveler, and it was all running down the sides of the holes. The counter sinks for the save guide that goes to the flippers, as well as the t nuts and pops were just full of very hard material and clear. also there were drips down both the sides of the pf.

Almost every, (possibly every) insert was off center enough to show wood, so they all got painted as well as i could. a couple are not perfect because i couldnt make the key line any thicker!

I will do some before pics. These were all taken after a couple hours of filing out all of the holes. the holes for the cage that comes up and catches the ball on the sides, were about 1/2 obstructed

SI is a huge assed plank!!
Back in the ol days of pinball when a really nice SI sold for 750 running good, my buddy todd C and I took his SI to pinball at the zoo to sell. It played great, and we set it up and it played horrible. it was all screwed up. couldnt get it to work right. So it didnt sell. When we took it a part to go home, we noticed the ground braid was not hooked up. That was the problem. Live and learn.

That shower drain is sweet. They didnt have that back when I did tile. Restoring floors tile and wood were my favorite jobs. I had 2 really nice floor sanders, and I would talk people in to borders both in wood and tile. I spent 2 winter months in plya del carmen tiling a friends condo, and I brought home a bunch of the custom painted tiles and tried to splash them in. you cant see my schluter trim, but its between the carpet and tile. this is my basement hi-fi room that is 16 by 36.
Then I had 3 vertebra fused (L3, 4,and 5).
I couldnt do an hour of floor work, and much as I enjoyed it.

That is a FANTASTIC pic of the playboy cab and the flowering trees!

Yes eldorado city of gold. Mr sunarf gets the happy-face sticker.

so that beautiful cab makes me think of something that has been on my mind, which is how the playboy pins will fare, now that a faction of america thinks very low of playboy. I have all 3 games and I love them because of the game designs and art, but also because I am 56 and I grew up with skin mags (and pin-up art). The house I grew up in was pretty militant anti-sex so I was eager to have risky art when I got my own place. I got a subscription to playboy from my girlfriend when I was in college, and by the 3 issue I didnt even open them. In the 80's and 90's their representation of women did nothing for me. If I saw one more girl with a cowboy hat on a hay bale I would barf. If I remember correctly the articles and politics seemed pretty conservative and snobby to me.
Once I realized that there were other skin mags, that had no articles and, the photo content was more my speed...

ANYWAY, I never had anything for playboy, the actual magazine. I did really like the idea though. If they made a swank or hustler pin, I think I would have preferred that over playboy.

So the original bally game has all ways been a collectable, and being a true collector at heart, I got the whole set. right now I just have the stern-version set up and its a fantastic game. its very original, the set up is unlike any other, and with the 2 way mirror, and the peep show window that goes down, it has cool toys I have never seen used.

So I am wondering if the demand is going to go down on the playboy games. Hell there are a lot of people in pinball right now that have no memories of a hidden skin mag being the first chance to see sexual images.

I havent seen what the bally games are selling for (actually selling), but I have noticed the stern and DE versions selling for the very bottom tier of the price scale. On facebook last week I think stern playboy was the lowest priced DMD game for sale.

I dont even know what WOKE means. is it an acronym of something. I do know that the me too movement may have been some of the reason for the big 7 part documentary CNN did on playboy, and they showed hef to not be the dirty uncle, but just the lowest of low flesh peddlers. The other big part of the docu was that the women who posed in the mag were very displeased that they couldnt get a job as an executive at playboy. For some reason they thought modeling was a rung of the corporate ladder. I dont know but many were very mad.

So after watching that, I started thinking that the playboy games are not going to have the fun draw that they used to have, and if the selling prices would go down to Disco Fever's level.

I probably shouldn't have included so much personal info and opinion in this, but I would like to hear if others have an opinion, or have bought or sold one of the games, or if you fell like you would never own one of those. also if you have any sold prices of any of the 3 playboy games that would be interesting also.

If you havent played the stern version, you really should. It has a wild flow, with short and long shots. Great call outs and music. I owned the game for 6 or 7 years before I got it running and cleaned. I had never played the stern version even though I had one at home for years. so the first time I played it was after it was torn down to the bare pf, and shopped and tuned.

