Never been to RGP. I don't like that ugly style of layout.

Just curious as your post makes no sense to me. Maybe you missed typed or something, but if you never been to RGP how would you know it has an ugly layout? Just saying......

It is possible he has a bud/friend that has visited rgp. Then this bud/friend explained the appearance and layout to him. Maybe even took a screen cap of it and printed for review. It was at that moment the poster decided that kind of forum layout was not appealing

I want to stay neutral here though...pretend I did not post this message lol...

    #54 11 years ago

There was a response from Gerry over there also. He really has it in for cg . Pretty harsh words . I hope he drops it.

Don't want to see that over here, just awful.

edit: "He keeps getting RETIRED by Robin, and then he's back on in a day or
2...TOOOOOO FUNNY !" - gerry. really? this guy sounds like pure vitriol.

Fair point. I've never posted or really looked around at RGP...and I had neevr heard of it till I was on pinside. Anyway, someone posts a link and says "look at this RGP thread," I click it and it says I need to be a member to look at it. I can tell from there the layout of the board I hate the way those sites are. I have been able to look at a couple links over the last year.

EDIT: See like the link above I can see the site...but usually it tells me I need to log in. Not that I've ever really needed/wanted to.

    Quoted from TheLaw:

Huh. RGP isn't a "forum" and it has no layout. It's a usenet group. It can be viewed by any one of a zillion (plus or minus) newsgroup readers and interfaces, like google groups, rgparchive-removed.com, etc. You can tailor the appearance to your liking by choice of reader, and customize/control a ton of things (filters, threading, etc.) FAR more than on Pinside or a regular forum.

Back on topic, to the OP: You'll be surprised at what you may come up with once you get more involved with tweaking and repairing your games. There are lots of helpful tidbits that come from everyone at any time. Sometimes even bringing up old info in response to a query can be helpful!

    #57 11 years ago

People confuse RGP and the asses that abuse it. RGP is a great place, and the oldest pinball forum with unlimited amounts of information. It is tarnished because it cannot be regulated, and in the end, the asses that can’t refrain from being banned everywhere else, eventually just post in RGP, and more or less add nothing, and just crap all over useful threads, for no apparent reason.

Pinside will eventually take over RGP. People have been moving constantly from RGP to primarily posting here. Clay is involved here now, and so other some other well known people in the pinball world. I would like to see Bory and kbliznick come over and start assisting with tech help at sometime.

Robin has done well being the bouncer at the door, not allowing that drunken moron into the bar at 2am

    #59 11 years ago

I love pinside an love helping fellow pinheads out. Glad you find it enjoyable like most of us do! Robin has done a fantastic job in developing a platform for us to converse and also inventory/sell/trade/etc. All around one of the best platform specific sites on the Internet. Hands down!

The quality of people on this site is amazing. We all have differing opinions but beside that generally everyone respects those opinions (although they will fight for theirs tooth and nail)

I am going to donate a decent amount to pinside now because I understand what goes into development and otherwise.

    #60 11 years ago

Yeah, uhm.. that is kind of lame Bill.

I used to love reading RGP way back before the name Pinside was even thought up. There's tons and tons of valuable info on there and it's fun reading back to the posts about the then new BLY/WMS releases. In a similar fashion to people now discussing new Stern releases. I have a lot of respect for the platform from back in the days when I started in this hobby and learned how to use a newsreader (Free Agent I think mine was called). Come to think of it, that was about the same time I discovered the binaries, mp3 etc. Great times!

Anyway, I don't think anyone is forcing people to pick between the two. They're both free resources so why would you have to pick? (or as Elvira puts it: "Why not both!")

    #61 11 years ago

I'm a pinsider and happy to be one.
I have a lot of inerests and hobbies...but Pinside is the first thing i read in the morning and the last i read at night. Love the knowledge and the varying opinions...

You don't, if you like trolls and attack dogs and a crappy interface go to RGP.
If you use RGPArchive this is what is written at the top.

"I have added two more members to the list of registered users of the >SITE< so they can be blocked (put on ignore list)."

Call it a site and there will be an attack dog on you telling you that you are basically a moron, it is not a site and get a newsreader.
Crack a joke and a resident attack dog will tell you to FOAD.
I guess the new sport over there is to have the trolls sign up here and laugh about how they can bring the trolls over to Pinside.
Personally I am done with RGP, it has degenerated into a troll haven and the fanboys who love them.

