I was just thinking that also. here is why, I was looking thru my stacks of nos pfs and I saw a couple that I have had for over 15 years, and I saw my speak easy pf. its made on that fiber resin board, so it is in perfect condition. NO cracks from wood grain.
So i was thinking I should have a centerfold pf every month. either from my stuff or one I finish.
any support for that or is it dumb?
Quoted from PlanetExpress:Wow… this one is mine, and while I guessed that Ripley’s would look nice cleared, this final product blows me away! Great work, Ron!
Take a look at the last pic. if you look at the top of the pic it shows the holes for the side rails, and for some reason I didnt get them sealed.(below and above the 2 t-nut depressions). When I polish a pf in the summer I have to run Ice water on it, because it gets so hot that the inserts will expand, and cause the clear to crack around them. its super easy to wreck the pf. I go thru all kinds of trouble, I wont describe, to keep the pf cool.
So in the process of polishing I noticed that a couple of holes for the side rails were not sealed, and the water caused the wood to swell. You cant notice it unless its super glossy and you see it from an angle.
so I stopped. I had to get the holes cleaned out so they would dry, and then I had to carefully water proof them, without screwing up the clear since it was all ready 25% polished. I use my compressor at 130psi and blow out the holes to get the water out of the smallest little nooks.
Long story, sort of short. I went thru and carefully resealed all of the dimples and cut outs edges, and then went back to polishing, and it came out awesome, but there are 3 or 4 holes on one side for the side rails, screws, where the dimple is just a little swollen. If you dont look at the right light and the right angle you cant see it. I took about a dozen pics before I got it on camera.
Otherwise she's a beaut!!!!!
This is a nice used AFM I have hanging on the wall in my studio. Its still hasnt had the front cleaned. Before I restore them I use a magic errasser which takes off all of that black stuff around the screw holes.
Just a pic of pfs I have around. I like these used afms. To me they look super cool
Quoted from kruzman:any support for that or is it dumb?
I'm for it, but I admit, I'm as much of a geek over playfields as anything else. The combination of wood work, art, and light? .. Yeah, can't beat that. Even seeing something like a completely sanded front to a PF, with just the inserts there is neat and draws the eye.
Quoted from Coyote:I'm for it, but I admit, I'm as much of a geek over playfields as anything else. The combination of wood work, art, and light? .. Yeah, can't beat that. Even seeing something like a completely sanded front to a PF, with just the inserts there is neat and draws the eye.
I have 1 or 2 of those that are nos. Just wood and inserts. dont know the title
Here is a pf I have had way over 10 years. I really like the game, but never owned it. I like all of the card and pool theme pins. This is a resin pf, so there is no warp at all, now cracking paint or grain. the inserts didnt rise or sink.
Its on my website pinballplayfieldskruzman.com
its priced at 750, but its going up to 800 in the next couple days
Quoted from kruzman:I have 1 or 2 of those that are nos. Just wood and inserts. dont know the title
Post them. People here will figure them out.
Quoted from Coyote:Post them. People here will figure them out.
I will get them and take pics. I have planned on doing a custom pf, but its been 10 years and I still havent, so I may as well see if someone else would like to give it a try.
I must have sold the other that I had that was just wood and inserts. it was a stern around 2004 era. I think we can guess which this is. so this is an original used pf thats been sanded, and had the white put down.
The front holes are so clean I thought it was new repro or nos.
So this would be great for one of those hard tops. none of the holes are blown out and the inserts look new
Ron the Space Shuttle was mine from a bunch that did not go for printing with the old colorspan. Omni clear for finish is what is used most of my playfields over 14 year span.
Quoted from kevmad:Ron, just curious, how many playfields do you own? 100, 200 or more?
1
between 100-200.
Pete mathis and one other fella cleaned me out of about 50 used pfs in 2 days. I used to have lots of used, when I restored them, now is most NOS/repro, but I have been buying a bunch of nice used pf to have to restore one day, plus I dont see many new repros for sale, so I get whay I can.
I have a matta hari repro I cleared coming back home
a nos Bally rolling stones, and a nos stern Jurassic park.
I found a sharkeys shootout, used here on pinside I hope to get.
I have about 25 mostly nos, but some used, pfs that I started working on, and they got put aside. Its horrible for business, but it happens.
Quoted from greatwichjohn:Ron the Space Shuttle was mine from a bunch that did not go for printing with the old colorspan. Omni clear for finish is what is used most of my playfields over 14 year span.
NOW I Remember. John, you are a prince!
I am so impressed with the prep on this one. I thought it was an unfinished nos for most of the time i've had it. Its great to have potential projects around for when I or someone I know needs.
I still prefer omni. I used to use PPG shop master I think it was called, and my dealer stopped carrying it. No one had it in my county. PPG told me that omni is the same material.
Trying to avoid a mistake from two years ago when I worked on a Jacks Open, I didn't let not owning an El Dorado keep me from buying one of Wade's recent repros. Then for other reasons - why not just have Wade send it to Ron? Add to that some things from PBR and an order to Shay....
Not the greatest after shot in this thread to be sure, but when the right candidate comes along for sale - I'm going to have a field day.
I swear this thing is so shiny, my camera focused on the reflection of the machine behind it and not the surface itself.

