    Quoted from Haymaker:

What are we calling this scandal?
    Plungegate?
The plunge heard around the world?
    Elwin's last stand?

I really think it’s up to the OP- who we haven’t heard from since the original post - to name this scandal.

After all, he’s met Keith Elwin.

    #352 1 year ago

Super skill shot for his next STERN game. Plunge and walk away and access the wizard mode.

    #353 1 year ago

Theres a bit of congo in the actions.... plunge plunge plunge for skill shots over and over. Maiden, GZ have some Congo influence... by not IFPA!?

    Keith Elwin's favorite song...

He "WALK"ed away from the game is the joke here I believe

    #357 1 year ago

    Song is called Walk

    #358 1 year ago

    I watched the tournament.

    He conceded the game.

It was a long brutal contest, and he conceded. Nothing really to see here.

So, WTF is this thread about?

Seeing 17mil on a F-14 and 200k on a Cap'n Fantastic was great to see!

    Quoted from pinballinreno:

Conceding a world championship match. No one had ever seen it before. Especially interesting since the GOAT was the one that did it.

    Quoted from chuckwurt:

Yep, it was quite the moment. Something to talk about for sure.

Also, having watched the match, I am 100 percent confident that even if Keith gave it his all on that Ball 3, he would not have come back. Escher had a monster ball 3 to put up the score that he did, and Keith would have had to put up an even bigger ball with less tools to work with. Maybe on a game that Keith knows and likes well, but not on DI.

Besides, I think the Lefkoff-Elwin match was really decided on Funhouse 2 games earlier. Keith was on his way to beating Escher on his own pick, but lost his ball 3 on a rough mirror-kickout. If he'd managed to keep the ball alive, then he was one shot away from a really big MB and likely surpassing Escher to put himself ahead in the match.

I think that was the real key-moment of their contest.

    #361 1 year ago

I’m 100 percent confident he would’ve caught Escher. Too bad we will never find out!

The only thing that is really comparable would be the 1919 Black Sox scandal. For his millions of fans who tuned in to the stream, I can only imagine the emotions they are grappling with. Say it ain’t so Keith. Say it ain’t so.

Can’t believe this thread keeps going and going. A Pinside top 10 ridiculous discussion.

    No surprise here

Know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em...

    #365 1 year ago

I started watching the VoD because of this thread!

I loved the action on Fathom and Black Rose, and I had NEVER heard of Andromeda?! What a sweet game! Instant wishlist! I’d have to review the scores to be sure but that felt like Escher and Elwin’s closest game.

(Upon reflection I bet Argosy was their closest)

I got to the moment in question, and as pointed out earlier in the thread, Elwin walks over from where he’s standing in a group with Escher, plunges, and walks right back over to the group. I think anyone clutching their pearls about sportsmanship could do themselves a big favor and relax.

The only people who know what was really going on in that moment are the people who were right there. I feel like the mask requirement added to the confusion for viewers. Without a mask maybe it was a “what an amazing set of matches, hats off, kid” kind of expression on his face. Or maybe it was “fml I’ve got absolutely nothing left.” We’ll never know, with the mask all we can see is a pair of staring eyes and an unceremonious end to the game.

I think the commentators added to the controversy by unanimously downvoting the move in the moment. It seemed like an overreaction, and amid hours and hours of great commentary I found it to be a glaring swing and a miss.

Looking forward to seeing the rest!

Or in this particular case, know when to walk away.

Well, that’s the beauty of it. Not knowing allows pinside to speculate. For instance, word on the street is that there was talk of possibly Russian collusion.

Working on play list for Keith.

Slow news day in the world of pinball. Someone needs to release something soon, otherwise you'll start posting pictures of your cats....oh, done that already huh?

How about this... Pinball celebrates it's 75th anniversary this year. 1947's Humpty Dumpty started it all with it's fancy controllable flippers. Hope I make it to Pinball's centennial celebrations in 2047 (I'll be 77).

    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

You are tired and want to go home? You’ve just had enough?
I’ve conceded a game in a tournament before. I didn’t know I was disrespecting the sport.

"Sport" . . . there's that word again used in the context of pinball.

On the topic at hand, nothing wrong with conceding a game/match/etc. Happens all the time in a variety of "sports" and other competitions.

    Quoted from DK:

Is any of this footage on YouTube/Twitch for us to rewatch?

Sadly, it’s gone now. Over several days I made it through the semifinals, and was hoping to watch some of the finals this morning. Does anyone know if it’s going up somewhere else?

Don't know if the full streams are anywhere, but there are still a ton of clips from the event on the Asylum page

“Sport” is colloquialism around here. I really wouldn’t get hung up on it.

Like, when boxers and pundits call it the “fight game” they don’t mean to infer it comes in a cardboard box and is sold by Parker brothers.

It's like calling golfers and bowlers athletes. It makes them feel good, but it's not really accurate.

IDK.. when you have trained yourself, body and mind to be consistently better than thousands, or tens of thousands of other people who would strive for the ability you have, I'd define you as an athlete of some sort...

Calling pinball a sport is like saying everyone gets a trophy for participation.

