And here is another NOS prototype. I am realizing how bad my old gun was because I am super happy with the clear lately. I didnt realize how it was splattering until I bought a new one.
This pf got drilled and dimpled also except for the last inch and half on the left side because that had been cut off the template pf so it would fit in a drop ceiling grid. basically its the side rail holes.

I forget who owns this one. I will have to dig up the records.

My wife saw this STTNG playfield in progress when we went to Ron’s to pick up my RBION. She normally tells me I don’t need more games, but seeing this playfield was the first time I’ve heard: “I think you need one of those!” Then she saw the TZ Proto in progress and added: “Why don’t you have one of those?”

No better testimonial to the quality of Ron’s work than my wife encouraging me to buy more games!

I really have to get started on that RBION….. Soon (I’ll post pics for y’all, of course)

I am not really wanting any WPC games at this point in my life... except BSD. Man I love this dark assed game.
I got this pf blocked so flat, its just going to scream when its installed! The owned likes the worn look/effect, but I had to paint the round insert in front of the rat hole. Its such an eye draw, that I hate that big round circle from the insert below.

Beyond excited, it looks great. Can't wait to get it installed and playing ... should really scream!

The touchup around the big insert by the rathole looks great also. The black touchup makes him look even MORE demented! So good.

I just got a cpr Earth Shaker. Other than 3 triangle inserts that I didnt notice when I bought it (extra ball, 2 green lock ) that show just a sliver of edge its a super nice repro. It has a nice stock clear with no wood grain raised or the inserts haven't dropped. I cant tell if it is screened or printed. Its going up on the website when tommy gets time. So if you have any interest or questions, let me know.
I am always interested in trades!

So this is an early IPB kiss pf. It had a horrible clear on it that was so full of vapor holes, it was like pock marks every where, as well as dusties. I think it was done in a garage, by someone who had no idea what they were doing.
I started to sand it with the sander and 500 grit, but the depth of the vapor holes was all the way down to the ink. I quickly stopped using the da sander, because I own a kiss pf from this batch, and when I was trying to sand out the holes, I hit the ink several times, and caused problems, but then I hit the ink in the center of the pf and took the word scores right off the pf, thru the white and down to the wood. It happened so fast I had no idea. so I have tried a couple ways to make a sticker for the scores area, but I will have to paint the white, and to make it look right, and would have to paint a lot of it.

There is one pic of my pf. Its the one where there is a sticker on the spot where I sanded it off, just to see how it looked. I realized a sticker wont work I need someone to cut the script with one of those vinyl cricket cutting machines, and apply it after I paint the white.
So I took a beating on this pf, and I would rather sell it for 400 bucks as is to someone who is up to the challenge. CPR has not had any in stock in a long time.

So the rest of the pics are a new job that I was hand sanding, and I had to be so careful, not to get in to the ink. super stressful, so I was taking pics so I would be able to explain to the owner what happened, but because of my experience with my kiss pf, and doing it all by hand, i got the whole things sanded without any damage.
You can see on the edge of the black screens, where the thickness of the black ink makes the block miss the clear on the edge of the black. Its especially difficult in the inserts.
I work under a big LED light system and I have to look at it from all angles to find the shine, as well as the dots, from the vapor holes. Those I had to be super careful with, because there was no clear in the center of the circle. This took most of the day, and this is exactly one of the reasons I went to college. when I was a kid working at a car wash in the michigan winters, the owner used to say you better go to college so you dont have to do this shit your whole life. I do more hand sanding now after 2 degrees, than I did before any college. Its a good lie to tell kids, but I am just pissy that I believed what they told me back in the early 80's, and that was you go to college and get rich.

I cant imagine the product you get when people take a pf to a body shop, and they spray a dust coat, and then spray it. they dont sand it, and if they did they wouldnt be able to fix the issues that they caused.

When it comes to some things, there is no getting around the fact that the more hard, crappy work, you put in to it, makes it a higher quality job

Man Ron, that sucks. I wish I could have given you more info on the provenance of the KISS PF but I just didn't get that info when I acquired it. So glad you're making progress, albeit slower than you'd like.

Its not a prob just part of the job. If my job was the same every day, I dont know how I would do in that situation. When they are all the same I guess you work on efficiency, which sorta comes natural to me. When I get to issues like the kiss pf, or painting, I have learned to just accept that this is going to take some time. I remind myself its better than digging ditches or a real job for sure!!!!

