I have a Best of Kiss cd on my jukebox and it gets played a lot. Once a band stops making new albums and stops touring, its hard to stay significant but Kiss has its place in rock history. Not many bands can put 20 great songs on a best of album but Kiss can.

    #52 9 years ago

KISS put out a new album a year and a half ago and are selling out arenas all over the country this summer, even with the $100-200 ticket price. Name 5 other bands that have been around for 40 years that can say that. Seriously. Try to do it.

    #53 9 years ago

Kiss sucks. The music is so simple and annoying.

This is coming from somone that listens to a lot of 60-70s rock

    #54 9 years ago

Agree with the OP, ridiculous choice for any pinball company. These guys have nothing, just be honest and do a Gene Simmons pinball...that's actually LESS ridiculous.

    #55 9 years ago
    Quoted from Khabbi:

Funny, a lot of people I talk to also think pinball hasn't been relevant in 30 years? I wonder why people always go back to the past? hmmm.
    Just a ridiculous post.

Well, you don't do a double whammy on them. Using your logic this will be the most epic failure of all time, irrelevant band for an irrelevant hobby.

The 1979 Bally's KISS machine is what brought me into this hobby. I had never thought twice about owning a pinball, but I wanted the KISS machine to add to my collection of their memorabilia. Once I got the original machine to my house, I quickly discovered a new obsession and bought 4 more machines within a year.

KISS will promote the hell out of a new machine and people who never once thought about pinball will want one. Hopefully they'll get addicted to the hobby like we all have and this crazy little thing will carry on. We should all want every game to be a success, so Stern keeps cranking them out and other companies jump in the manufacturing game.

Garbage band doesn't necessarily equal a garbage pin. ACDC is a prime example of this.

    #59 9 years ago

Kiss may be irrelevant however as odd as it may seem the 79 Bally KISS at Modern Pinball NYC is one of, if not the most, played machines.

Maybe its the nostalgia factor maybe it the simplicity of the rules?

Whatever it is a new KISS machine might fare well amongst a new audience.

    And AC/DC isn't? Every AC/DC song is basically a 3 word phrase.

Do you mean the co-headlining tour of KISS and Def Leppard
Just checked the Dallas date in 3 days and there are plenty of great seats still for sale
I bet we can find plenty of 40 year old bands that can co-headline and not come close to selling out.

    #63 9 years ago

The great thing about "irrelevant bands" is I get to see KISS and Def Leppard live on August 5th at Spac for like $20.

Thats great that you believe it. But none of it is true. Not a word of it. Well technically they did put out an album last year, thats true. But all this they are selling out nationwide and their show is some hot ticket... no.

Look at the upcoming tour for this summer. You claim it is sold out even with $100-200 ticket prices.

    http://www.ticketmaster.com/KISS-tickets/artist/735455#artist_table_focus

Select any venue. You wont have any problem finding large blocks of $40 tickets available.

Second note... Superstar rock bands dont need to add Def Leppard as a co headliner to not sell out such pretigious venues as the San Manuel Indian Bingo Casino.

Ha! I agree with your sentiment if not your taste in music.

I still don't understand why some think their personal opinions reflect the market. If I remember correctly AC/DC, WOZ, and Metallica all got hammered for having terrible themes. All three seem to be solid choices in retrospect.

Bashing Kiss is so easy and so much fun.
I remember as a 10 year old kid lessening to Ozzy, Metallica, Anthrax and making fun of Kiss way back then

Kiss sucks a fat one, so does their fan base. So does stern.

Every single kiss song sucks, gene Simmons REALLY sucks ass.

Don't see why they named themselves kiss, should have been suck, or ear-rape

I have different opinions on those 3 pins.
ACDC - Love the band/theme, love the pin
Metallica - hate the band/theme, love the pin
WOZ - hate the theme, hate the game

You just need to make a fun game for the majority. I could care less about Metallica but it's a great game. I have held off on my opinion on WOZ for awhile and I do not like that game at all. It's just eye candy and thats about it.

Anthrax are HUGE Kiss fans. But yeah, Kiss is very easy to bash. Style over substance. Commercial product not real music. Old guys in makeup. Hell, just Gene alone makes them a big target. None of this has much to do with whether or not there's a market for a Kiss pin though. There was a market for a Kiss Casket. Dimebag Daryl's buried in one.

    #73 9 years ago

Hey stern!!! Toby Keith needs a pinball! So does nickel back! And while you're at it make one for souljah boy and Nikki minaj

Stones, Boss, Roger Waters, Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac.

    Yae that's 5 I did it! Seriously I did!

    #76 9 years ago

My opinions don't reflect the market either. I want a Ramones pin probably more than anything. But have enough common sense to know it wouldn't be a profitable theme.

Kiss has a huge following that isn't afraid to spend money on Kiss stuff. As a theme it makes sense IMO.