#2967 1 year ago

so I got done block sanding this kiss pf, and it was ready to polish and be done, when I noticed the back was not dimpled. the front has what I thought were dimples, but they are actually the holes that go all the way thru. the front only needed about 45-50 dimples, but the back needed a good 140.

So I drilled the dimples, going thru 6 coats, and none lifted, or got a halo or had any issues.

I still have to use the install kit to inject something in them to seal them, because when I polish I cool with water, and the water would quickly go in those holes and get absorbed, causing the spot to swell up, and look like crap.

In the depressing winter, when i get bummed, lonely whatever, I get this feeling that I can only describe as wanting to consume. Its been like that all my life, and has a lot to do with my drug/booze addictions, as well as obsessive compulsion. So In my older age, rather than dope, booze and hookers, I consume pfs and ebay goods (mostly coins).
So this week I scored lots of pfs. a month ago, I maxed out one card buying pfs and I said I was done, but I still had another card. Ha ha! jokes on them?
Anyway i got:
avatar
game of thrones
nos space shuttle
a sweet cpr flash gordon
Munsters pro which is beautiful. never played that game, but now I want to!
I swear there is one more, but I cant remember. All the better surprise when it shows up!

Quoted from T3quila:

I do remember people complaining that the Musters code was too shallow for a modern home game, but you do love all the old games that didn't have all the modern code depth anyway, so that might be right up your alley. I don't have enough time on the machine to say either way, I maybe played a couple of games in my life on one.
There is a big difference between Pro and Premium: The premium has a secondary playfield underneath the main playfield with mini flippers and mini balls. Pretty cool gimmick, but I can see people getting tired of that quickly and the Pro may be ultimately the way to go.
I remember that one of the two was in black and white instead of in color and that one looked really sharp.

I do like the older games, sys 80 is my fav, so I dont need deep rules. they are nice sometimes, but like LOTR and simpsons was too deep for me. didnt like either, and they are 2 of the best selling games in 20 years.
This one is a de-pop from a scratch down by the flipper save lanes. same place as that ghostbusters I fixed, so I know I can sand it out.
It looks like stern is trying to put me out of biznuz. The clear is amazing and the print is perfect. they really upped their game.

The Game of thrones looks awesome but is not dimpled come to find out so I can sell it for 475 and the avitar is amazing with a beautiful clear, drilled and dimpled I can sell for 650. Once they go up on the website and in the books they go up in price once I have to pay taxes on them

Gene at IPB used to prefer to sell the pfs at shows, so that people wouldnt be surprised when they opened the box. every IPB pf is different from another. KISS was his first pf reproduction, so he learned a lot on it. I think this pf is one of his first batch. so this is all of 20 years old. It looked pretty darn bad when it got here for a repro.
I didnt go crazy fixing the art on this pf because its so busy it really doesn't matter. I fixed 6 or 8 inserts that I couldnt live with and that was it.

I did dimple it after the clearcoat, and that came out perfect.

I have mentioned before that i suffer through issues of obsession and compulsion. If I start thinking of all of the opportunities for the pfs to get wrecked, my eyebrows will fall out.

#2983 1 year ago
Quoted from RCA1:

All at once, or gradually?
Cause I'd kinda like to see it if it was all at once.

Well I figured my eyebrows were next, since the hair on my head all disappeared in less than 10 years. No balding in my genetics for 4 generations!!

I did date a girl after college who used to have to draw on eyebrows because she pulled them out due to OCD. I didnt even realize it until someone pointed it out. When I thought about it and tried giving them a tug, its actually a reasonable response to being stressed. Whatever it takes.

#2986 1 year ago
Quoted from Aurich:

Seems kind of rude to tug on her eyebrows to be honest.