So this is a early quicksilver repro by mirco. It needed the roll over insert's key lines painted, which means its missing a half inch hole under the apron that was missed during original production.
I couldnt fine my notes on the placement, and I asked tommy. He quickly found them here on pinside in a post Daane did right after they came out.
When I couldnt find my notes, I still prepped and started the clear process until I realized, I only have 2 more coats to go, I better do this hole.
Since I had 3/4 of the clear all ready down on the pf, I picked out one of the bits from my handy kruzman install kit, and I drew my circle. My extension cord was being used, and the extra one was in the other barn and I didnt feel like getting it. So I decided that this will be a good opportunity to experiment on how brittle the clear is and how much it lifts, ect.

I drilled a pilot hole, and no lifting or chipping at all, none. ( I dont know what size it was, but it is the drill I use to predrill the drywall screws in my crates)
Then I drilled with the 1/2 in bit. Its a high quality, sharp bit. The clear didnt chip at all.
I just need to sand and or file the edges, and the last 2 coats will take care of the edges.

Since I am a male of 55 years, and college, I think its safe to assume I watched caddy shack at least 50 times in my life. Probably many more. Now that I think of it, thats where I got the ditch digger theme. I got it from caddy shack. not my grandpa.
I am a horrible golfer, and I know that movie word for word.
Things I have held as gospel.... no dummy! you picked it up from caddy shack.
I walk around alone singing under my breath, "I was born to lick your face"

I have been painting since friday. It took me 2 days to paint 90% of the inserts on this cpr totan. I painted every insert that you could see a cresent of wood from the mis alignment. Its such a beautiful, expensive game, I dont think a crappy looking pf should be installed, especially with my clear.
I havent always double coated my black key line stuff, but I have been putting them on the light table after paint, and the inside edge of the black which is painted over the insert, sometimes is not thick enough and you can partially see thru the paint when the insert is lit. It looks perfect on my bench, but like I said when I put it on the light table, the lines are not so sharp. So I am now just doubling everything.

Do you think I am off track here, and just going too far? maybe if this was a used pf, but installing this pf is a huge job, and this game cost more than my car, so Its my opinion, that is there was ever a case to do it right, this is it.

finally getting to this centaur. sorry for the delay. When stuff needs paint work, I wait until there is a bunch of it, so I can focus on it all day, rather than doing 4 different kinds of jobs in the same day which leads to mistakes for me. If I am going to do it, I may as well tighten up the arrows also.

You cant really see the paint work on the congo.
I got 2 new cats. they were abandoned in a mobile home, after the tenants moved out. These are 2 of the biggest cats I have ever seen. They are super chil and rode home in my car without cat carriers. I didnt hear a peep from them. Thats a good start. Hopefully that wont bankrupt me from feeding them, or see me as a possible dinner. I have to get them some medicine, and get them to swollow it, and I am not sure I am man enough to make a 42 lb cat take his medicine. This is the smaller one ruben. The other is max. couple of nice jewish boys

good idea but its this slimey yellow custard type stuff that you have to give about half a syringe full. in the past my cats have acted like I am sending them to the gas chamber. such drama queens. I just dont want to get shredded by these beasts. Maybe wait a week. Let them get to know who payd for the food around here.

Here are some after pics of the inserts on the totan. (the before pics are about halfway up this page). I dont know if many others get as annoyed by the misaligned inserts as I do. It screams reproduction, and I like things to look NOS even if they are repros. This is just one coat of clear so I could put it on the light table and see how it looks.

Quoted from kruzman:

Ron you did it again... One of you pix from K-I-S-S center animatase itself.

Happy new year!!
I have been working in the shop all weekend, finishing up a Taxi, and a champ pub. They will be done this week. My living room is full of new pfs that are available. That is a very Rare NOS Bally Rolling Stones, with no insert cupping! its in amazing condition!
The NGG is a repro with a beautiful stock finish.

If you have been waiting to send a pf here for clear coat, now is a good time. There are only about 15 jobs in the studio and I have 6 pfs that have the last coat down and they just need the last 2 days of work before they are complete.
Here are the pfs that are done except final sand and polish
quick silver
catacomb
a motorcycle racing pf that belongs to matt. I dont know the name of the game
Taxi
quicksilver
space invaders
champ pub
STTNG proto complete

Also its a good time to make an offer on buying one of the pfs in stock!. You can always check with me to see if I have a title in stock. Or check the website pinballplayfieldskruzman.com

There is always a hand full of pf's that havent got up on the web site yet. I also have a strange world reproduction

Lets hope for a great new year, and the end of the war in Ukraine.