I totally agree with your angle. I have learned thru the years, its the way to go. If you know you want a very nice title, start putting together the parts that are hard to find, or take a long time to get cleared, or if you find a deal. Back when I used to go to a lot of shows with dayhuff, I would grab any used part that was a good price, and I figured I would use in the future. I traded some work for BG's from shay a couple years back. He makes the best backglasses hands down! I got titles that I really want, but they are games that are so dang hard to find like queen of hearts, minstral man, and knock out. Hope to some day have at least one of those.
BTW here is some stuff I am looking for
I need a nice used or repro flight 2k BG
cpr pf for strikes and spares for a game restoration
I need to borrow or buy a high speed pf to make a dimple template. I will pay for shipping, and what ever you want.
I am looking for pfs to have in stock and for my collection. trade or cash. NOS/Repro/pf's I cleared and you didnt install, and also some used ones. Off hand I want a nice Genie, Amazing spiderman, superman, Hulk, or any wedge head pfs. I think thats the direction I am going next. That eldorado would be a blast since I have been playing the hell out of my eldorado city of gold. (there are 16 drops lined across the top. If you dont drop them all before you loose the ball, they all come back up. I bet I drop them all, in one out of 20 balls).
I do have some games for trade:

I got some work done on the 4th, and I got the NOS pfs TZ and STTNG hand sanded/dremmiled.
Its nerve racking sanding these big money NOS pf. I got thru both without making any extra work for my self. I dont consider sanding thru the black key line around an insert more work because I would have to paint it any way. The next 4 days are all going to be over 85% humidity. The pfs hate it, as well as the clear. In my old age, I despise it myself. climate change. glad I wont be around when miami beach is all gone, and food starts getting scarce. How can I pay 5 bucks a gal in my monster truck that I drive to the office?
I had a funny convo with the girl at the gas station I go to every morning for a big pop. There was a guy filling a beautiful F250, and he put 130 and change in it. I asked her "how does he pay 90 grand for a truck and 130 for gas?"
She replied as if it was common knowledge " He makes a lot more money than you do dum dum"
Since the gas station has a sign on the door that says help wanted 14$ starting pay, I know its just as crazy to her also.
I look forward to my pop runs because often that is the only human interaction I have for the day.
ah life.

There was a guy on the high speed thread who just picked one up with a trashed playfield but came with a spare populated playfield that he was going to fit, might be worth asking if he could send you the trashed one?
On another note my replacement FT CPR playfield arrived damaged, annoying as this is a nice one. Print good and inserts feel flush.
Waiting to here what they can do for me.

I think pinball is just a niche enough hobby to fall under the rule of "The right time to buy something is when it's available." You've essentially nailed my perspective on this though. I've wanted an El Dorado for years. After a good chunk of regret for not having picked up a Jacks Open from Wade, the time to buy an El Dorado from him was 110% "When he's selling them, dummy. Don't think twice." Oh hey. Shay has El Dorado backglasses in stock? Well then, guess when you should buy one? (It's "right now") Worried that maybe by the time you need or want one that Steve won't have those repro coin doors or plastic sets in stock? Well I've got just the thing for you. It's called "Call Steve and order some things."
Of course I'm now a good chunk of money into a table that I don't own, but whatever. First world problems are the best kind to have. And the upside is that when it comes time to locate an El Dorado to put things into - cosmetically I really only have to worry about the cabinet. Flaked backglass? Roached playfield? No worries to me at all.

