Hey pinsiders--I'm a newb to repairing EM machines. I had only one for many years--a Gottlieb Pioneer. Now I now own a Williams Aztec.

After fixing a common problem with the switch on the Coin Unit (see this post: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/1976-williams-aztec-player-unitcoin-unit-issue-always-2-players) Some operator had bent it out of the way--I think maybe as part of a hack to make it freeplay.

In my quest to undo Freeplay, I'm on to my next "issue." If it's actually an issue: While I've been troubleshooting, I'm coining up to test. When I actuate the coin switch, the replay knocker is firing. Is this normal? I thought that thing was only supposed to go off for the "extra ball" and/or "free game" features.

Advice and answers to the above credit/knocker issue and the ancillary (and maybe related) issue of undoing the freeplay hack would be appreciated.

I've been reading this thread on freeplay hacks: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/setting-for-free-play

Here are photos of the relevant components:

P.S. To me, it doesn't look like it's using the credit wheel hack.

I like it when the knocker goes off when I coin up, to me its normal and a desirable feature on an EM.

It looks like the knocker should sound everytime the credit unit step up.

Thanks for the confirmation.

ArgosySK is correct, and here is the schematic that confirms it. It is a simple circuit, so maybe it will help de-mystify schematics a bit for you in the future.

When all switches are closed in a path between the left and right “rails” of the schematic, all devices on that path activate. In this case, when the credit unit increments, its EOS (end of stroke) switch closes, activating your knocker coil.

So any increment to your credit unit (score threshold, coin up) will fire the knocker, including if you manually actuate your credit unit step up coil plunger by hand. Try it and see for yourself!

Oh, I've triggered it by hand lots.

Glad to know it's normal. Thanks for showing me on the schematics (both of you)... I'm still a little green on reading them.