Happy new year Ron! If you still have that playfield I want when I've got the spare cash you know I'll be in touch.

Quoted from kruzman:

Amen.

Sorry I didnt make it clear. the list of games that are almost complete, are customer's pfs.
I do have over 70 new/nos/repro pfs for sale besides those.

#2591 1 year ago

I just got the first to Heavy winter electric bill for the studio. I am going list a pf, or a used pf, or parts that I have in the shop. I am going to try to sell them first, before asking Tommy to put them up on the web site. If they dont sell I will probably send him the pics to put up when he has the time. His son Conrad, should be off to college in about 18 years, he will have time then.

Here is a list of pfs I have, used
Fish tales
Popeye
Attack from mars
joker poker
family guy
shadow
demo man
high speed
6 mil dollar man
T2
volcano
Haunted house set
Black Hole set
Earth shaker
Incredible hulk
007 (gottlieb)
cue ball wizard
Magic
stern Iron maiden set
apollo 13
IJ
congo
BSD
Totan, almost completely restored, needs clear. I may put this in the line up to get finished.

Today we have a IPB Circus Voltare repro. I dont remember where this one came from, it been in the shop for a couple years. Its a really pretty pf, but Gene never really ironed the kinks out of CV, before his biz ended. I remember when he made these, and he only made 30 of them. They are not as sharp as the original, its not dimpled. If I remember correctly, this was a prototype of printed pfs, which is why its not a sharp as a regular screened pf. It seems like it was like 2012 when they were made. (guessing). It has the stock clearcoat. Its been in the shop a long time, and moved around so it has scuffs and what not.
I am horrible at selling anything that is not perfect, because all I list is the imperfections, but that is because I assume its perfect otherwise. So I have learned when I sell stuff on ebay, to just keep my trap closed and show plenty of pics. Since I only mention the flaws, it sounds like the thing I list is garbage. price is 475 OBO
If you want more pics or have questions send me an email. lets not negotiate or talk about it on the thread if possible.

Hopefully, this idea will fund the heat and power, and a new compressor!

If you have experience installing one of these IPB CV pf's, I would like to hear how it went, or how it ended up.

#2593 1 year ago

I have had this populated mini pf for fish tales for years, hoping to use it. I was thinking about offering populated pfs at the time. asking $350. I have a populated IJ mini around here somewhere also. The surface has some planking though. I do remember that it needed to be restored for sure.

I have installed this exact pf. With the pink “Join the Cirqus”. The missing dimples was a monsterous pain. Had to do lots of measuring and templates to get it right.

Playfield looks great to me. All the holes for the mechs were in the correct positions and really no surprises.

#2595 1 year ago

I dont believe I have a dimple pattern for cv, but I will check.
I believe it is less work to buy the $150 of plexi, and make a template of each side, assuming you have or can borrow another pf that is dimpled, rather than dimpling as you go. Problem is: you cant always borrow, find or buy a pf, from which to make a template.

Here is a pf that I have never had the pleasure to work on, and I love it! I dont know the fella that made this, but he gets 2 thumbs up for his art and design. The girl, the colors, the deep colored inserts. The only thing I would change is make that a pack of Lucky's in her hand. That would be extremely cool.
I included a pic of the original pf off of the IPDB. I have not seen a BG that goes with this, but if it just had the girl riding the rocket, it would be awesome! Anytime a pin up is riding or straddling something phallic... well I am a fan! If you have a pic of the BG please post it here for me.

It appears that this pf is sealed/cleared similar to the way Wade does his: A coat of lacquer or polyurethane is screened across, as the final screen. I think wade does at least 2 coats on his and that is still super thin. Its as thin as the ink used.
so I have to be super careful, when I sand these for prep, but this one has an issue I am not sure I can fix, or to what extent. Luckily, this belongs to my dear friend tommy skinner, who is easy to please. Tommy is the fella who does my website, and in return, I am his pf man. (there is a song in there somewhere)