    PLONK.

    My views.

You pretty much summed it up right there. I do go to RGP and poke around from time to time but I have yet to make a post. There is some good info there and probably some good people but the trolls are definitely abundant.

BTW: tracelifter, I do REALLY enjoy your posts when you get in deep with some d-bag! I find it funny too that lots of time you can keep scrolling down and find LTG trying to make the peace. Thanx for the laughs guys!

A lot of people have worked hard to promote and support pinball. And I hate to see a couple get into it and destroy a lot of the good that has been done.

Other hobbies and newsgroups have suffered severely because of flame fests. I don't think anyone really wants to see that happen to pinball.

I totally agree and really try hard to just "help" when I can. I will admit there are sometimes I have gotten a little out of hand but at least 9 times out of 10 the other person deserved it. I don't like others being picked on when they are looking for help and direction. THIS IS PINBALL for goodness sakes.

    #72 11 years ago

Big thanks and appreciation to people on this forum, really grateful for all the help and cool stuff. cheers from Australia!

    #73 11 years ago

This site has been so benificial for many beginners and experienced pin players alike. A forum is meant to be informative and constructive. paul_8788 welcome to the forums and thank you for the kind words to all on here who contribute. I'm a firm beleiver in the forum concept. I'm on multiple contributing at some point in the week.

The outreach especially on Pinside has been tremendous in my case. Many of us beginners are flying by the seat of our pants workign with the tools we got in terms of repair, shopping for new machines, selling etc. Its a comforting thought that just because not all of us are local there is a way to join a large community and share ideas positively, not strike them down because one thinks it has no merrit.

    #74 11 years ago

Just like to add my endorsement to paul_8788's original post speaking as another newbie. I too have had a lot of help from the more experienced Pinsiders, thanks to all those who show patience and understanding to us newbies, we all have to start somewhere.

Yes, it was quite evident you are a fan judging by your posts on RGP. Maybe the two of you should get a room Just hope you don't run across coasterguy on the way.

Was the guy a D-Bag occasionally? sure..

But he did have some funny moments...

    Whatever...

I dont really care who i run across..

I will back from no one, or anything...

never have and never will, so i really dont understand what your point is...?

    Not surprised

J/K....didn't really have a point....just giving you a hard time for your "I love you man" comment and the bit of harshness directed by you towards Coasterguy, who's generally well liked here on Pinside. No worries.

    Conjunction, junction...what's your function?

    #80 11 years ago

Can we stop mentioning that retired asshat? I feel like every time he's mentioned in a post, either positive or negative, he smiles and pats himself on the back. This site is great and full of extremely knowledgable and supportive people. Let's focus on that!

    #81 11 years ago

I think this site that Robin has set up is nothing short of fantastic.

The moderation is even-handed, light, and restrained, and ultimately promotes good discussion. I think it's advanced pinball.

RGP Archive is a site. RGP is not a site. It's understandable that people get confused.

    Quoted from tracelifter:

Crack a joke and a resident attack dog will tell you to FOAD.

You can use killfile (RGP) or ignore (RGPArchive) if the poster bothers you. There's no such feature on Pinside, so you're at the mercy of the Moderator. This is not a slam against Robin or Pinside, just an observation.

I prefer the RGP Archive layout, however I prefer Pinside for the Marketplace and Collection features. To each his own. Just understand that when you generalize about RGP users, you're slandering a lot of good people.

I will also ride in Paul_8788's boat. Pinside is the only forum I've ever posted in for technical help of any sort, knowing I'm not going to get laughed out of the place. It's tough being a noob sometimes with all the frowning upon in some of the forums, but pinside has always made my stay a pleasant one. Thank you to all.

OT: I'm heading out to Calgary in a couple of weeks to play the folk fest there. Any good places to play?

Unfortunately, not that I am aware of. About the only place I have seen pins in the wild in Calgary is in a couple of mini-arcades at the airport, and one or two in the larger movie theatres. Probably not worth the time walking through the airport looking though, last time I was there there were only a few pins, and they weren't in that great of shape.

    #86 11 years ago

Ahh too bad. Well at least I'm flying there so I'll get to play a bit at the airport.

...I find the noob/Pinside bashing on RGP very interesting (if not childish), since even the so called "experienced veterans" admit that the hobby needs noobs to survive and evolve. Soooo, we need noobs to evolve the hobby, but we will make fun of them when their level of knowledge resembles that of a....noob? Makes no sense. But then, this backwards logic comes from those members that would likely get kicked off a moderated forum.

