Without the Karma points, who here feels like it is inevitable that they will have a meteor fall on them or some other rare tragic accident?

Is this what John Lennon was singing about? Here is some Instant Karma for everyone:

    Quoted from robin:

I have been planning to get rid of karma points for a long time, wanting to replace it with something better, something more relevant, something that is not just about rewarding making many posts but about rewarding good posts. Post that are appreciated (depending on the sub-forum, topic, upvotes etc) or that add value to Pinside.

Makes sense, and that's what so many other websites have. Why were karma points awarded for mere posting in the first place, regardless of quality?

Definitely was an effective incentive for some users. I did like a few features of the karma; including the new titles. I guess I am just that vain. I think getting people to rate games is important, but linking it with karma is a catch 22.

Back when I joined the site, the forums weren't very active at all. Due to this, I suspect the original intent of giving karma points for posting was to offer an incentive to get people to post in order to generate content in the forums. Nowadays there is no longer any need for such an incentive, hence Robin is looking at retooling it.

Those days are hard to believe now. I remember when the forum was just a list of topics, and the first page would have a good 4 months of topics that had been posted in recently. Maybe 5 posts a day?

    Quoted from pezpunk:

I hope a way can be found to weight posts that are actually helpful and/or informative more than posts that are just funny jpegs/cheap shots/snark, the latter of which tend to get a lot more thumbs up, but add much less value to the forum.

Yes this ^^^^^^^^ . Stupid posts get a lot of thumbs up (usually by the same people all the time) and generally add no value to pinside.

    Quoted from SealClubber:

But even that has been abused as friends automatically upvote their buddies posts and trolls/stalkers auto down vote their "enemies."

Yes this too ^^^^^^^^ . I would give this post a million thumbs up if I could because it is sooooooo true!

IMO, Karma (or an equivalent system) should probably be reserved for tech help and general technical information. Everything else is just entertainment, often times only for entertaining a select group depending on the topic.
Pinside is now big enough that there is no need to give any incentives for posting beyond helping others.

    #62 4 years ago

    Yeah, entertainment is way over-rated.

    Quoted from o-din:

There's already sufficient natural social forces to reward posting glib one-liners (as you well know), and besides I don't feel like Pinside has enough of a shortage of them to warrant an incentive system.

How about the site emphasizes more on the user rating somehow. A lot of users may not even know it exists. That way we can have a little assistance deciding if a user is fair to deal with on a pinball transaction. Promote that feature more and get people to use it. Most the users I've seen on here with machines for sale/trade have no ratings. It would be nice to be able to see a rating and even get in touch with other users who have had past encounters with a seller/buyer and ask how their experience was.

I'd like to see users earn proficiency badges too. Tech, art, mod, rules, restoration, sound specialists etc. Points for contributions to those topics along the way and collect badges as they reach a certain trigger. Easy then to see if a poster might have something valuable to say on a topic, and would also clearly indicate a history of contribution.

The pinball market has been flourishing my friend. It's on a major comeback as you already know. More posts=more pinballers. I think it's a good thing.

There should also be badges for most likely to troll, posting the most cheesecake photos, and the lengths of our penises.

I'm more of a lurker. I don't feel the need to jump in every thread just to tell you what *I* think. ...except for now, but I digress. I do give thumbs up/down... if a new system does go in I hope some consideration is given to that activity as well.

x2 .. crazy high post counts only tell 1/2 the story regarding participation (how many times have you seen a tech problem solved or question answered in the 2nd or 3rd post only to see 10-15 additional post with the same answer )
I don't care either way my posts will be what they are ... sometimes helpful (or to back up another post ) ... sometimes a smartass remark because I just can't resist anymore.

Frankly I thought too many people starting taking their karma ratings seriously but I guess that is what social media is all about .. the illusion that you are more important than you really are

I believe being able to use the letters in your username to spell part or all of the word "PINBALL" should weigh very heavily as an increasing positive multiplier in the new karma solution
At least like 50X to 250X more.
That would probably be the most fair thing to do for all.

I got nothing. Any points for being the cause of most pinball problems being sold on CL? "It's probably just a blownfuse".

Thanks for the news. It's appreciated.

I don't what type of answer or quote this is, but it's quite odd.

It's a line from the Culture Club song "Karma Chameleon" I believe....early 80's Boy George?

    Bring back points.

I used to be a "Pinball Master" or something like that based upon points. I wanna be a master again dammit!

    #81 4 years ago

I'm happy to be a "member".

    #82 4 years ago
    Quoted from tamoore:

Back when there used to be leader-boards on the left side for both total posts and liked posts, I thought a better implementation would be a leader board which showed a ratio between number of posts and number of likes in a given period.
This would "reward" quality posts over quantity. If you had 300 likes in 12 posts, you'd be higher on the ranking than someone who had 300 likes in 200 posts.

Only problem is that likes do not dictate a "quality" post necessarily. Once you get past 5, people practically automatically up and down vote stuff, because then they know it is okay to do since their opinion matches. Mob mentality.

I'm kinda liking the site right now, sans karma points and leader boards.

    you were a master debater.

    #84 4 years ago

Well, as a relative newbie and inconsequential member, I really did like the Karma points. It gave me some kind of basis to understand who was commenting on a particular post. Even taking into consideration that any score or rating is not perfectly accurate and can be abused, it at least gave me a starting point to work from. I hope that Pinside will add the Karma points back to live posts, or add another metric for feedback. It makes it feel more personal. Now it's just random folks saying random things and it feels like a bunch of strangers. Most folks are decent and we all see the trolls and haters, but it was nice to be able to give a thumbs up to someone that helps you with advice or suggestions..... COSMOS...