I did an apprenticeship in a custom cabinet-makers shop 25 years ago, and this happens more often that I wish. Wood is such an unpredictable organic material. This plywood that pf makers use is cabinet wood, which means it has a super thin laminate glued on top of regular plywood. If you think about how they make laminate, you will understand why it happens. I sell my walnut trees to a mill that makes laminate, and they put the log on a lathe, spin it and get the gum wood off, that is the white wood around the outside (where most of the water goes up the tree), and then slice sheets as big as they can that are the thickness of construction paper. Its a beautiful procedure, and the operation I saw was an unbelievably expensive, super sharp, super thin, long blade, and it peals off the outside like a potato. They keep the sheets in order because when we made expensive cabinets we needed the wood grain to match if there is a seem, or even if not a seam. I never really thought about it, but if the mill making the plywood and applying the laminate had an acct with a pinball manufacture, it would be a great way so sell the sections that dont match or the grain runs a funny way, since its going to get inked. Either way pf makers pay a lot for the wood. I havent been told the price since before covid, so no idea how much now.
One of my jobs at the cabinet shop was to glue down laminate sheets that were chosen, which was a neat job. The the glue smell was harsh for even me.

So what we are dealing with on this pf is the laminate has split up. When they cut laminate i think they did it when it was still very wet so that it was pliable. sometimes it gets glued down and then dries, or gets moved to a dryer environment, and when wood dries, it cracks and splits. Even though the whole underside is covered in glue and stuck to the pf. I think the sheets that were made on the outside of the log, were more prone to this. I have forgotten so much from that experience I shouldnt be trying to explain it. Its an organic material. It was alive, and dynamic, it moves, changes, reacts.

It was common that a couple months after installation, we would get a door returned with cracked laminate. If you imagine it is just stained the cracks can range from looking "organic", to a split that you can put your finger nail in. many people griped when it was just a slight issue of appearance, but we often got people complaining if the doors didnt all match perfect in tone as well as grain (which is impossible).

The first thing that comes to mind for repair is sand it smooth. Problem is the laminate is so thin that you can either make the crack wider, or easily sand right thru it. On this pf the laminate cracks are on a dark color so they really show. If it were a light color it wouldnt. so rather than block sanding this flat as I normally do I have to sand it with non blocked sandpaper. I will build up the clear to level out the surface, but down under the clear the cracks will still be there. I am interested to see how well or much they show. If they were cracks that were open, I can make it disappear easier than puckered like these. If I sand thru and hit ink I am going to be in big trouble, because the back ground on this is huge, and there are no natural borders to it from key lines or other color edges (for repaint of that area).

So it will be a challenge, and thats what I do for a living, fix up pfs. Not roll doobies.

I was just reminded the problem with selling projects, or used pfs or anything that is not absolutely perfect. Someone contacted me about the nos DE simpsons pf that I lost interest in a couple years ago. it was about half way done. I drilled and dimpled, sanded and sealed the back prepped, did more than half of the paint work and locked it down with a coat, and then sanded it level so the paint could be finished and be cleared.
So a month later I get a letter that says your paint looks bad when you put light behind it, and it is not even, and its going to cost 500 to get finished.

here is the first letter I write. one of 20 some explaining that the job is not done.

Hello. The de simpsons is indefinitely on hold. I get about 2 emails on it every single day. It blows my mind.
I dont do restorations any more because I havent figured out how to make more than 7 bucks an hour. I did it full time for 5 years before it bankrupted me.

So anyway , I clear pfs, both repros and NOS, and I perfect them first. Like most nos pfs have cracks around the inserts, or other things that should be fixed before clearing.

I have been clearing pfs 6 and 7 days a week for several years, and I just dont have the time to put in to the simpsons. it is for sale as it is for 1300. I have drilled and dimpled it, done most of the paint work, locked it down with a thin coat of clear, and sanded it. so its ready for yellow, and black. most of the other colors are done.
Thanks and have a good day, ron kruzman

Not only do I not want someone to be unhappy with something they bought from me, but I realize now that this person is going to look for help and write everyone to say I bought this from kruzman and look how bad it is, not mentioning that I explained that its a project and not complete. I said the paint needs to be finished and it needs clear before it can be installed. I thought the person was going to finish the work, install it and be happy. Maybe go buy some paint and a brush, and figure it out. it just takes time. LOTS OF TIME.

if its 500 to finish the paint and clear it, thats a steal. But we all know that pinball is a hands off, easy, inexpensive, not labor intensive hobby.

So now I have to rethink selling some projects in the shop to help with the bills and compressor. everything has to be idiot proofed before shipped. I suppose I have to install it also.

Just venting. frustrated. I need a wife or room mate