It's hard to logically argue against it if your a business like Stern.

    #78 9 years ago

I can at least understand why they chose Kiss though, Kiss is the embodiment of stern, an eye catching wrapper placed over a dull lifeless product thats way past its relevance.

this argument is being used a lot here. but the question isn't "are they making money". the question is "are they relevant".

    The answer is NO.

But that never stopped KiSS from continuing to make money nor is it stopping Stern from releasing a KISS pinball machine.

    #82 9 years ago

Kiss fans buy expensive Kiss merch. End of story....music preference debates won't change that. The old Kiss pinball is still in demand from Kiss fans, and that game blows. A Kiss pin with actual music & video footage? It'll be like Metallica LE - LE's will sell out within a few days.

    #83 9 years ago

Weather they are relevant or not I don't think really matters. Not a big Kiss fan but at least they have the image that can be made into a pin well. Like Iron Maiden (which myself and nobody I know knows much aboot) it's got the style to work.

    #84 9 years ago
    Quoted from Rarehero:

    They do?

As far as I can tell, your average KISStard collects tons of cheap crap. Action figures, lunchboxes, RC vans, posters...but only the most dedicated KISStard actually owns the 1978 pinball machine, which goes for around $2000-$3000 smackers.

Most of these guys haven't pooled enough lunch money over the years to splurge for the $5000-8000 it's gonna cost to buy a new KISS pinball machine.

Relevant to what? We're talking about this because Stern is supposedly going to make a Kiss pin. I'd imagine it's relevant to Stern that they're making money. Relevant to modern music? Outside of their impact on merchandising and stage shows probably not so much. But they were on American Idol last month performing with the guy who won. I'm sure that's relevant to somebody...

And just to be clear I'm not arguing Kiss' musical legacy here. I just think they're a good choice for a pinball machine.

I know a KISS collector that has this game and it is nothing but a floor lamp.
I told him I could shop it and make it work but he said it is a collectable and it will be worth more if it doesn't get played.
He paid 4K for it and it is the crowning jewel of his collection.

    #92 9 years ago

Bottom line...as far as Stern is concerned...is will it sell?

The KISS merchandising juggernaut of the past 40+ years seems to suggest it will.

Not every member of the KISS Army is a member of pinside, so we can take our little informal polls and get into arguments back and forth on the merits of the band, but at the end of the day, someone who probably has done a little bit of research seems to think it'll sell (and is worth the upfront costs associated with acquiring the license).

    #93 9 years ago
    Quoted from Matt_Rasmussen:

And I argue that trying to draw in a younger crowd by putting out a Kiss pin is the nail the the coffin.

Remember Stern makes multiple titles. Not every title has to "draw in a younger crowd". There are already plenty of younger crowd Stern machines available new and used. Avengers, X-Men, Transformers, Shrek, Spider-Man, etc. If/when Kiss goes into production, there will probably also be a "family" title on the line as well. If they do make a Kiss machine, it's to sell it to Kiss fans....just like Metallica sold to Metallica fans. If the game is good, it'll sell to non-fans on its own merits....and, as AC/DC and Metallica have proven - "music experts and snobs" have no bearing on whether these games appeal to people or not. No one cared that Bon Scott wasn't featured on AC/DC. No one cared that Cliff wasn't featured on Met. No one will care which version of Kiss is featured in Kiss. Kiss fans will be interested & buy it. Plenty of people actually like Kiss' music.

The best "younger crowd" theme would be Adventure Time ...iron is still hot & teens/adults love it too! Big animated movies that appeal to kids/adults would be good, too - Despicable Me, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, something by Pixar (Toy Story, Incredibles, etc)

    #94 9 years ago
    Quoted from Matt_Rasmussen:

If Avengers and X-Men didn't pull in the younger crowd 4 old dudes in makeup sure as hell won't. I don't think that's the audience they're targeting here.

Adventure Time would be so f***ing awesome. Never gonna happen, but it would be so good. I honestly wouldn't trust Stern to do it justice though, would need to be a labor of love kind of project like Big Lebowski, done by fans who will take the time to get it right.

They'd be able to do it just fine....the show and art is strong enough to kinda make the game for them. The actors from the show would totally do custom voices. The show's creator loves video games and pinball...he'd be all over it.

Sheesh!...i was reading here about $40 tickets and decided maybe I'll go see them. This is what I found...

    Section SECTION 101
    US $247.50 - US $1,250.00

Click this section to see them.

I did the same thing, thinking I'd finally see them for the nostalgia of it.

The kid in me who bought Alive II as an 8 year old said, "Hell, YEAH!"

Then after seeing ticket prices to sit in the back row at Alpine Valley...

The adult in me said, "Hell, NO!"

Guess I could sell a pin to pay the $2500 for my wife and I to buy "meet and greet" tickets...NOT!
