We have a Kiss in our leagues and I've been working with the operator to try and resolve a problem.

Initially the machine refused to acknowledge that a ball had been shot into Gene's head. The ball would sit there until a ball search kicked it out. We opened up the machine and found there was a screw missing from the switch at the back of the head near the VUK. They replaced the screw.

The problem now is that it will only register / award a lock shot. It will not award a mode shot in the head, although the game recognizes that the ball is there because it spits it out and turns on the ball saver for 2 seconds.

We looked and looked and could only find one switch in his head, so I'm totally confused as to why it would award a lock shot, but not award a mode shot.

The code is the most recent.

Any thoughts?

Never mind.

I found another thread where someone explained that there are optos at the entrance to his mouth that handle the mode / instrument targets and the physical switch handles the lock shot.

I've pointed the operator in the right direction.

Just to follow up on this issue. It wasn't an issue with the Optos directly, but with the left lock target. It appears as though the left lock target shares wiring with the Opto somehow. I don't know if it shares a ground, but repairing the wiring to the left lock target fixed the issue with the optos. It was hard to see in the wiring bundle, but it appears as though they share a common wire.

The issue with the machine at leagues was a broken wire that was supposed to be attached to the left lock target. I have read other threads where it's an issue with the optos, but that requires the removal of Gene's head and doesn't look like fun.

Poke around at the lock targets and wiggle the wiring. If you're lucky you have a bad solder joint or a broke wire like we did.

Spyderturbo007 is spot on. How the SPIKE system works is that each connector on each Node board shares a common ground that is chained from target to target. In this case, it's Node 11 Connector 5. This is used to drive the following three:

Left Lock Target
Right Lock Target
Demon Entrance Opto

You will find a common wire (most likely Black) that runs to all three of these targets and back to the Node board. If one of the wires break off the target switch, it'll effectively disable any switches past that point.