    #88 11 years ago

    IMO:

Pinside vs. RGP threads = waste of time

There will always be room for both/people who prefer one or the other/people who use both.

My analogy is: Pinside is the arcade lobby, RGP is the pinball CB radio.

    #89 11 years ago

I read both daily. There is a lot of great information to be had. If I post anything I would rather do it here though in a rather troll free environment. When Somone posts a sincere question and trolls pounce on them it makes you think twice about jumping in. I'm pretty much a noob also, having bought my first machine 5 years ago. Great site.

    #90 11 years ago

Noob bashing is pretentious and a waste of time.

It must be amazing to have been blessed with pinball knowledge after having passed through the birth canal

    #91 11 years ago
    Quoted from Gerry:

and he isnt stupid either...he has shown a bunch of knowledge too...

That is debatable and just because you have some pin knowledge doesn't give you a pass to be an a$$hole, there are some that have forgotten more about pinball than he will ever know and they post over here.

I would rather see Clay posting than the knowledgeable trolls that ran him off RGP.
I can fix any game with his guides I have downloaded into my laptop without ever looking at Pinside or RGP.

Yup, I love reading RGP, there's a great amount of knowledge there... But there's something about pinside that makes me feel at home. And for that Pinside, thank you.

I've been flying into Calgary for the past three months....There are a couple of pins in the gate area but never having any canadian money, I've never bothered to play. As for the city, not much around...Good eating on McCloud, but I haven't found any pins. Downtown was dead.

Absolutely. I was subscribed to RGP long before Pinside and the vast majority of people that have come and gone (and stayed!) from RGP are wonderful folks. It is really an incredibly small but vocal minority that make some cringe, some laugh and some ignore. I'm thrilled to see so many of my RGP buds find their way to Pinside and there's room for both venues.

New collectors who ask for TECH help on RGP are never slammed, and dredging up an RGP thread like that is the Pinside equivalent of trolling. Did you not notice that most of the people posting were pro-Pinside? I mostly saw "both RGP and Pinside are good" posts.

Back on topic: thanks to people here who post about pinball.

    #99 11 years ago

As someone new to Pinside but been around RGP for a very long time (long enough to have had many battle scars, as Cliffy knows), it bumms me out that all the negativity here makes me feel not welcome. RGP will always be my first home. I already know how to deal with the very few trolls there, they are nothing to me, I can do my own moderating. I dropped in to see what Pinside was all about and saw a bunch of people needing help, that's why I stayed. So ... I'm on the fence, posting to both now.

    I feel the same way....

But i have tended to voice my opinion about this a bit louder, and feel i have gotten crapped on because of it....

maybe i got started off on the wrong foot, but i never meant any harm to start off with...Seems like some of you here are overly guarded about this forum.....trust me Pinside will be fine...

I am what i am, and maybe that is a bit much for a couple of guys on this site, but i like to help with advice, and try to give good input...

And one thing for sure is i will not change myself for anyone or and group of people...

I have made a ton of freinds in this hobby from the internet and at the shows i attend...and i enjoy seeing them and spending time with them as much as possible....

those that know me know what i am about...

there are some refreshing things in this forum, but just as equaly, there are some things tht are a bit stomach turning at times....

not everyone in here should be kissing each others ass to agree....

If you put a 100 guys in a locked room to talk about a topic that everyone doesnt always share the same opinion on, ( and pinball would surely qualify for that... LOL )..then your gonna have some type of butting head discussions from time to time....

I just feel that is normal and natural.....and as Pinside grows its gonna happen more frequently..thats just a fact....

That dosent mean these guys are trolls or trouble makers.....its just normal behavior...

ICEmann and i battled it out a bit in another thread, and in the end i said we would just have to agree to disagree, and he was good with that as well....

Coasterguy jumped on my s--- a bit, and i guess included a few others in a general statement, and i was a bit of a d--- to him because of that...and i probably Shouldnt have been that bent outta shape....in hindsight i probably would not have said a couple of the things i did... but when your riled up, dumb s--- happens..not an excuse, but a fact...

But at least now i think he sees my point, and or opinion...whether he agrees with it or not is yet to be seen....

I think everyone here for the most part wants to get along...AND NO .....RGP'ers arent here to piss in your corn flakes....

We are here cause we all like the same things.... pinball