10 years ago I could find you one in 1-12 months with my connections, maybe, but now... If I see another NOS of that title, I would feel lucky.
Both shay and wado do Great work, and its done in small batches. In wades case 25. Eldorado is such a popular game, and they made so many games....Now it can go too far and you become a hoarder, which is very easy for me to do. Thats why I made the rule for every pf that I own, if someone wants it to install, I have to sell it. Some of the titles kill me that I sold, but if I wouldnt, I would have 50 nos pfs hidden away, (Besides the 65 I have now) not being used, all for my crazy brain. Selling nos rocky, genie, hulk, spiderman, dr dude diamond plate (which I am trying to find now) all pfs I hated to sell, but I am a hoarder/addict. I know that so I have to make rules for my self. I envy people with self control, that can just do a little, or just get a little buzzed, or just have a couple games.

I got a pf delivered this week from germany that either customs opened or they didnt bother to fully wrap it. It was a used box with tape that was cut open before, and when it got here there was a half inch gap between the 2 pieces of cardboard. so I could see the back of the pf no problem. The good thing is it was not damaged. I was worried when I saw it on the porch. No drama thank god.

Was that the Taxi playfield? You got me sweating if it was.
That last picture of crumpled corner looked like a ham and cheese layered sandwich. Even if it got replaced, I would cut those corners off with a miter saw and seal them.
I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, but I received my newly clear coated TAF playfield from kruzman about a month ago.
It’s is absolutely awesome!! The clear is unbelievable.
Ron sent it over to me in the UK via UPS, which actually only took a few days. Also the crate used to ship the playfield is top notch. I think it could withstand a lot of punishment during transit and the playfield would still be perfect.
Thanks again Ron

That is fuckin' PORN. My god..
Quoted from Pinball_Eddie:Was that the Taxi playfield? You got me sweating if it was.
Yes it was the taxi, but no damage at all. The front was wrapped in a sheet of paper, and it took no damage. Mirco suspends the pf in the middle of the box, so if it gets gouged, it still wont touch the pf. It means the box is 20% bigger, but they rarely get damaged in my experience. Though, I dont see many damaged cpr pfs (from travel at least). I feel that both manufactures do their due diligence in packing the the pfs. Enough so that any damage is from bad handling or bad luck.

Don’t work too hard Ron and thanks again my friend.
The last 2 days have been viet nam heat and humidity, so I am catching up on way over due paint work. I apoligize for how far behind I am on it.
So that I dont have brush strokes, I have to double coat, even black! sucks. here is the process on this quick silver. Its one coat and took 40 min for the 2 star roll overs.
And my dollar store glasses which are much stronger than my bifocals

Only 5 inserts didnt need to be painted!!!!! some of them only had a crack line around half of the insert, but I cant leave a little, after painting so many all ready. It would stand out.
2 of the 5 I didnt paint are the outside drain lanes. I still may have to paint them. They are more time consuming because I have to draw the inside and out side lines of the key line (like on the quick silver star rollovers)
lastly here is the indy 500 that I had daane make a lock decal for me, but it is brighter that the original 2, so I have double coated lock on the other 2 inserts. Painting script with a brush is not easy.
So now I believe the paint is done on this title, and I can clear it and sell it.
ITS FOR SALE.
Today I am painting rocky and bullwinkel that will be for sale (restored) as well as I am going to try again to paint these fluorescent rings around the inserts in front of the swamp on a TAF ipb repro. The screens didnt line up so there is white slivers in the hot orange/pink key lines. The problem is I cant get it to look stock. I have done it twice allready and both times it draws attention, and I would rather have it stock and slightly off, that draw attention that its been repainted. so we shall see. Often sanding the work off, and starting fresh another day, really works.

Ron = It looks fabulous! I appreciate your attention to detail, especially in this Hot Humid Sweaty weather. I really liked the last picture with the tiny tapes showing how you get that professional look. Zoomed in with picture software and wide screen monitor, I am seeing details in the artwork that I never noticed before. Thank you for sharing pictures of process and progress.