    Uhhhh......huh

IMHO for something to be classed as a sport you must have to change your footwear to play it properly. So that's darts, snooker, bridge, all out of the equation.

    #380 1 year ago

So then since cargo shorts and New Balance sneakers are mandatory attire for competitive pinball, case closed, it's a sport.

Boxing is called the "sweet science". But to your point, you never see them brawl in lab coats.

    #382 1 year ago

I can see the ops concerns. It is also understandable what the op is trying to say about all the people that the conceding person beat prior. In some ways I would consider this possibly poor etiquette in competition; but absolutely not a rules issue. To each their own choices if they earned the spot in the finals it really is nobodies choice but theirs.
It should be able to be brought up with a flame suit and thumbs downs. OP did not seem rude but rather concerned with these type of actions in general!

Remember boys and girls we are fortunate to ever play or own pinball games at home.

    Have fun play pinball!

    #383 1 year ago

Could the "sport" objectors contain their ire if we call pinball an eSport? It seems apt because pinball, like video games, is not traditionally athletic in the way most sports are considered to be, but success in competition at top levels requires the kind of reflexes, split second decision making, and in-depth knowledge that's far, far beyond the reach of the average enthusiast, no matter how much time we spend in our respective basements.

    #384 1 year ago
    Quoted from trecemaneras:

Thanks for the compliment on the commentary over that epic marathon of a match.

I stand by what I recall saying in that moment and don't deem it either an overreaction nor adding to any controversy:
    1) Shock.
    2) It was KME's choice and right to do as he pleased.
    3) I strongly disagreed with the decision -- still do. Primarily, as a competitor, I will always try to come back when I'm facing elimination. Secondarily, as someone who enjoys the competition itself, it deprived the match/event from seeing a possible awesome comeback.

    #385 1 year ago

100% - it was unmistakable in all of your voices!

    Quoted from Snailman:

Thanks for the compliment on the commentary over that epic marathon of a match.

...Here I am, guilty of lobbing the same kind of easy criticism when I wasn't there that I was trying to point out in others in this thread /facepalm

You all did such a great job, I sincerely appreciate your efforts - it was a pleasure watching from the final 8 through the semifinals, and I would never have watched for so many hours without the expert commentary. I'm only disappointed I didn't manage to get the finals watched before the VoD went down. I'll have to plan better next year!

Lots of streamers seem to post their VoDs on youtube, but I don't have experience with any of that.

I thought I would come back to this thread I created about a month ago after seeing all chatter and opinions it has received. As many of you have stated by no means was the OP I created aimed at being rude or negative towards Keith, someone who I've looked up to as one of the best players in the world since I started playing. The OP was just a simple observation of what happened that raised a lot of eyebrows and I wanted to see everyones take on it. And wow I'm so happy that this thread has brang so much positive feedback to pinball streams in general, even making people go watch it for themselves who don't normally watch pinball streams. I'm glad to see that this thread got a lot of people talking about the event in general from talking about their own experiences in tournaments to posting pictures of themselves at the event itself! We all know what's done is done, no right or wrong and whatever was the reason behind Keiths move does not really matter, but it's a great conversation starter into pinball tournaments which this thread has done and beyond! Thanks for all the comments I've enjoyed them all.

    Quoted from SirMachismo:

INT. ARMY RECURITER’S OFFICE – (DAY)
SFC Cunningham: Shit, I know you! You’re Merrell Hess I was there when you refused to time out Chopper Rescue and reached Earthquake in one ball! You GC’ed Baywatch, and put in your initials…Are you still the Grand Champion?
Merrell: It still says Grand Champion MFH.
SFC Cunningham: You won two tournaments, didn’t you?
    Merrell: Five.
SFC Cunningham: Why aren’t you at IFPA Worlds making stacks of cash and getting your toes licked by beautiful women?
Lionel: Because, he has another record most people don’t know about…He drains SDTM.
    Merrell: Hello, Lionel
Lionel: Merrell here is a Class-A screw up…It didn’t matter if he should trap up, dead bounce or time out a mode. He would just flip those flippers as much as he could…Looked like he was playing Konami’s Track & Field.
SFC Cunningham: You really never timed out a mode?
Merrell: It felt wrong not to Flip.
    END SCENE
Plunge and walk away or flip to the very end like Merrell Hess? It’s Keith’s ball to play, but I love a comeback story or at least a hero going down with his guns drawn (or flipping in this case). [quoted image]

I couldn't let this go because I thought this was a really funny post, especially since I have a BW and get the references.

Awhile ago I remember watching a gameplay video, may have been Chuck, and the streamer trapped the Helicopter Rescue to time out the mode. I'm like MH here, no way I'm trapping to skip a mode. That's when I start hitting the ramps.

Such a shocking post, it's still hard to read. Utter disbelief that something like this could really happen.

If it makes you feel any better, he lost the good ol' fashioned way yesterday at the NYCPC finals. Maybe he just likes playing Beatles more than Dialed In.

He’s my hero for picking Beatles. Best finals-deciding game pick in a very long time. Probably since he picked alien star in final 4 back in 2019 Nycpc.

    Great streaming material.
