Been looking for a while now and finally found this one. Figured I'd share to give someone else some hope if they are looking too.

Initial Assessment

The Good:
Cab fade isn't horrible
No fish insert wear

The Bad:
-Fish inserts are raised a bit, but not chipped. Wondering best way to protect or is there a fix?
-DMD has multiple lines out. Outgassed or connection problem I'm thinking?
-Won't launch ball into shooter lane. Kicker mech that puts ball into shooter lane is hung up
-Cab and Head Carriage bolts rusted
-Speaker panel cover isn't attached. Not sure how its supposed to?

Is there a question here or is this just show and tell?

I have a few, they are up top. I'm not sure how the speaker panel overlay attaches...glue?, protect or fix raised fish inserts?, DMD shot?

Congrats Looks great!

DMD is shot. Replace it. It's a $200 part. Or you can spring for a color DMD for $400 - Fish Tales is one of the best games for this mod in my opinion. Beyond making sure your playfield is clean and pinballs new and fresh there's not much you can do to protect the inserts but they'll be fine in home use. Speaker overlay I have no idea.

Great grab. That's a solid pin at a great price. Let me know when you get sick of it.

Thanks Levi. I just swapped the fully workin DMD out of road show. Same result with it. Any pointers or direction to go next? Im a noob with DMDs

Also the speaker panel look like it just goes behind the translite bottom channel. There is some nubs maybe they were glued at one point.

The speaker panel is held on with common adhesive (gel in a tube I'd imagine). If I were to put it back on, I would use 3M emblem adhesive available at PepBoys, AutoZone, Advanced Auto Parts, etc. Less is definitely more if you us the 3M adhesive. You can get it for lesss than $5 at Wally World:

The post below demonstrates me using it to re-adhere a JM speaker grille cover on. It worked 100% with zero issues.

Swapped dmd and didn't fix it?

I'd suspect the ribbon cable. Try swapping that too.

If that isn't the issue, suspect the dmd controller board itself - again you could swap to see if that's the problem.

To protect the inserts you can buy one of the playfield protectors that best of pinball sell. There will be no further damage to your inserts if you put a playfield protector down. They are amazing and I have them on most of my games.

As far as the speaker panel, if it is anything like the speaker panel on Dr. Who, it is glued on. Hope this helps you.

Just clean wax and add mylar or cling vinyl over raised inserts. It cld also b the dmd board causing the issues ...run the dmd test in the menu options

Yep, got one on my new TAF - absolutely awesome. Never worrying about PF damage ever again.

#22 7 years ago

I'd say you did pretty well. I'm local so if you decide to get rid of it for whatever reason, I'll take it off your hands.

To fix the raised inserts take a hair dryer and hit the back of the insert with hot hair to soften the epoxy. Take a a huge C Clamp with two wooden blocks (one on top the other at the bottom) and squeeze the insert back into place. Hit the back of the insert with new epoxy glue. Mylar over if need be and enjoy your game. If you can't get a C clamp in there, rubber mallet hammer with a soft block and something to apply pressure in the back of the playfield. (option 1 is always better than 2)