Pretty sure this one's mine. Sorry for any trouble it's causing you. I didn't even see any of that. Only thing I saw was a red blemish under the side ramp area. Didn't care cause I figured the ramp would cover it up anyway. Goes to show you what the trained eye picks up over the untrained.
There was a CPR repro gold available for less but I was told the IPB was closer to the original as far as coloring went. So I spent more on the IPB...should have grabbed the CPR

The only rocky and bullwinkle I have is a used one I bought of ebay. Thats what I am restoring. These are pics of me doing the black work while I match the white yellow green and red. Lucky for me the green is exactly the same shade as the indy 500. You can see the insert lines in the white and I dont like the way that looks so I am going to paint the flower petals at the very top along with other white

DUH now I get it. you are talking about the TAF. After doing those 3 inserts again yesterday, I am going to sand them off and leave it stock. I cant make them look better than they are. It had a bunch of black paint work both around the inserts with cracks, but also on the ipb you can see the cut and paste lines in the black. I posted a couple pages/months back when I painted them
Here are some of the pics of the IPB TAF. I am so sorry that it got put aside. I did all of the black paint work, and I did a coat of clear, and I didnt like those 3 inserts, so I put it with the paint pf's. I got frusterated twice because I couldnt match the fluorescent color, and This week I am doing all of the paint work, and I realize how far behind I am on this one and I am very sorry. If you look back on page 35 there is the pre paint colors. then this pf shows up again on page 36 or 37 because I realized it was about 35 holes short. the pops were not drilled as well as the post holes, so i did that also. All of the IPB are short these holes, and all of them have the cut and paste lines on the greed inserts. The only thing I cant fix well is the routing around the corner of the fester chair. None of the IPB pfs are routed around both corners.
So today the pf is back in the clear coat section, and I will have it done shortly It has 1/3 of the coats done now and I am going to coat today. I apologize for this one getting put back and put back with the paint work pfs.
I am looking for another used pf to make a dimple pattern for.
I need a Fireball pf to borrow for 2 weeks.
I do no damage to the donor pf. I put a piece of plexi on top and I mark the drill holes than I take it out and drill the holes, so no damage or scratching to your pf.
This is for a customer who got a NOS original pf, and of course its not dimpled. Once I make the pattern I can use it like 8 times before the holes get sloppy, so you will be contributing to the community. I will pay for shipping, and I can give you a credit toward work, or pay you cash, or buy the pf from you, just let me know. its doesnt take me long. less than 2 weeks and you will have it back
Quoted from Snowman:Hello Wade, any possibility that you may produce the Gottlieb "Atlantis" playfield again?
wade told me a couple weeks ago that he may re run that title in the future, but there are a couple before it. I would guess about a year out. Thats my guess.
Here is a used congo that I am making a dimple pattern with. It's for my bud tommy. He bought the NOS congo from me, and I told him to find a used congo so I can make a dimple pattern and dimple it. I used to have one but I sold it years ago. didnt remember to whom or when or any of it.
So tommy gets a used congo and its my old pf. It still has the center ball hole that I rebuilt with JB weald, and sanded really nice. Its so wild when this happens. I wanted to restore this pf so bad, but it had insert art that was damaged on like 4 inserts, and they dont make an insert decal sheet for this game.
Some day I need to buy one of those vinyl cutters that Daane used to make the insert art for my I500 that I am restoring. In fact that would make a lot of previously un-restorable pf's now restorable. I think the cutter is called a cricket. My old friend in detroit have one Lisa Linton. I put her name here incase one day she googles her own name, maybe this will come up. Hi
A really nice customer send me this totan to work on. he said it needed a lot of work. He was so kind he included a project repro pf for me to fix and have. When I unboxed the totan, I just looked at it for a minute and saw the usual cpr stuff. there was a seam in the top laminate that I would have to fix, but other than that I didnt see all of the work that I was going to have to do before the first spray. I apologize for all of the pics, but I just kept finding issues and work, and it was a "gold" so I was suprised a little. First I was bummed how much the print was off around the inserts.