HAA! I did horrible things to her, but I didnt pull her eyebrows! haa

So I share my learned experience pretty freely with folks. This is one I have to balance all of the time, but lucky for this pf, it is owned by a friend, who has the patience to see the process thru.
This pf had a lot of cracks that developed in the top laminate after it was crafted. Its the wood (laminate) not the pf makers mistake. This does illustrate that plywood used before its dry will not look absolutely perfect, after it dries. So its all a matter of balance and doing what you can do.
I showed the pics of the cracks a month ago, and since then I sanded it visually flat with the sander. After I laid 2 coats it looked very flat when I used above light at an angle. That lasted for about a week then the cracks started showing in the clear, as it cured and shrunk.
So these pics are sanding after 2 coats and a month. The cracks came back, but only about 25% of the depth that they were. Now that I have some depth to the clear, I can sand it as deep as I need, to get rid of them.

I have found thru experience that there are 2 wait times (in a perfect world). There is waiting for the newly made pf to cure which includes the wood, ink, glue and clear. The second period of waiting is in the clear process, letting each coat, or in this case set of 2 coats, harden and shrink. Its always hard to quantify because the change or degree of change is always variable. There is no one solution. Its just a matter of how much time it is realistic and or convenient to wait, and invest in to the finish of the pf, which is just a part of a whole restoration.
Lately I have been leaning toward my process taking more time, because its frustrating a year down the line when the surface of the clear is no longer micro-perfectly flat.
I am talking about minuscule deviations from what I earlier saw as perfect, when I was done with the job.
Its natural to constantly try to improve my work as well as make it more efficient. I have to remind my crazy brain to be realistic on how much time to take on a job.

So I was taking some pics of a couple days of prep work, and saw a visual opportunity to show those cracks coming back but to a lesser extent. I ended up analyzing my work on a pf's clear as my contribution to the universe. I will not delete this one though because it shows the balance act of time. The clear is made so that a cars clear can be done in one day. If you apply another coat at the right time, it will melt in to the previous, and you can build it as high as you want. It will be dry to the touch and be able to be driven out of the shop the next morning. The more coats you add the longer it will take for the clear to fully cure. In the meantime curing in wood and clear usually means shrinking as the liquid molecules evaporate.

I am making something fairly straight forward complicated, but thats what we do when you do something long enough, and spend to much time alone.

Some da sanding, and noticing some attention is necessary to the star roll overs on this paragon I am just getting started on.

Even with all of the huge grow lights in my studio, nothing beats a sunny day's light. So I drag my work table out in the parking lot, where I can see much better and find all of the hidden little issues that will come up in installation or game play.

Quoted from mmr61184:

Any words of wisdom on here from you guys on drilling the roll pins for the flippers on a new playfield. My NOS TAF that Ron cleared for me does not have the holes pre drilled and I am shit scared about drilling those bastards in

I always have issue on weather or not I should drill them when I drill and dimple. I decide not for 2 reasons. the first is I am not sure they will be the right combo or place on this pf since I am working off a template from another, and they need to be exact.
The other issue is I dont use or like them.

Drilling out that kiss pf that I was totally done with the clear, was no problem at all. I would definitely use the glue after drilling them because of the nature of the pins pushing outward. It's made to want to grab the sides, if it is going to be moved.

Quoted from mmr61184:

I have no issue not putting them in and honestly would save me from a mild heart attack while doing it. How do you line up the flippers otherwise

I do it by eye, making the line continue straight thru the bottom edge of the flipper. Sometimes a straight edge, but mostly watching the ball roll and then adjust.

It would be a good question to ask someone like tommy skinner. he restores games, as well as routes games, and I know he makes his games right so they can have tournaments. next time I talk to him I will ask what he thinks. Daane in grand rapids or dayhuff in battle creek would be other opinions I would be interested in hearing.

I hate the way they attract dirt, get wax stuck in them, and also I have used them before and they were not right. (used the tooth pic as the tool).
Its an area that gets a HUGE amount of ball travel so if I can avoid making a hole there, and new edge to wear I would. I am not the master of tuning games though. I am not even goo at it. so I will shut up. I am good at cleaning them and the pins make waxing a pain.

I am usually focused on the back end of the flipper not causing the ball to bounce or stall. A nice smooth straight line off the rails.
sounds like pillow talk.
